Hofner Club bass used by Jack Jones' bassit @ Glasto
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
Thanks. My edit and your post crossed in the ether. BTW: Is that six string Warwick being used by Toots and the Maytals a part fretless bass solely due to wear? -
I've been looking at the basses used @ Glasto. So far, apart from the modified Lakland Bob Glaub as per another thread, the choice seems rather conservative. Mostly Fenders, both PB and JB. A Musicman I presume in the Slash bit. Oh, just as I writ this Toots and the Maytals have something different. Warwick 6 string? Anyhow, I digress. I was surprised to see Jack Jones' bassist using what I think to be a Hofner Club. As they go for £450 or so on t'internet, it's a mid-priced bass, being used at a major concert. Should I be surprised? Is it a bass that punches above its weight? Edit: Ooops! Higher price bracket models exist: http://www.imuso.co.uk/Bass-Guitars/7883-/...e=googleproduct (I was hoping to delete the post, but no delete button).

Bass being played in Jackson Browne concert
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
Did it look like the blue one in this link? regenerate
No, not like that at all. If my memory serves. Much more like the Lakland Bob Glaub but with (as stated above) a different pickup. Thanks for the answers. -
If anyone has Glasto playing on BBC3 now, what bass is that being played in Jackson Browne's band. It looks a fender precision shape with a bigger, presumably humbucker, pickup, and a bridge I don't recognise. A customised jobbie?

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Annoying Twit replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
CMI bass. CMI in this case standing for Cleartone Musical Instruments, the USA based CMI not the UK (?) one. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CMI-Bass-Very-rare-a...=item1c139f7336 Claims to be Fujigen. I'm not even going to hazard a guess if that's correct for this instrument or not Edit: Oh, it needs a setup but the "trust" rod is broken. How do you do a setup on an instrument with a broken truss rod? -
Antoria, looks ok Star Bass
I've just been watching this one count down to 0s with an itchy trigger finger in a semi-hypnotised state. No bids @starting bid of £120 + £20 p&p. It seems a bargain for a Fujigen made instrument. Is it not Fujigen made? Or do the mods make it unattractive to bidders? -
I've got my date for my Grade 4 exam!
Annoying Twit replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
On first reading the title, I interpreted "date" as in "I've got my date for the prom"! Good luck for the calendar date in question. -
There is a lot of criticism given to players of other instruments who decide to play bass. Much of it justified IMHO. But I quite enjoyed Steve Winwood's playing on "Empty Pages" from the Traffic album "John Barleycorn must die". A bit loose, but it fits the late 60s/early 70s vibe of the album. In my very humble opinion. Not that it's flashy or virtuoso playing, but IMHO it just works. Anyone else agree or disagree? Ibanez Acoustic Bass and Hard case.
Annoying Twit replied to ukbassboy's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Sold for £102. With the hard case, surely that's a BAAAAAAAAAARRRGGGAAAAIIIIINNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!! Wouldn't the hard case be worth £30-40 on its own? -
The FGN Les Paul guitars are sold for quite a high price. The start at 1000 euros and go up. I've seen £549 as a price for a FGN strat. (googles). Ah, 749 euros for a P-bass. Squier Vintage Modified Precision TB - £100 BIN
Annoying Twit replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
gone! -
There's something fairly similar looking in a "Cash Generator" near me. Except that it's a double pickup six string with a trem. No brand name, but a "Made in Taiwan" sticker on it. Initially I was interested to see something historic in a pawn shop. But, the closer I looked, the more it looked like utter cr*p.

Advice on creating "softer" bass riffs
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Theory and Technique
Thanks. You're absolutely right on the money. By random chance I have both a bass with me, and my Vox Amplug thingie, and my communal office is deserted. Even looking at the basic arpeggios on http://www.cyberfretbass.com/arpeggios/basic/index.php, there's clearly going to be a lot of value in the arpeggios. I was thinking that when I was playing that in going through the scales I'd be including the arpeggios, but I was sticking with what was comfortable. When playing any jump where I fret a higher or lower string with the same finger as the previous note, particularly the pinkie, I found it extremely clumsy. So I clearly haven't been doing that. But I was finding even major key patterns/riffs, and then by introducing a bit of variety, made them sound not so "children's song". I'll check out arpeggios for more than the basic major and minor triads too. Ta muchly. -
When I sit down to "jam", I enjoy coming up with bass riffs. However, they seem to be all of a certain flavour. Too "hard", too "regular", and minor pentatonic-ish. I seem to fall into rhythmic patterns that do include syncopation, but a bit "1980s synth pop bass line", too few notes with too much emphasis on individual notes. I think the following song (not me of course!) is a good example of the kind of thing I end up with: http://www.we7.com/#/track/Jijy!trackId=3929555 I've tried making riffs from major scales, but I seem to end up with something that sounds too "children's song". I'm thinking something like the riff to The Beatles "Something" or even "Silly Love Songs". Any hints as to where I can go to in terms of scales and rhythms?

Yamaha TRB 1006, Trans Black finish
Annoying Twit replied to pantherairsoft's topic in Basses For Sale
I hope the OP will forgive my effectively content-free followup, but the first time I tried a 6 string was a Yamaha TRB1006 in Derby Cash Converters. Given the necessary size of the fretboard I was really surprised how comfortable the bass felt and how enjoyable it was to play it. I ended up getting a Shine 6'er, more in keeping with my primitive skills and what I could justify paying for a bass, but I have a real soft-spot for the TRB1006s. If I remember correctly, Derby Cash Converters were selling theirs for £599. This was some time ago and my memory is ..... what was I saying again? -

Ugh. I don't like the look of this at all. What's going on around where the thru neck joins the body, as you can see on the back? What are those holes, and surely that's not Rick workmanship in fitting the wings?

It looks like a fun project for someone, but I certainly don't want to take up a project as it would eat into valuable practice time. (And provide me with another excuse for practice procrastination).
