  1. Thanks I will give that a try or failing that I might try and enlarge the hole on the knobs and see if that works
  2. Hi PIctures below, apologies for the image quality, my camera phone is not the best , I got the new knobs form the below link https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08JYWN76M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  3. Thanks for the reply , will get some pics up in a moment and the link
  4. Haha , this is not helping my resolve, doesnt help that imo the Thunderbird is one of the best looking basses ever, if it looked liked the Warwick buzzard or something equally hideous it would be a lot easier, always thought that the KIngs of leon bass player looks like a total Badass in the video for Charmer where hes rocking a white Thunderbird
  5. Hi all Have brought some P bass pickup covers to replace some tatty looking ones on a bass, the original pickup covers are Seymour duncan , anyway I received them and the pickup ears are too big and not only are they too big to fit the pickguard they dont even fit the pickup route (pic below showing the size difference) can anyone reccomend some pickup covers with small ears? thank you
  6. Hi all Hoping someone can help, I have a bass that I had some work done on and when the work was done the tech fitted some volume knobs with a set screw as that is what they had at the time, the bass has split shaft pots and whilst the knobs work fine I realise that really it should have push on volume knobs. Anyhow I ordered some on Amazon blissfully unaware that there is more than one type of push on knobs and they dont fit they just wont go on and I think maybe the inside diamter is too small, description on Amazon said they are 6mm inside diameter, anyhow I googled to try and find the information to try and order the right set and after reading about course spline and fine spline volume knobs I am even more confused and whilst I found out that course spline have 18 splines and fine spline have 24 splines I am longsighted so trying to count the splines on a pot is nigh on impossible, can anyone help me with what knobs I need to get , thank you
  7. Thanks for the replies, looks like I have bad gas for a Thunderbird, just need to decide whether to move my Mezzo on to help fund one, I could probably do with having fewer basses so I think I will go ahead with it
  8. Brought an Ibanez Mezzo bass during lockdown and modded it a fair bit (Seymour Duncan SPB-2 and series/parallel switch for the P pickup and gone fully passive), love that bass however.... Today I went to the local music store to get some strings, whilst I was there I thought I would try some basses so I asked if I could play some of the Thunderbird basses. First bass I tried was an Ltd Thunderbird, plugged it in started playing and tonally I was floored, it was like the tone I hear in my head, unlike my P/J basses both pickups on full sounded fat and punchy and full rather than the tone getting thinner, everything that irks me about P/J basses was completely absent. Plugged in the 2nd Thunderbird bass and same thing. I brought the strings I went there for and walked out stunned and as much as I love the Mezzo bass I walked out feeling regret that when I brought my last bass I brought a P/J and not an Epiphone Thunderbird instead Anyone has a similar experience?
  9. I am curious about this type of pickup, want to know what they are typically like in terms of tone, output, DC resistance etc. Have seen a Roswell Filtertron and is a nice price but I saw it is only wound to 4k dcr but I did notice it has 2 rows of pole pieces so I was thinking maybe it was wound to a low resistance for brightness and then the output was boosted with the 2 rows of pole pieces? If so it could be an interesting tone Anyone use a bass with Filtertrons?
  10. Thanks for the replies, I think I will go used, amp is not required right this moment but is something I will need in the next 2-3 months so hopefully this will give me time to put some decent moment away
  11. If I could keep within the sub £400 range that would be great, from that I have seen so far I am thinking maybe used might be the way to go
  12. About 6 months or so ago thinking that gigging would not be an option for a while I ended getting rid of my Fender rumble, 6 months or so later I am in 2 bands with one of them looking like we may be gigging soon. Money is tight at the moment so am after finding out what is relatively inexpensive and capable of doing small to medium size pub gigs, thank you
  13. Ok found the answer after a bit of googling: Strings are the same as they were before... They changed the formula they used to calculate tension and it changed the numbers slightly. String formula had not changed.
  14. Hi Wanting to give Prosteels a 2nd chance now that I have a bass that has a pretty mid heavy pickup I got a set a couple weeks ago. Before I got them I looked up the tension information and got the 105-45 set as I wanted to go a smidge lighter tension than the Rotos I had on and these seemed to be very, very slightly lighter, looking them up online I found that they would be around 170ibs ish tension wise anyway the strings arrived and looking at the info on the back they are a good 10ibs lighter than stated by Daddario online so just wondered if anyone would know why, just want to know for the next time I order these, thanks
  15. That is true but it is a lot further forward with comparison to my other short and medium scale basses, would be interested to find out with scale length accounted for how it compares in terms of placement to a long scale jazz but tbh im too lazy to do the maths
  16. I think the bridge pickup on my Ibanez Mezzo bass might be in 60s spacing, granted it's a pj not a jazz bass but still thought it was interesting
  17. If you don't like Disintegration then the Cure is not for you, by far their best album
  18. I agree with this, I'm sure to my bandmates I could turn up with my P bass or I could turn up with my Hofner or I could turn up with a bass uke and as long as my band mates can hear the bass they don't care and probably don't hear the difference, to them it just sounds like a bass but to me I sound better when I use a certain bass and my sounding better makes me enjoy playing more
  19. I have a series/parallel switch (which is what the S1 is) on a P bass and imo the secret is to use it with a hot pickup, I use it with a Duncan SPB-2 which has a DC resistance of 22k and the parallel option actually sounds pretty good
  20. For absolutely ages I intensely disliked Prosteels for there mid scoop, just recently thought I would give them another shot as I have a bass that is very mid heavy and despite my past impressions they sound pretty good on that bass. There nickel strings are just decent, nothing wrong with them but just ok rather than great In short they make decent strings but they all (apart from the Nyxl line) have a bit of a scoop in the mids so they may not be great on a mid shy bass but on a bass with lots of mids they may be a great match
  21. Hi all My modest collection of basses consists of short and medium scale basses, I have always used long scale strings and cut them down as although the selection of medium scale strings is better than it has been in the past it is still somewhat lacking and often in really funky gauges (Rotosound medium scale for example is 90,75,50,40), I know a lot of people will be thinking "just but the right scale strings" but I can never find the right scale strings in the gauges and the brand that I like I have never encountered any issues using long scale strings but I know that theoretically it is not good to have the speaking length of the string wrapped around the tuner and it probably doesn't help the lifespan of the string. I have a couple of strap pins in my toolbox and was thinking of sliding one or two of these onto the string so that the taper of the string is the only part of the string wrapped around the tuning post. My only reservation in doing this is that I don't know if it might be bad for the bass since the tension that was held at the ball end will now be transferred to a larger area due to the strap pin (physics is not my strong point) , is this a bad idea?
  22. The trick is to put them in a container full of boiling water to soak for 10 mins or so, NO boiling on the stove, tried that before and the strings didn't really sound much better and died very quickly afterwards, I soak them in a (clean) icecream tub full of boiling water and they sound much better afterwards.
  23. Lol, 2 votes for the gold, it has grown on me to be honest, the gold spray painted one I have at the moment looks good but I think I will have one custom made now that I know it looks good That being said I really like the colour of this pickguard
