Lots of great advice here, appreciate it all Not being able to try a BF in a shop is a bit of a pain although as I’m just a few miles away from Brighton I wonder if Alex might have a demo room I could visit. And of course I’m aware he does a 30 day trial scheme. I totally get the pragmatic and tonal upside to adding a MB 1x12 to my combo. It’s hard to argue against. But you know that feeling when you just want to try something different.......and it’s getting that “cut through the mix tone” at higher levels that I wonder if a BF or other high end cab could do for me I think I’m most likely to look out for a s/h MB cab as a quick fix and then spend time trying out gear for a longer term solution. As somebody said, it will always be gear that has value in the s/h market. @Cuzzie does that mean we can still be friends? Meantime I’ve some 20 year old Ashdown gear (the ABM 1x15 I mentioned originally and an ABM C110 combo) to shift to generate some funds and clear space for a new cab. Even 20 years ago I was sold on the idea of a combo plus extension cab!

I was afraid someone would say that! I guess the question, leaving aside money for the moment, is does a Supertwin sound that much better than a MB 1x12 x 2 rig. My sense is it is better but enough to warrant the upheaval and yes, extra spend.
-
I saw that. Counterintuitive. Extra bracing not needed in the combo because the amp provides it?

Can I pick your collective brains please. I currently have a MB CMD121P - love the portability and sound. Much of my playing is in any case done in a church where we run a silent stage so I go from my sansamp to the FOH and then do my own iem mix via a Behringer Powerplay so need for an amp. I also do some small gigs with no FOH support and the MB works well in this situation. I am now increasingly playing some much louder gigs, often with no or limited FOH and I find the MB on its own struggles - I think it has all the power but getting it out via the 1x12 just sounds like it is struggling. I usually take along my 20 year old Ashdown 1x15 to help but this is a big old cab, heavy and the MB doesn’t sit comfortably on top of it. My conumdrum therefore is do I keep the MB combo, buy a MB 1x12 cab and expect the two twelves to overcome the issues I hear with one twelve? Or sell the MB combo and get a Barefaced Super Twin (or similar) in the expectation that this 2x12 will sound materially better than two MB 1x12’s (plus of course will need a new amp head). Or get a powered cab and leave all all the eq’ing to the sansamp. Portability, low weight is high on the agenda as well. Thanks

Auctions and raffles.......We played a fund raiser a couple of weeks ago at a hospital social club. We were the last of four acts on but had to endure an interminable raffle before we could get going. Two bottles of the cheapest, nastiest wine were (sensibly) left unclaimed. So we started and it was a good gig, people had had a few drinks, lots of friends in the crowd, all good. Then, just as we went to start a run of the last three numbers and everyone is having a good time the raffle lady grabs the mic from our singer and announces an auction for the unclaimed bottles of wine. We tried to get the mic back but she was off. The first bottle took an age to sell for a grand total of £4. All the energy went out of the room, people started chatting, some decided it was time to leave. I was ready to throttle her so when she offered up the second bottle I shouted “£20” thinking that will be a quick end to this nonsense and money well spent so that we can get back on with set. Nobody wanted to outbid me it seemed but just as she turned to me to take my money a voice from the back of the room piped up “21” and off we went again for another goodness knows how long. Argggg........

Great pic, thanks.

I bought a Shure GLX system s/h a few weeks back. Very impressed so far. Kit is well made, no difference that I can hear compared to a cable connection. Tuner works well. Not sure I could have justified the price of a new one but like you, even on a modest stage I like the freedom it brings.

Really helpful. Thanks. Do you have the lighter silks, I wonder if the A string is something different?
-
Hi These strings were fitted to my Flea Jazz when I bought it s/h. The previous owner thought they were Ernie Balls but couldn't be sure. They are flats, a lighter gauge than my usual 45 - 105s and you can see that the A looks like a different string with a darker blue silk although it feels the same as the others. They have the same colour silks at the tuner end. I really like them, not as "flat" as the Elites I have on another bass. Thoughts very welcome as to what they are. Cheers.

Markbass Compressore purchased from Andertons just over three years ago. Has lived on my board ever since so has Velcro on the base. Markbass PSU inc. Perfect working order and an outstanding compressor, just check www.ovnilab.com. Located just near Brighton but can post. Would really like to move this on so make me an offer if at all interested.

Enjoyed saying hi to the team on the Basschat stand yesterday and I will try not to lurk as much in the future. As to the show, the exhibition was a bit underwhelming - as has already been said there was an absence of some big names and it surprises me that Promenade Music and Bass Direct can attend but more local retailers like The Bass Gallery and even GAK don’t - no doubt there are cost and logistical issues I don’t understand. Bobby Vega was great, more funk in his little finger than I have in my entire body, and the Yolanda Charles main stage set was superb with Guthrie Govan as well. Enjoyed hearing Steve Lawson’s throughts on improv - a pleasant contrast to the mad slapping happening on some of the stands. The luthier talks were difficult to engage with as they were right next to the (overpriced) cafe. Wish I could have stayed on to hear Guy Pratt and can’t get back to today either.

Same thing happened years ago on the same instrument to me. Needed a screwdriver to get to the battery - not easy on a stage. Always have a spare bass with me, just in case.

I have a Status Charger, bolt on headless and cannot imagine a more versatile and thoroughly professional instrument. There are no dead spots on the neck, it is beautifully balanced and has a modern, focused sound that really cuts through. And towards the bottom of the E string it is just growls! I am currently waiting on a Sei bass to sell and then plan to chat to Mr Green about a new one, possibly a Series 3.

SE Bass Bash 2017 - with Steve Lawson and Davey Rimmer

I'm a lurker here and only just spotted this event. Really disappointed that I cannot make it as looks a great programme. Enjoy and hope to join you next year! -
Another vote for OnSong. Use with chord charts when required or, a gig I did recently, just created a few notes, added as a PDF and had a mic stand with the iPad positioned just off the stage so that I could see if I needed to.

Your Bass doesn't 'suit' the band...
When I saw them at the NIA, he was playing a white Streamline. Shows how foolish it is to make assumptions on a sample of one...
Was that recently? He has recently switched to a white Charger (or a white Rhino according to the marketing blurb!) -
Just auditioned for, and joined, a band that originally formed in the late 1960s, playing my headless Sei Flamboyant 5. They didn't have a problem with it. Oh, and Rhino Edwards plays a Status Streamline with Quo.
Sorry to be a pedant but Rhino Edwards plays a Status Charger. -

Hi, just signed up. I've been playing for 40 years and these days mostly in our church but occasionally elsewhere as well. My current go to bass is a Status Charger and I am also fortunate enough to own a beautiful Sei Flamboyant plus a MIJ '62 RI Precision, a Precision Lyte, a CIJ Mustang and a Crafter ABG. I'm a fan of Markbass and use a CMD 112 combo and still have my original made in UK Ashdown rig bought from the much missed Bass Centre at Wapping in the late 90's. Look forward to being a part of this group.
