Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Annoying Twit replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Now that the Lyle bass is listed at a low starting price, we'll see how high it goes. Unlike the previous threads on this bass, where the starting price was £500 or more. I'm betting that the reserve is high enough so that it will never sell. I had a look through Yahoo Japan auctions for old Ibanez basses. I was very surprised to see how few there were. There were only 102 basses in total, and very few were anything other than the current(ish) production instruments. http://list5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/%e3%8...ode=2&apg=5 Though, I suppose given the size of the country, that's proportionally more than the 40 Ibanez basses on sale on UK ebay. With 302 Ibanez basses, the USA ebay appears to be in the lead. However, I looked at these to see what an Ibanez Artist bass would be going for at present. There's only one listing, and it's that German knut. I was curious about the Aria STB basses that were being sold for £100 brand new last year. Not sure if should say who, but a forum member here owns one. Upon me asking, he said that he finds the Aria to be better than the Affinity Squire Jazz basses, but not as good as the Vintage Modified or Classic Vibe. Here's a quote (hope I'm not breaking moral privacy guidelines since this is from a PM).
The Aria is a cracking little bass. I bought it just to use as a knockabout bass that i can leave at venues and not care about, no great loss if it gets nicked or damaged. When i received it i couldn't stop playing it! The bridge pickup is excellent, it does the Jaco sound better than any other Jazz i've had and is actually louder than the neck pickup. With both pickups on you can really hear the influence of the bridge unit.Wether i got lucky and got a particularly good example or they're all like that is anyone's guess
Some time ago I was watching out for VM and CV jazz basses on ebay, but never saw any go for £100-150, they were consistently more expensive than that. Except for the fretless ones, where there were some real bargains. There was an Aria STB on ebay a few days ago, which was going for £60 or so including an amp! And it got no bids. Making your bass ebay sale "pickup only" when you live in Windermere might not be a good idea. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=70787 IMuso claims to have them at stock, at a price of £109. http://www.imuso.co.uk/Information-Menu/Re...azz-Bass-Guitar I first noted them on the website of Hartnoll guitars in Plymouth. But, they've had them as "out of stock" for yonks. http://www.hartnollguitars.co.uk/products.asp?id=134 They turn up occasionally on ebay, but often for higher prices than the new prices I was seeing before.

Thanks. Also, what is an Aria Pro 2 "SB Special"? And how does it compare to the classic SB 1000s, etc? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT -
That's one way to make your photo of yet another Jazz Bass look a bit different.
Well as to how it was done I really have no clue. All I know is that I sent the guy an email (to be honest I can't remember if it was via the eBay messaging service or direct to the hotmail address he gave in the auction) and a day or two later there were alot of dodgy auctions on my account. I'm assuming the contact I had with him was somehow involved, since I've never had a problem with my account security before or since. I'm pretty sure that had I not contacted him I wouldn't have had any problems, unless, of course, you have any other explanation that doesn't involve a thoroughly staggering coincidence?
An email may contain the IP address of the originating computer. If so, and if that computer is not properly protected, then the bad guy might try attacking the computer remotely. If the computer is successfully compromised the bad guy then might install a key logger. If this is done, then since the bad guy knows your ebay username, it would be easy to look through the key log for the username followed by a potential password.

I can confirm that the seller is friendly and cooperative if you contact him. But, he doesn't live in Leicester, but in a small village a few miles outside Leicester. For non-car owning me this is a problem, particularly in the run up to Christmas. It was the Richwood hollow body bass I was interested in, not the Hohner. But that's because I'd really like an Eastwood Classic 4, and I was wondering whether the Richwood might be a more available substitute. But I can't bid on the off-chance that it has the sound I'm looking for. Even though both are 60s inspired (I think) short scale hollow bodied double humbucker basses. But, the seller gives the impression of being a friendly guy, and personally I wish him luck in selling his basses and buying the Fender Precision (if I remember correctly) he's after.

Are these as good as the seller suggests? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MEGA-RARE-1970s-LYLE...=item2ea9d8f76e -
I have no clips of me and YouTube has one video which is a bit rubbish and takes 1.38 for the guy to even start playing
Erm, I hope that isn't showing the strings off in their best light. As IMHO that didn't sound very good to me. As you mention, a bit rubbish. But it didn't sound like a double bass to me. And I'm not sure I like the sound that bass makes.

Thanks. Do any of the Cort Curbow basses have real wood bodies like the Tanglewood, or are they all Luthite and Ebonal like the Cort Curbows I see online?
-
This is, to my eyes, a really nice looking Tanglewood bass. So much better than the ones I see frequently in pawn shops. Is this one of the Cort-built Tanglewood basses?
Any classic bass fitted with Rotosound TruBass strings. They are like double bass strings for an electric bass. I have some on a P-bass and have had several comments about them (even someone coming in from the other room as they thought it was a double bass).
Sound clips?
Wow....that singlecut S2 sure is ugly. I normally love singlecuts aswell.
I think it looks quite nice. Really distinctive, though often that leads to love it or hate it opinions. Though, I thought it looked a bit ... somehow "cheaper" than I expected when I saw it in real life up close.

I've just seen two Spear basses on sale second hand in Leicester. Both of them seemed "interesting" to me, but not something I'd want to buy right now. The first is a Spear Flextool bass, which is a Jazz looking bass, with all of J, P, and MM pickups, and four knobs (whatever they do). It doesn't have the slightly Jamaican looking colour scheme as per the ones I found online. http://www.fretmusic.co.uk/spear-rfb-flext...1-pr-17885.html The second is a Spear S2 6 string bass. http://www.fretmusic.co.uk/spear-s-2-6-str...1-pr-17882.html I don't know if this info is of use to anyone, but if anyone wants to know the actual shop location, PM me. The Flextool is being sold for £200 which I believe is overpriced compared to a new online price of £250, but the S2 is being sold for £250, which I think is a good price. (Hoping I identified the model numbers correctly, they certainly look to be the right basses).

From the Willow site, this is an interesting look for a Jazz Bass. http://willowsguitar.com/willow_sub12_1.html The main picture is too large to inline, so look here.

I have no direct experience. However, some time ago I noticed the Harley Benton Jazz bass was exceptionally cheap, the MB22-2T. However, the HC reviews were a bit off-putting. It seems the electronics were quite poor. This might not be a problem if your intention is to "pimp" the bass. The reviews that mentioned the basic wood and the hardware thought they were OK. http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...on/MB22-2T/10/1

Isn't the Shine Violin bass semi-hollow or hollow? Short scale and humbuckers? I'm in general after a four string Jazz bass as I want at least one "regular" instrument. And I prefer the jazz tone to the precision tone and the musicman tone. However, I love the sound of the Eastwood Classic 4 as per this youtube video. Particularly the neck pickup alone sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmSUjhcJaPo If the Shine, in some ways a similar instrument, sounded like that, the first of the two basses in the clip, I'd be interested. However, I don't have a car, and that funny little blue bus that goes from Leicester to Rugby takes over an hour each way. Edit: De-crypticisation: I'd like to hear a recording of the bass if you think similar sounds to the Eastwood can be obtained. I can pick it up. Though I would have to wait for an appropriate day, and would like to know if your normal travels bring you closer to Leicester.

It seems to me that a youtube video would be very useful thing to create when selling a bass? E.g. this, but maybe without the seeming clipping or whatever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu0nGiNm-ak How come we see so many basses being sold, but almost no videos?

Anyone out there really like inlays?
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I do like the dinosaur inlays on the fretboard of the six. Though, much of the rest doesn't do it for me. -
I've decided that as a beginner, having both a fretted six string and a fretted five string with similar pickups is not sensible. I've actually responded to a PM requesting pricing on a guitar forum where I mentioned my overload on basses. But just thinking about it, if I sold the V, I'd then look for a 4 thinking that having a six and a four gives me more options than a six and a five, and having just a six perhaps isn't sensible either. So, in the sense of "if you don't ask, you don't get", I thought I'd mention this here to see if there is a shortcut to selling and buying. No gig bag. Very nice condition. Blue. Originally bought from here.

What do you play if you're trying a bass in a music shop?
Annoying Twit replied to molan's topic in General Discussion
Well, given my skill level, the w***ery is out. Generally I'll play some riffs and simple lines, plus some pentatonic improvisation.
1) Play open strings 2) Fret all notes up and down neck 3) Check what the knobs do 4) How does it sound/feel? (you should know by now!) Buy it... or not.
But that's what I should be doing. -

Aren't you limiting your options by suggesting (if not insisting upon) local pickup?
