I have a friend who owns a bike shop and I laughed when I saw he had a couple of £8k bikes in. He put me straight, and told me that they're produced in such limited numbers they're actually quite easy to sell.

It's London + vintage + big name bass player = stupidly expensive. It's a huge amount of money for a reasonably scarce bass. I'm just not sure where this whole vintage thing is going, it's all getting a bit silly now, although there are some great guitars still out there for reasonable money. I picked up a 73 Strat for £1000, and an all original 74' Tele Custom for £1400 privately, both of which would cost double (at least) in a London shop.

I'm selling a 1972 Jazz Bass, maple neck, black blocks with original case, pickup covers and plenty of character. The bass is all original, but has had the pickups rewound by Bare Knuckle. This gives the bass a monumentally rich sound. The bass was previously sold by Andy Baxter, and you can see the listing here. http://andybaxterbas...ails.php?id=743 I'll be posting some pictures of the bass shortly so you can see it's in my possession, but Andy's pictures are much better than mine. I didn't buy the bass from Andy, but picked it up from the chap who had. The only difference between the bass then and now is that some of the paint on the horn has come off. This is typical of these 70s finishes not wearing particularly well. It's a shame, but it doesn't spoil this bass being an absolute beauty. I'm based in Bristol and you can come and see it, play it (and I'm sure fall in love with it) if you want to. I will send it, but it would be better and safer if it was picked up. The reason for sale is that my wife is pregnant and I need the money for baby stuff, DIY, house repairs and to go toward a new car. I wouldn't be selling otherwise. Bass is 4.2kg in weight. I definitely will give it a go. Few months yet till it's born yet, but I'm an inveterate planner. Hopefully by then I will be playing in tune!

That's a good idea, I never considered that. I assumed there was no way to tame the beast!

My wife is pregnant and were expecting in late September, which is exciting and frightening at the same time. The DB is in my music room, but I'm pretty sure the baby won't like it, so I'm looking at an electric upright. I like the look of the NS ones, but they're not much like a DB. I want something I can use that won't ruin my DB technique, but I can play regularly saving the proper DB playing for when my wife and the babber are out. Basically I don't know what I want, so I'm here asking you guys for some advice!

Still seems a bit high for me given the condition, but if someone has wanted one then it's not a bad price. Good for them! I managed to snare an incredible DB bargain on ebay this week, will be picking it up shortly and might post a bit of a diary about it.
Just on set-up work, I got my bass back from Edward Gaut in Bristol yesterday, after he re-shaped the bridge to lower the action (and to slightly raise the crown for easier bowing) and put a new soundpost in, in a somewhat different position. The work seems very neat and accurate, the action is just right and the sound has been really improved - stronger and more responsive, especially at the bottom end. I would definitely recommend him for this kind of thing.
Agreed. I live around the corner from Edward and he's sorted my DB out, fitted a new soundpost, strings and done some tidying up. Bass plays lovely now!

I spent about 2 seconds looking at the instrument and the rest looking at her. I appreciate that's an objectification of women, and I apologise for that it I couldn't help myself.

I went to a car boot sale and got a few Morrisey albums, Sketches of Spain by Miles, East Bay Grease by Tower of Power, Regulate by Nate Dog and Solid Air by John Martyn. All good, all different and all fascinating to listen too from a bass players perspective. Oh, and I got a great album by The Apples which is all DB based funk. -
These Framus basses are rare. The seller wants £1000, but I explained to him that it's not in great condition and doesn't have all the accessories that go with it, so that's somewhat ambitious. I reckon £500 or around there, which is a reasonable price. A good service, setup and new strings isn't going to be cheap. I might have a go at it, but I've been buying lots of things recently that I shouldn't.

I've got the complete Halfords set and it's great.

I can turn up with some vintage basses and guitars if interested? Also I know a DB luthier who I could potentially ask?

Here is my delightful Precision Affinity Bass which is finished in a delightful black. It's strung with round wound strings, plays OK and was made in Indonesia. Everything works perfectly well. The action is slightly high, although I think a decent turn of the truss rod and the use of an appropriately sized Allen Key will sort that out. It might sound stupid, but I am learning to play DB and I thought this having a high action might be a bit like James Jamerson. Well, I can play all those lines despite of, not because of this bass. The aesthetic is questionable. There are a couple of marks on the bass (pictured) and the bottom strap button has taken a whack. I've got the button and will include it of course. The neck is nice and straight. Few marks here and there, but nothing major. The previous owner tried to colour in the scratch plate with a black felt tip. Who knows why? It's a bit, well, rubbish. I have a spare black one but I think this might take some fettling to get on. I'll chuck it in with the package so you can always sell it on if you don't want it. I can't really say a huge amount about this guitar, only that it's in average condition and plays in a similar fashion. I bought this as my 'downstairs' bass. My music room is in the loft and some days I just get lazy. However, my wife has told me that I need to stop being a baby and walk upstairs, hence this is for sale. I've priced it at £85 delivered, but I don't know whether this is a reasonable amount to ask for or an absolute travesty. Fingers crossed it's the former. I will consider breaking this into bits if you want bits.
