I want to know whether anyone found out who strung the bass in the banner ad, and if so, what happened to him.

Is it unusual to post in this thread when I have no intention of buying any of these ... uh ... "classics". Here's what's left of a 70s Rickenfaker. Still seemed quite popular with bidders though. I wonder what the story was behind the telecasterisation of this bass. [url="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=230304503513"]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=230304503513[/url] -
I did once see a photo of an ebay item reposted on a forum. The seller had included his credit card to show scale, and the number and expiry date were clearly visible. The chrome kettle might be an urban legend. But there is this: [url="http://www.powersellersforum.com/ebayimages/reflectoporn/diningroom.jpg"]http://www.powersellersforum.com/ebayimage.../diningroom.jpg[/url] (img tags not used to protect the innocent) Edit: There are even worse ones, here, particularly the grover tuners. Look at your own peril. [url="http://www.powersellersforum.com/ebayimages/reflectoporn"]http://www.powersellersforum.com/ebayimages/reflectoporn[/url]

It's been relisted with a better description, and there is a bidder. [url="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:VRI&item=180304892614"]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=180304892614[/url]

[quote name='elom' post='325108' date='Nov 9 2008, 03:09 AM']The postage is £8 and it was playable straight out of the box. I was impressed, especially for that sort of money.[/quote] [url="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzXVhamQIMc"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzXVhamQIMc[/url] [quote]Another one played with the Harley Benton. Nice woolen jumper being worn by the vendor of this bass, it appears. [url="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOKAI-LOVE-ROCK-LES-PAUL-STYLE-BASS-GUITAR_W0QQitemZ180304251107QQcmdZViewItem"]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOKAI-LOVE-ROCK-LES-...7QQcmdZViewItem[/url]

I don't have the market knowledge to comment, but note that a fretted five string streamer standard went for £260. [url="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Warwick-Bass-Streamer-Standard-5-String_W0QQitemZ180301527248QQcmdZViewItem"]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Warwick-Bass-Streame...8QQcmdZViewItem[/url]

Shine 6 String Bass £60

If the pickups are too loud, couldn't you just lower them? -

I know that this is only £30 starting bid, but I'm sure the seller could have written a more encouraging description of it than this: [url="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OLD-JAP-BASS-GUITAR_W0QQitemZ280283324185QQcmdZViewItem"]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OLD-JAP-BASS-GUITAR_...5QQcmdZViewItem[/url] On second thoughts, the description isn't so bad. But the price is £30 + £20 p&p. So that's a minimum of £50 unless collected. Is it really worth that? -

This one has different pickups, but otherwise looks an older version of the same one. Why so much more expensive? [url="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/6-string-bass-guitar-Shine_W0QQitemZ220303851879QQcmdZViewItem"]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/6-string-bass-guitar...9QQcmdZViewItem[/url] -

[quote name='Ou7shined' post='324252' date='Nov 7 2008, 03:30 PM']It may well be great for tapping. Good luck and let us know. I have to admit my "Shine are pants" was a sweeping generalisation (which I hate) I was just inferring in as few words as possible that they are Korean/Chinese factory made and tend to be knocked together from cheap parts. This is reflected in the RRP. Oriental build quality is getting better and better so who know there might be some good apples in their rotten barrel. LOL [/quote] Well, I can't justify spending the money for Made in USA or Germany basses, or boutique basses. So, pretty well anything I'm likely to get is going to be far east factory made. I have a made in Indonesia guitar, and a made in China bass already. Given my skill level (haha!) I'm sure the bass itself is not going to be the limiting factor. Here's someone selling the five string version for over twice what I paid, not considering postage. [quote name='steve' post='324208' date='Nov 7 2008, 02:11 PM']that pic on ebay makes it look like a 12 string! you can't go wrong at £60 tho' even if its a POS it'll mod into something better unless you're really unlucky[/quote] I was hoping to practice setup, including "fret work" (I'm not sure exactly what it entails) on it. I've been told that some people buy these 6'ers to set them up with low action and practice tapping on them. I hope I'll be able to do that. -

[quote name='Ou7shined' post='324106' date='Nov 7 2008, 11:59 AM']Shine are IMHO pants, best avoid![/quote] Ah, the reviews of the Shine and the Harley Benton 6-er, which is the same bass, are generally OK for the money. Oh well, if it is pants, I imagine I'll be able to get most of my money back again. Though, is there anything wrong with it that would make it unsuitable as a cheap "project" bass to do something with. Given what I paid for it, the following reviews look to be quite good. Assuming this is the right model: [url="http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Electric+Bass/product/Shine/SB-26SN/10/1"]http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...ne/SB-26SN/10/1[/url] -
Bass with modified neck profile

When I bought it it had a very thick neck so I used a plane, file, electric sander and varnish to reduce the width. It is slim now and this procedure did not reduce the stregth of the neck. (It made me wonder why it had to be so thick in the first place.) My filing and sanding was pretty good though not perfect so there are a few bits (difficult to photograph) where you can see a file has been (you certainly won't get a splinter!). However the next buyer might wish to sand it down even more to make it even smoother.[/quote] Only £60 BIN.

This one says Japanese. [url="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COLUMBUS-Electric-BASS-Guitar_W0QQitemZ290273235739QQcmdZViewItem"]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COLUMBUS-Electric-BA...9QQcmdZViewItem[/url] I think it looks horrible. Don't mind SG basses, but this one looks just a little .... crowded. -
Interesting looking bass here. What sort of wood is that on the body? [url="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320316281111&indexURL=0&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting"]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...bayphotohosting[/url]

Bass, amp and extras for £68 delivered
Annoying Twit replied to lemmywinks's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I did actually look at the Thursday special buys for Aldi, as frequently they are themed, and if there's one thing suitable for one hobby/interest/whatever, there are a whole bunch of others. But no guitars today it seems. Somewhere I read that the binoculars they have occasionally are actually made by a reasonable company that usually makes fair quality binoculars. I wonder if the same applies to the guitars. Not that I plan to buy one. What's with the "Karaoke CD" that comes with the guitar? -
I wouldn't want to use a metal pick. Isn't there a risk of scratching the bass with a too hard pick? [url="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Solid-SILVER-Coin-Bass-Guitar-Pick-FREE-SHIP-to-WORLD_W0QQitemZ330282358795QQcmdZViewItem"]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Solid-SILVER-Coin-Ba...5QQcmdZViewItem[/url]

[quote name='benwhiteuk' post='320544' date='Nov 2 2008, 10:28 PM']isn't there a few thread on this bass now?[/quote] Three that I'm aware of. I've just realised that the listing doesn't say exactly which model of bass it is. So without a photo, how could you know what you are bidding on?
