Albums that are not given the recognition they deserve.
People are recommending some real stinkers here
But, in a way that's the point of the thread. Albums that are widely considered to be stinkers but which aren't that bad or actually are quite good makes them an unappreciated album. From the ones that I recommended, I'd say that Wings at the Speed of Sound is the one that's widely considered to be a stinker, but I disagree. I think it's full of great songs. I listened to Ghosts of Princes in the Tower (as an example) and I wasn't overwhelmed, but music appreciation is highly subjective, and I wouldn't want to go around insisting that my view is the only correct one. -

Joe Strummer and the Mescelaros - Streetcore. Wings - Wings at the Speed of Sound. George Harrison - Dark Horse. シオン - 夜しか泳がない and many other classic albums that come from a non-Western countries. -
How often do you break a string ? I've never broken one in 20 years.
Erroneous used to break them frequently. I'd guess it depends on playing style, but when I read of Erroneous's record, I was gobsmacked.

DEKOS! Just popped up, including this left handed Jazz bass. Didn't someone want one of these to make a reverse headstock righty? http://www.thomann.d...ge_ser_deko.htm I can't remember what was up, and what wasn't. 1973 Japanese 'Ideal' bass. Weird or wonderful?
You're setting the bar pretty low ...
I have seen some old Teisco and similar instruments which were unbelievably off-putting. -
Lonnie's influence can't be understated. But re: your point about another band filling the void if The Beatles hadn't made it... of course. But it's incredibly unlikely anyone would have made a crater as big as The Beatles. I'm going to say it again - the Beatles phenomenon was the result of a perfect storm, unlikely to be repeated.
I think that at some time it will be repeated, but perhaps not with music. Or not with music as we know it.

Sounds like a result. Enjoy your NDBD. -
I think there is a failure to understand. I don't think the OP is saying that The Beatles were responsible for all music since 1963, just that they were a very big influence on current music, but not the only one. This thread has discussed the ways that The Beatles were influenced by others, and other musical acts that were highly influential (e.g. Kraftwerk, De La Soul) since then.

Dare I say it that some of these reissues might be far superior instruments to the originals? -
If nothing this thread has opened my eyes to the fact that the Beatles invented a whole bunch of chords that just were not around before 1965. How much of this was due to the electric guitar and the mechanics of finding 6 note chords that maybe no one had applied is another question. It would be interesting to listen critically to some Pink Floyd and Beatles side to side on timelines to see how much crossover there is. Because I still find it very hard to believe that just one group can be singlehandedly responsible for the '60s. .
Que? I assume you're not being serious here because they introduced chords and harmonic techniques that weren't in common use in the pop/rock of that era, but were being used and had been used in other musical genres. The Beatles took influence from other people, and were very upfront about this. E.g. lyrical influence from Dylan, altered bass from The Beach Boys, etc. I don't think anyone is actually saying that The Beatles were singlehandedly responsible for the 60s, but they were the biggest influencing factor on popular music in that time. I've read that people used to wait around until The Beatles released their next album, so that they knew where the bar for popular music would be for the next six months.
Agreed. If he was selling loads of them, then you could say he's cornered the market on winning them, but he hasn't. Besides, if any one of us were to get a Deko and decide it's not for you, what would you do? If you send it back, fine. If you go to sell in an auction, what makes you different to him?
It would be different if the eBay listing said that this was a Deko. I was thinking that if I sold, I would mention that it is a 'factory second' and give a detailed description of what, if anything, is wrong with it. And I would mention 'decoration only' in the listing, but describe it's actual level of playability. And I'd show a close up of the D stamp. @Bassassin - I checked and he has sold some stuff at prices that would make it worthwhile. -

I'm not sure that it would help to contact Thomann. Pointing out that the dekos will sell for more than the price Thomann is asking may not be helpful in the long run, though as a large organisation, they should know. It does seem that lots of us are getting lots of dekos. So, while it may take longer to obtain the dekos we want (e.g. the huge wait for the four string fretted natural acoustic), there are still enough to go around. -
eBay has more than double the amount of these deko basses than Thomann has... for more than double the price. Nothing in description to say they are seconds/B-stock. What a shyster.
Can you post a link or two? -

Annoying Twit replied to spectoremg's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Re the "Ideal" - it's the usual make-up-some-crap-because-no one-knows-any-different rubbish you see with so many old MIJs. The bass is a re-badged Teisco, from probably around 1968 or '69 by the looks, "Ideal" will be some generic importer/catalogue brand, it looks in nice condition for its age, if everything works properly and it plays OK it should be good for about £200 tops. In the Real World, that would be. Jon.
I'm surprised that you value it as high as £200. NB: I'm not doubting you, just expressing my surprise that it's worth that much. -
The Howard Goodall video is a very interesting one. There are things that the Beatles did with the music around them that was more than just be influenced. The changed the game, the whole way music was constructed. New ways of harmonising chordal work etc. If you've ever played any Elton John songs and understood the chord changes then that's something that just wasn't around before the Beatles. It's very clever and I'm very surprised that 4 poor lads from Liverpool with no formal music qualification or education could have done that. Hence the George Martin link. Although Paul and John may well have just bought all their influences into a melting pot and played what they did without knowing why. According to the video there was a clear evolution of their songs.
Paul in particular was very keen on show tunes, where quite sophisticated harmony would be used. As well as other more advanced concepts (compared to early 1960s rock/pop) such as modulation to different keys that the Beatles used right from the start. Didn't Bob Dylan say that the chords that the Beatles used were outrageous. Have you seen Allan Pollock's "Notes On..." series analysing the Beatles' songs? http://www.icce.rug...._projects.shtml It's surprising how much there is going on in even the simple sounding early songs such as "Love Me Do", but in particular by the time of songs such as "Another Girl". Sounds, simple, but there are some tricky key changes in there.
There's no link to the actual study there, but I presume it was based on identifying an "X fan" as someone who predominantly downloaded stuff labelled as "X", and then seeing what else they downloaded.
There would be lots of ways of measuring this. One problem might be that different methods of calculating the statistic might give different results. If I was doing it, I would count each download for a genre, and assign that a number between 0.0 and 1.0 depending on how exclusively the person downloading downloads that genre. E.g. if the person downloading a country track downloads country 25% of the time, then I'd count each of their downloads as a 0.25. I'd then take the average for all country downloads, which might be say 0.41. This might compare to pop music which might have an average of 0.51, showing that pop music fans are more insular than country music fans. This avoids the problems of having to classify individual fans as being a fan of a single genre.

I was amazed to read that there was a deko neck through Les Paul. I would guess that was an experimental prototype. "guess". Any chance of a link? I had a look at the mobile site, and there are two sold out Les Pauls, but both are set necks. I'm thinking that HB may have looked at doing something like the Agile set neck LPs.
It shouldn't if it's a flat shim (not necessarily uniform thickness) making good mechanical contact all along its length with both the bridge saddle and the piezo strip.
Wouldn't it be easier to replace the bridge? Surely they can't cost much.
