Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
My program was left running on my desk at work since yesterday at about this time. In that time, the black four string fretted acoustic bass sold out. Also, a left handed Hofner style 'beatbass' appeared and sold. Anyone get that one? The number of long-term available dekos is going down. There only really is the four string natural fretted acoustic, five string fretted natural acoustic, and a left-handed four string fretted natural acoustic now. The banjo is still there if anyone wants it EDIT: Even less now. The four string fretted acoustic has sold out. -
Oh dear. I appear to have just bought that. How did that happen!!
Very happy that you did. I hope it's good. I see that there was a Ukulele bass deko sometime during the night. Anyone grab it/one of them? -
I want to know how this instrument came into being. It looks like somebody approached one of the Chinese guitar makers and asked them to build a Chapman Stick. The owner then did some really hacky mods to it. Why though?!?! Why does this instrument exist? Why do the strings crowd into the tailpiece? How many strings should it really have?
I would guess it is being made because people are buying them. There will be a price at which anything will sell, no matter how bad it is. Because people are optimistic, and see something they really want and can't get elsewhere. And they start justifying to themselves that it can't be that bad. Or maybe they can fix it. Or.... Or: It could be for this reason: http://www.sevenstri...-tennessee.html
Anyone know where I can get one of the 15 string Tennessee basses? I know this thing has become hated, and for good reason. However I read in a review where someone got one from ebay for just $89! Hell, as an extended range instrument lover I NEED this, just to hang on my wall. I would love for someone to walk in and be in awe of my 6,7,8 strings and then I show em this! People are always buying big retarded things just for novelty, hell has anyone ever seen the Devastator dildo? There better not be a bitch that is using that! it better just serve as a dinner centerpiece! So, does anyone have any brand/store info that can help me find one of these things? lol

And of course that top string could be used to anchor a boat
On a 15 string bass, you'd expect the lowest frequency string to be suitable for an anchor, and the highest frequency string for a fishing line.

Do the cheaper synths such as the Miniak, the Blofeld, the Novavation Mininova have as good sound quality as the much more expensive synths such as the Yamaha Motifs etc? I can see that the expensive synths are in much more impressive packages with better IO and connectively, and have more power/polyphony. But, is there a big difference in the sound quality? I do realise that the sound generation methods are very different, e.g. the synths typically don't have much in the way of samples of natural instruments. But, in terms of the brightness, clarity, and lack of aliasing of the oscillators, filters, etc. is there a big difference?

It'll be interesting to see if it comes back again. -
I made an offer. But, I can't remember how much. I assure everyone it wasn't £1000!

Best colour for a Jazz style bass
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I don't inderstand why it is described as a precision bass when everything about it except the headstock logo says jazz bass to me.
I was blinded by the purity colour and didn't look at the details. It's a photo mixup. The bass body has a maple fretboard with block inlays. The photos of the headstock shows a rosewood fretboard. As would be expected if one belonged to a VMJ and the other belonged to a VMP. The candy apple red PJ looks nice, but IMHO not as nice as the jazz. -
Black flag?
-
I generally go for natural basses. However, candy apple red with a maple fretboard and black pick guard just works so well on a jazz bass. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Precision-Bass-Candy-Apple-Red-/171695438006?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item27f9d878b6 Yep, this is unashamedly a trivial post.
How did you manage to see the offers? I had a look but can't see them.
Goofbay best offer tool. I don't know exactly how reliable it is, but it usually comes up with plausible best offers. http://www.goofbid.c...ffers_tool.html Is there anyone around here who can check the best offers for their own items to check that it works properly? Personally I believe that if there was a bid of £1000, then it's probably not a serious offer. And that it will return again some time in the future. I wonder if the £250 offer was genuine.
-
It seems that he accepted an offer of £1000 for it. Not too sure about that as the offer is dated the 25th Feb 2015, and it's only the 24th. It was amusing to see all the other offers. Apart from one of £250, most of them were in the £50 or thereabouts range. Some where £1.50 and so.

Thanks BotB. The five string fretless acoustic has sold out. The basic six decos have been around so long that I guessed that there were loads of them. Not any more it seems. -
I must admit that I was thinking that this looked a reasonable bass for an old Kay. Not worth much, but with a £1 starting bid, it'll find a reasonable price for itself. Then I saw photo 4... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fully-refurbished-Kay-Bass-/111605749999?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item19fc3898ef
Apropos of which, a quick skim through FleaBay last night revealed a couple of chancers with Thunder 1As priced around £250. Never gonna happen.
I saw those. I used the term 'dreamers' however -
Regular gigging and its effects on relationships
Annoying Twit replied to sprocketflup's topic in General Discussion
Pretty much all the regularly gigging musicians I know are either single or have been divorced at least once, and it's the gigging that was always cited as the problem. When I was gigging the girl I was engaged to at the time gave me endless sh*t about it. I remember reading somewhere a few years ago that the incidence of divorce amongst professional musicians is one of the highest there is.
I was curious about this, and checked it out. http://www.businessinsider.com/highest-divorce-rates-by-profession-2010-9?op=1&IR=T Dancers and Choreographers come top of the list. -
Any news about the new David Gilmour album? Everything seems to have gone quiet on it.

Since it's your 60th birthday, I think what you should do is buy yourself 60 basses all at once.

Would You Buy A Bass with No Truss Rod?
Annoying Twit replied to discreet's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Wishbasses are designed not to have truss rods. That's different to designing something with a trussrod which then doesn't work.
OK, I see. The truss rod that doesn't work reminds me of the mylespaul.com thread I posted the other day. A Chibson had a fake truss rod. Which was the adjustment hex socket welded to a strange bent piece of metal in the next which was not a working truss rod. -
I thought it might make a reasonable basis for a 5+5 tapper (especially as it has 10 string anchors). But £55 is still not enough for him. What does he want, the moon on a stick?
Would it be cyber-bullying if all of us offered him £59.26 every hour for a week?

Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
The 4 string acoustic one.
Sorry. Possibly due to morningitis, I completely missed the word 'uke' in your post. How is yours? I've heard mixed reviews. Some people say they're great. Some people have been more critical of them.
The precision I bought was 37 Euros which my web converter recons is £27.36. If it was up for £19 that's a real bargain.
I wonder if this is a permanent price change, or whether they are pricing depending on how much is wrong with them. The PB did stick around for quite some time compared to others (The L500 LP copy disappeared so quickly it wasn't even on the list when the deco page was auto-loaded in my browser), even at that price.
