Has Basschat had a negative effect on your wallet?
Annoying Twit replied to lateralus462's topic in General Discussion
Basschat has had a beneficial effect on my wallet as its a good place to buy second hand stuff that otherwise I might have bought new. -

He lists £20 by parcelforce under "postage" but later says "WILL ONLY SELL TO PERSON WHO COLLECTS". Edit: "SELLING SUBJECT TO BUYING NEW BASS". Que? Is it not yet for sale then? -

Is this really the bass that Gene Simmons used for most of his career? And the strap that he used on quite few of his tours. Couldn't he afford a new strap for each tour? And the first Spector bass ever made. THIS MUST BE THE MOST COLLECTIBLE BASS EVER! But 0 bids.

Competition for Alden. No extra for the 5 string, a little bit more for six. Mahogany body with a through neck. It certainly looks impressive to the likes of moi. Though I already have a cheap six string, so no practical interest to me. Still no bids. If I had the wonga to go for a Shuker bass, then I think I'd want to go for one with more modern styling. No offense intended for the Jazz bass fans.

As in the other thread, I got "Bass Guitar for Dummies". And I also got the guitar book "fretboard roadmaps".

Isn't this a reasonable deal?
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Apart from the fact I hold a massive personal grudge against the seller (Rikki's "Music Shop", Leith Walk, Edinburgh - never, ever give them a penny of your money - cynical, dishonest, cheating w@nkers ) - it does seem reasonably priced. Jon.
I've recently not bought a mandolin because I don't like the shop it was being sold in. It's second hand/pawn shop. I'd been in there when someone was trying to return something that didn't work, and heard what they were telling the guy. Fundamentally, the conversation can be summed up as "our engineers have checked it and it's working properly" "but I can show you that it's not working" "(aggressive disinterest) our engineers have checked it and it's working properly". Buying something for the lowest price when the backup service is poor and there are problems with the product is a problem I've experienced in the past. -
I've never understood why people consider headstocks to be so important.

Foulds in Derby told me that they can order SX guitars, and I think they said basses as well.

How is this bass strung? Looking at it and considering B-C to be standard for a six string, I can't guess which extra string this bass has. It looks like it might be a low F#, as there seem to be quite a few thick strings. But could someone more knowledgeable and eagle-eyed comment? BTW: I'm not thinking of buying it, just curious. Watchdogs have decided it is not a swearword after probing complaints about its use on a poster for cider. The Advertising Standards Authority received a complaint after a Magners advert showed an orchard keeper saying: "Feck off bees."

It appears that you can say arse. I have that dummies book and I think it's really good, something for all bass players regardless of level. I really must start on the reading music section (he said for the umpteenth time).
I have it from the library, and want my own copy.

Now you too can learn to play bass
Annoying Twit replied to Happy Jack's topic in General Discussion
It's a pity you can't scan the whole thing. It'd be great learning riffs and exercises from the early 60s. -
Two. Not planned that way. I still think I'll sell one of them. I'm not sure I need both a fretted 5 string and a fretted 6 string at the same time. But I'm not sure where I should go from here. Yet.

"Fender" P, "Orginal Countour Body" .. hummmm
Annoying Twit replied to OldGit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Current bid £4.61. Has no-one contacted the seller yet? He said that if anyone knew for sure that it is not genuine, he'd amend his listing. -
ah fair enough- odd choice for a first bass! Then again, I don't suppose there's any harm as long as you enjoy playing it. Like everyone said, those sites are pretty comprehensive- its just unfortunate about the C string!
It's my second bass this time around. Apart from ill-planned bass playing in my teens - wish I had the internet etc. resources then that I had now. So in reality my fourth bass. Some months ago I bought a five string here. Some time after I tried a Yamaha 6 string in a shop and really liked it, but thought it wouldn't be worth me spending £500 or so on a bass yet. But then the Shine turned up. I really like the wide neck with lots of strings. There just seems to be so much choice of where to go next. Maybe I'll change my mind if I get more dexterous. Now, I've got to decide what to do. It seems silly to have both a fretted 5 string and a fretted 6 string. But the 5 string has at least better hardware than the six and doesn't have file marks on the fretboard etc.

Dean Edge Select 6 strings
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
All i know ios that the 4 and 5 strings are great, the only reason im not going of a 6er is becasue the transition from a 4 string to a 6 string might be hard, go for it man, their great.
I ended up buying a cheap Shine. So far (limited experience, both me in general and of the bass), the wooden bits that really matter seem OK. I'm not sure about some of the metal bits. But even if I replace them, still much, much, cheaper than the Dean. That bass came up again, I think. I'd have to check my massive watch list.
