The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
dmc79 replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks, I mentioned that I think that’s what’s on them anyway. I suspect I’ll prefer D’Addario medium scale rounds anyway. Just deciding between regular light 45-100 or regular 50-105. I’ve seen that if the E is too thin, it’s floppy & boingy like a rubber band, or if it’s too thick it ends up sounding muddy. Interested in thoughts on best gauge for Mustangs, particularly with rounds. Thanks -

Thanks, I recall you liking those before. They are coated right? Medium or long scale? I’d just moved onto GHS Pressurewounds on the P bass, really nice smooth rounds with reduced finger noise, like slightly worn in rounds right out of the packet. Doesn’t look like they do them in medium scale, which is a shame. Do people use long scale strings on Mustangs? If so I do have a set of ML7200 Pressurewounds I could try. I already know not to use short scale on Mustangs, I learned that the hard way last time. -

Just picked up this absolute beauty. 2004/5 CIJ Mustang (thanks @wayne58) My first ever Japanese Fender bass, heard so much about them. The colour is lovely, I’ve always thought Fiesta Red looked quite pink and was never that keen on it. Does this colour fade over time or something? It looks more orange than red to me, which is great as I’ve always had a thing for orange basses after lusting after the early 2000s Sunset Orange Transparent P bass for a long time. I’m having another go at short scale more out of necessity than anything. Struggling with the weight and finger stretches of a P bass. I love a Precision but it seems to take more effort to play as time goes on, and it really takes its toll on my back, shoulders & neck. This weighs in at a more manageable 3.5Kg / 7.8lbs. I hope I can adjust to playing SS, I’m not sure I gave the only previous Mustang I’ve had (Squier Vintage Modified) enough time in all fairness. Anyway, I’ve raised the action a little (it was very low) and it’s a huge amount of fun to play sat down / lying down, I’m not that used to a Jazz width nut but I really like it. The neck is fantastic and so easy to play. I’ve never liked glossy finish necks much, but this is so fast! May take some adjustment to playing standing but the bass just feels so effortless, it’s almost like cheating! It has what I believe to be LaBella 760F-MUS flats on it. So smooth, but flats aren’t really my thing, even if people rave about these strings. I know this is kind of a Mustang thing, but I’m not sure I can deal with the clacky, dull thud thing. I suspect I’ll try D’Addario EXL170M regular light rounds (45-100), EXL160M medium rounds (50-105) or ECB81M Chromes (45-100) if I want to try brighter flats. I’d like a little more tension, I won’t be needing to bend strings, slap or anything like that. Just pick & fingers. Open to any suggestions! -
Anyone know what strings these are? Black silks on rounds
dmc79 replied to Robert Manning's topic in Bass Guitars
They could well be GHS Pressurewounds. I use them. They are rounds but are slightly flattened during the process, they call it 'Alloy 52'. They feel smoother than a normal nickel round and give off less finger squeak, they play & sound like slightly worn in nickel rounds without that top end zing you get with brand new rounds for a while. They have black silks, and match your description of them feeling smooth. If you like em, keep em, they're not cheap to buy new. I believe they last well, mine haven't been on long enough to comment on that yet. -
WITHDRAWN Want to move on a set of lightly used Nickel Roundwound Strings that were on a bass I got from here which I replaced with another set (even though these were fine!). Cut for a Precision bass / inline tuners. Just going by the ball ends & measurements (with digital calipers), they are 50-67-90-120 so I think it’s fairly safe to presume they are D’Addario EXL160BT balanced tension medium gauge. Seem to have plenty of life left in them. Ignore the packaging, that’s just what I’ll use to post them in, well that and a padded envelope! £10 delivered.

*SOLD* For sale (no trade offers please) is a 2016/17 right handed long scale Fender MIM Precision bass in Arctic White with rosewood fingerboard, with upgraded pickups and wiring. Before I go any further, as I know this is important to many of us, this bass weighs a reasonable 4.0kg (8.8 lbs) on my digital luggage scales - a touch more than the Player P’s I’ve had, but less than every USA P bass I’ve had. It balances well. It’s in excellent condition and has clearly been looked after. There are no dings, paint chips, chunks out of the back of the neck, etc, just a couple of tiny what I guess you’d call scuffs on the body which are nigh on impossible to see / photograph. It has a nice dark rosewood fingerboard on a ‘tinted satin urethane’ finished maple neck. The board was lemon oiled in September 2023. The neck has the usual 1.625” P nut width, but has a very slim neck front to back, measured with digital calipers as 0.802” at the 1st fret and 0.886” at the 12th fret. It’s the slimmest Fender P bass neck I’ve played, and is nice and fast with the satin urethane finish. It’s effectively a ‘Slim C’ neck profile though isn’t spec’d as such. The Arctic White colour is very nice, closer to the cool white of the Player ‘Polar White’ than a creamy ‘Olympic White’. Strung with 45-105 medium gauge GHS Boomers (M3045) nickel rounds with plenty of life left in them. Stock open gear tuners and bridge. Pickups have been upgraded to the excellent Fender Custom Shop CS62. Box included though it’s a bit tatty. Wiring upgraded to USA specs, to a KiOgon loom (CTS pots, Switchcraft Jack, 0.047uf capacitor), with 1/4” chrome knobs to fit the pots. It was a solderless loom, but has since had the bridge wires fully soldered on. Please note I no longer have the stock pickups and wiring. Not that you would need them as it sounds great as is. Fantastic full range of tones compared to the stock pots. Bought from a fellow Basschatter Summer 2023, this is a semi reluctant sale as this is a very nice bass. I just marginally prefer my Player P bass and think I’ll always favour a maple board, so am moving this on. It’s a great colour combo, with 3-ply BWB plate on, and a 3-ply WBW plate will be included too. Both are aftermarket ones as far as I can tell but fit ok. There is no bag or case included in this sale, but I have a good quality box and packing from when I received it. Collection is possible from Southport. I work near St Helens, so could meet in that area or somewhere in the North West within reason. Price is including postage, so there will be a discount if collected. Otherwise I will post to a mainland UK address only, using Parcelforce 24 hour next day, fully protected delivery, with live tracking available on day of delivery. I should be able to post within 1 working day of payment being received, depending on my work shifts. I would rather post it Mon to Thurs, so it’s not sat in a depot all weekend. Feel free to check my Basschat feedback & PM me if interested or wanting more photos. It is set up with a nice low to medium action and the truss rod turns as it should. It is sold as seen, with no tools or inspection tag. Serial number shows 2017, I have run it through the Fender serial number check and it shows as registered March 2017 - see photos. MIM basses moved over to Pau Ferro boards not long after this, so here is your chance to get a nice dark rosewood board. I paid £425 for this here a few months ago, and have spent £145 on upgrades (pickups £100, wiring loom, pots & knobs £45). It’s in exactly the same condition I bought it in and hasn’t been played much. I think £520 is a fair price for a great condition P bass with top upgrades.

@Nice Guy Rich Sorry to hear that. It’s bad enough if this happens occasionally, but to happen repeatedly shows a total lack of respect for everyone else in the team. If this was a job, he’d have been sacked a long time ago, yet because he’s a volunteer thinks it’s ok to mess people about. As much as I guess you like to have a full band, I’d rather not have a drummer than one who takes the pee like this guy. Time for action surely?
