  1. Nice. Looks similar to my Squier VM Mustang, which has a maple neck. I always prefer black plates. Like the lollipop tuners. Whilst it's hard to tone down the silver with that massive bridge, I had some black pickguard screws which I used on the black plate, looks good. I guess there is a shielding issue with mine too, as there is a buzz. Obviously it goes away when touching the strings, but I'd rather it wasn't there at all. Noisy tone pot too (not that I ever use it, stays fully open), so may get the pots replaced or a new loom put in. The bridge saddles are a bit wonky on mine, not sure if this is deliberate, or if I should level them off. I also got some medium scale strings on the way, which I only learned after fitting shorts, are needed for string thru Mustangs. Oh well. You learn something new every day.
  2. I’m not giving up just yet. It is fun to play. I’d love to swap out my sunburst for a black one though. Or the FSR Candy Apple Red which is even rarer
  3. Thanks. So 21.7mm = 0.854". Still sounds a little chunky, but with the jazz width nut, must still be nice to play - good to hear that it feels thin and fast.
  4. Thanks for the info. The neck thickness (presumably you meant 22.5mm), would equal around 0.885". That's chunkier than the chunkiest P neck I've played. Does it feel that thick? Also I'm guessing (hoping) that's a satin finish front and back? Weird that they downsized most things from a long scale Ray but not the control plate. I know I haven't even got the bass yet, but I'm not sure how long I can hold off, and as I like to overthink these things, what gig bag / semi-rigid / hard case do owners of these recommend? All I have is a very cheap gig bag with the most basic padding, so if/when I get one of these Rays, I'd want something better for sure. Actually one thing I love about SS is that I can fit one in the boot of the cars. Not that I usually leave a bass in the car anyway, but it's nice to know it's not on show if I pop somewhere before or after playing.
  5. After playing my Squier VM Mustang properly stood up, I’m a little on the fence I have to say. The satin maple neck is so nice and easy to play, I love it. Wasn’t sure how I’d take to the jazz width nut as I’ve played mainly P basses for years, but this combined with the fairly slim neck was a delight. It didn’t feel scrawny like I thought it might. The lighter weight and lesser stretches of short scale really appeal to me, especially having had back issues recently. I can’t say I was a huge fan of how the stock pickup sounded when playing solo through my practice amp, but it sounded good in the ‘in ears’ band mix. The only sticking point which is a fairly sizeable one, as a bass must feel comfy, is the lack of a body contour. I’ve never had a slab bodied bass before, so I half expected this to be the case, but felt I had to at least try a Mustang. The slab didn’t bother me greatly when playing it acoustically in my lap (a lot of fun I must say), but I felt I spent most of band practice wriggling the bass body about to try and find a comfy playing position that didn’t involve the upper horn jamming itself into my gut. I feel this could be a deal breaker. But the revelation of the ease of play and lighter weight of short scale, makes me think that if I find a shorty I really love, I’d consider going all out with SS. I’m already thinking I’ll make the move to jazz necks regardless after how easy to play this Mustang neck is. Now I’m looking at shorties with body contours, and am starting to get major GAS for a short Stingray. I’ve never played a Ray despite always liking the sound on albums they feature on, so I feel it’s an itch I have to scratch at some point anyway. Can anyone with a short Ray give their general thoughts and answer these questions please? : How comfy it is to play standing? How thick is the neck, front to back (measurement with calipers just before 1st fret would be a bonus) - is it somewhere inbetween a jazz & precision in terms of thickness? This may seem like an odd question, and once I play it I may find it doesn’t bother me anyway, but visually the massive silver banana control plate just looks silly to me, annoyingly especially on the colours I prefer (Black & Dropped Copper). A quick search and I see that there are blacked out plates on some Rays, most likely long scale ones though. Anyway, the question! Do you think a blacked out plate is out there that would be a drop in replacement for the SS one, or has anyone had their silver one spray painted? Thanks, Ray fans
  6. It wasn’t a medium scale packet so it’s not that a mistake was made. I ordered short scale but was just surprised that they aren’t right if you have a string thru bridge. I could mention it to the eBay seller, perhaps they’d send me a medium scale pack of EXL160M as a goodwill gesture, I can return these but obviously they’ve been cut now!
  7. Yes I did. Thanks for the info. I still don’t get it though. You can use a long scale string on a long scale bass with string thru bridge without issue, but you can’t use a short scale string on a short scale bass with string thru bridge?!

Bought a set of strings from Kev. Arrived in good time, many thanks
  9. Well I hadn’t foreseen this. Just went to restring my newly acquired Mustang and the E, A & D strings all taper before the nut. I hadn’t thought it would be an issue, but I guess it’s due to the string thru bridge. That’s never an issue when stringing a long scale bass though. Strings are D’Addario 50-105 EXL160S nickel rounds. How would anyone possibly know when ordering that they aren’t exactly suitable if you have a short scale string thru bass?! I’m guessing / hoping it won’t be an issue when playing, it just looks really odd. What nickel rounds fit a string thru shorty well from peoples’ experience, or would going to medium scale strings help? Thanks
  10. I’ve seen comments here and there that the necks are nice on these, can anyone shed any light on the neck profiles on them? I mean the front to back thickness mainly. If anyone is able to measure with calipers just before the 1st fret that would be really helpful. Are they on the slim or chunky side of a P neck? Thanks
  11. Great seller. Anyone on the fence I suggest you go for it
  12. This looks stunning, but way out of my budget. GLWTS
  13. I wonder if the QC has improved recently, I mean I’ve seen numerous negative comments about short rays
  14. It’s here. A bit lighter than I expected at 3.2Kg/7.2lbs, which is good. There are an absurd amount of wraps around the tuning posts, it’s almost like the previous owner put long scale strings on. I’ve never played flats before. Interesting to try, they feel so nice and smooth, but not really my thing as I prefer the brighter zing of rounds. Got some D’Addario XL nickel rounds on the way. This may be a silly question, but should the pickups be high in the middle of the fretboard, sloping to low on the outer edges, following the radius, like on a P bass? This doesn’t look quite right . . . Fun to play on my lap as expected, I’ll have to see what’s it’s like to strap on, stand up and play. Love the satin almost unfinished neck look
  15. I guess the CV line eventually replaced them. I quite like the look of the Oly White CV but couln’t deal with that heavy glossed neck. The Mikey Way model intrigues me with the Humbucker, metallic sparkle & satin finish neck, I’m not a fan of the comp stripe though. Is there a ballpark used price they go for? I can only find a £430 (best offer accepted) in eBay sold items
  16. Ideally I’d have preferred a black one but I only recently even knew this model ever existed after doing some of my own research into Mustangs. It seems there was a FSR Candy Apple Red of this too. I guess they don’t come up for sale often due to a combination of relatively not many being made before being discontinued, and people liking them so much they hang onto them
  17. Don’t know if anyone saw this on eBay but they don’t come up often so I had to grab this - Squier Vintage Modified Mustang, the ones that were only made from around 2011-2013. It’s on its way now and I’m stupidly refreshing the tracking like my life depends on it. I’ve never played a Mustang and never like Sunburst but think this looks pretty nice with satin maple neck & string thru’ bridge, and figured if I don’t like it, I can easily move it on.
  18. Squier short scale neck only, from a 2018 Squier Vintage Modified short scale Jaguar bass which I ended up disassembling. One of the last made before the bass was discontinued. Really nice neck which I kept with the idea of maybe putting it on a Mustang someday, then I did some searching and I believe it doesn’t fit them anyway, so this is of no use to me. 20 fret Indian Laurel board with dots and side dots. Lovely fast smooth satin finish on back. Truss rod adjustment at nut (no tool included). Gloss black headstock front, satin rear. Stock tuners, neck plate, screws, string tree & nut. Very good to excellent used condition, a couple of very tiny bumps on back of neck, barely noticeable, no dings, a couple of very fine scratches on headstock front. I tried to show this in a pic, there are some small bits of residue on the top edge of the fretboard here and there - I have no idea what this is, it was like it when I got it, seems to be cosmetic only, it’s not sticky at all, I can’t feel it when playing. It’s quite an unusual combination of a Jazz width nut of 1.5” but a more Precision like front to back thickness of 0.835” just before the 1st fret, so it certainly doesn’t feel scrawny. I’ve never sold a neck before so have absolutely no idea what to list this at. I guess someone will make an offer if they think I’ve overpriced it, or it simply won’t sell. Any questions please just ask, thanks. £50 delivered or collection in person from Southport area.
  19. Oh boy. This sounds extremely familiar; the opinions of the people who actually play and sing the songs tossed aside in favour of decisions being made by the ‘powers that be’ who generally don’t have a musical bone in their body
