See http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=30559 for the results... Cheers, Jake M

Right then, here are the top ten results of the original thread found here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=30285 I took only your first three votes if you listed more than that. I may or may not have made the odd mistake. 01) James Jamerson - 20 votes 02) John Entwistle - 17 votes 03) Bernard Edwards - 9 votes 04) Jaco Pastorius - 8 votes 05) Geddy Lee, Marcus Miller, Stuart Zender - joint 7 votes 06) Flea - 6 votes 07) Aston Barrett, Jean-Jacques Burnel, Stanley Clarke, Les Claypool, Duck Dunn, Bruce Foxton, Mark King, Lemmy, Pino Palladino, Timmy C - joint 5 votes 08) Peter Hook, Paul McCartney, Paul Simonon, Norman Watt-Roy - joint 4 votes 09) Bootsy Collins, John Deacon, Leigh Gorman, Mick Karn, Victor Wooten - joint 3 votes 10) Jeff Ament, Jack Bruce, Simon Gallup, Steve Harris, John Paul Jones, Colin Moulding, Mani, Bruce Thomas - joint 2 votes Lots of ties unfortunately, so if we could get a tie-breaker vote on the guys at #07 we'd have the real list, ie Geddy Lee, Marcus Miller and Stuart Zender would be joint tied at #05, Flea would then move to #08, and we just need to fill #09 and #10 with either Aston Barrett, Jean-Jacques Burnel, Stanley Clarke, Les Claypool, Duck Dunn, Bruce Foxton, Lemmy, Pino Palladino. A few casting votes for the above would be appreciated, thanks. Cheers, Jake M

TIME GENTLEMEN PLEASE! It looks like we're just about done. Any votes posted from this point on won't be counted. I'll post the top ten results in a separate thread later. Cheers, Jake M

Who are your all time top three players? I know this is a pretty obvious topic, and i'm sure it's been done before, but there's a wide range of musical styles represented on this forum and i'm genuinely interested to know who people really rate. If i get enough replies to this thread i'll work out a top ten chart. Please also mention the relevant band name. Like i said, we're all into different stuff here, and not everbody will recognise the name of a player if it's not their thing. Mine: 1) Jean-Jacques Burnel - The Stranglers 2) John Entwistle - The Who 3) Lemmy - Motorhead Cheers, Jake M
I can't comment but the Questions and Answers is quite a read.
I didn't even notice. Classic! Everybody, you HAVE to read the Q&A for the 1959 listing.

Look at these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1953-Fender-Precisio...id=p3286.c0.m14 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Original-Vintage-195...id=p3286.c0.m14
if your looking for around the 650 - 850 mark i'd swap my trace elliot v6 for this
Thanks for that, but as i said, 650-850 is less than i thought. It's considerably less than the last one i saw selling on eBay went for, so i reckon i'll be hanging on to it for the time being, see how much the one next fetches... Cheers, Jake M

I'm sure this topic comes up from time to time, but which musical instrument insurer do we recommended? Never bothered before, but i just realised my gear's worth a small fortune. I'm just looking to insure within the home really, not likely to have all my stuff together in one place anywhere else. Anyone had good or bad experiences trying to make a claim? Cheers, Jake M
Hi jake, how much do you hope it is worth?
Well that's just it, i've got absolutely no idea. I was hoping somebody could tell me. The value of a vintage guitar, amp or whatever can vary over time as we all know, depending on its currently perceived "prestige" factor IMO. Its something i don't agree with as it goes, paying an arm and a leg for a thing just because it's old and therefore it must be "better". The Gibson Les Paul is surely the best example. I own one myself, circa 2001. It's around seven years old, but i saw a couple of listings on eBay recently trying to sell for more than new. The guitars looked unplayed, obviously bought as an investment to sell on a few years down the line. What a scam. They're mass produced and there are literally millions in circulation. I thought the idea of "vintage" was that a thing was old, rare and made with superior craftsmanship. Anyway, having said that, i'm sure the last old Hiwatt i saw on eBay went for around two grand, sold in the USA. I couldn't swear to it, it was a while ago now. Thanks Jebo, i must admit £650-£850 is less than i thought. If that's the case i reckon i'll be hanging on to it. Any advice on how to date it? I'll have a look for that label inside. Cheers, Jake M
Hi, Has anyone out there owned or tried or even see a Tony Franklin fretted precision? Anyone know a shop in the midlands that has one? I've just about decided on getting a new American Standard but I'm wondering if I should try to get hands on a TF. I know that a single pup precision is good enough for some great players and it's the sound I want, plus it's a really comfortable bass to hold and play, it's simple, strong, passive, no batteries. But will I start geting twitchy if I haven't got another tone option on the bass? When might I need that extra pup? Is there any reason, other than the extra pup, to get the TF? Cheers
Here's one: http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~F...ite~ID~7616.asp
The Award-Session JD10 is a good preamp/DI box - very "old fashioned" in that it uses circuit design to get the sound rather than clever digi stuff. Pretty much simulates a "fender" pre-amp (just like the Alembic preamps, but no valves...runs on a battery). Worth thinking about BB
I'm liking the look of this one, cheers. :-) I'm hoping to get close to the classic overdriven Marshall/Hiwatt sound. I've seen a few mentions of the EBS MicroBass II on the board. Anyone care to comment?

First up, this is just a feeler. I'm not intending to sell this amplifier at this time. I can't find another for sale on eBay or anywhere else at the moment, so i'm wondering what its potentially worth. I guess if it turns out to be worth "enough" i'd consider parting with it, but "enough" would have to be sufficient to buy a sh*t-load of other stuff. :-) Anyway, we're talking about a vintage Hiwatt Custom 100. Sorry i can't be exact about the year of manufacture, because the serial number plate on the back has always been missing. I bought it second hand in 1984. I realise the precise age is no small detail, because the actual year of manufacture could be anywhere between 1968 - 1984. What i can say however, is that it originally had an old style round mains lead input, which has since been replaced with the standard kettle lead type. The back of the amp is as shown in this pic, dated 1974: http://members.tripod.com/~dcsbulldog/index-79.html If anyone knows of any telling signs to suss out its age some other way, please tell. For the purposes of a feeler, just assume its a mid 70's model. Its in excellent condition and good working order. Hardly a mark on it because i had a custom flight case made which its stayed in at all times, even on stage. It hasn't been used now in many years, so it does have a bit of a dust crackle. The valves were relatively new when it was last used. Like i said, i'm just looking to get some feedback at this stage. Cheers, Jake M
yes, it should just be the VTbass, however it does sound alot better comming out of an amp/speaker, and im not entirely trusting of the TonePort for recording clean - its designed to be used with the models provided, but i tried to get a flat response and thats the best i could get. heres a few (better) clips i found that show more of what the VTbass is about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xr8kdWpB3U4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ot6jQTYdSCY
Sounds good. I'm quite impressed by the range of different sounds, and it doesn't sound too synthetic. Its a bit dry as it is, so i'd need to use other effects to liven it up. The distortion doesn't have the clarity of loud valve overdrive, but i'm not expecting miracles from a relatively inexpensive stomp box. :-) All in all, its a definite maybe. Thanks again for doing that for me mate. :-) I'm pretty sure i'm going to need to go for a lead amp simulator with onboard effects to get the sound i'm used to. I need the responsiveness of a cranked up valve sound. As i said, i already own a Behringer V-Amp, and i can get some damn fine sounds out of it at home through a mixer or headphones, but i was seriously disappointed when i tried it out as a pre-amp in the rehearsal room. Anyone got an opinion on the Pod XT Pro, either lead or bass version, as compared to the Behringer V-Amp? Cheers, Jake M
well heres a clip: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6961826 didnt come out quite how i expected, im not really sure if its what you're looking for, the clip was like 20mins, but i edited it down to 5, got rid of most of the 'too-distorted' tones, im playing with my Yamaha Attitude Special with just the p-bass pickup (which is a DiMarzio that i got off ebay), also i switch between playing with a Pick and playing with fingers (I prefer fingers, but i wasnt sure about you and thought you might like a pick, so theres more pick-style stuff) I was recording through my Line6 TonePort GX on the 'no-amp' model, but i dont actually know how realistic it is for me to use the line6 stuff at all, however you can be the judge, the first second or two of the clip is just clean p-bass pickup, the tone is all the way up (its always up, theres no tone control). Hope this helps ps - if you've got a spare £20-£30 pick up the behringer GTI21 (i think thats what its called) apparently the Bass one is very similar sonically to the Sansamp Bassdriver, so i assume the guitar one is similar to the GT2 oh yeah sorry for the sloppy playing, it was like 2.30 in the morning and i was tired
Nice one, thanks for going to all the trouble. I'll have a listen and post a proper reply later. Just to clarify, this is the VT Bass i'm hearing, and not the Line 6 Toneport? Cheers, Jake M
I know you said you go through Marshall and HiWatt heads usually, but if you can give me an example of your ideal tone, i dont mind mocking up a VTbass clip, just so you can make a better decision if its not for you, the VTbass will do so much its almost unfair to call it just an Ampeg modeller. I reckon you can get a good hi-gain guitar amp tone, but with enough lowend to make any bass player happy.
That would be great. Thanks for the help, much appreciated. :-) The sound i (try to) get thru a real amp would be JJ Burnel circa Black & White, John Entwistle, Lemmy. Clear, clean overdive rather that actual distortion. I play either a Fender Precision or a Rickenbacker. Hope that's enough to go on. Cheers, Jake M
Yup, It's now in the safe hands of Essential Tension and his G&L L2500 should hopefully be with me tomorrow am. Think you made the right decision between the $$ and the P BTW.
Me too. I think its the only one i've ever played with a standard Fender pickup, and it sounds GREAT! :-)
I haven't heard from anyone using the other guitar oriented pedals in the character series on bass, but there's a good chance you'll lose some of your low frequencies. The DI is used for sending a balanced signal (which gives you better signal transmission and less noise ) to the PA when playing live, for practice I just plug the VT straight into a combo amp, bypassing the on-board pre by plugging into the fx return socket.
Now i see what you're using the DI for. Thought you meant you used it to plug straight into an amp. I'm pretty sure i'd lose some bottom end too, but i've been doing that for years playing through lead amps anyway. :-) Just can't get the grunt i need out of bass amps, at least not the ones i've tried.
I use a Tech 21 VT Bass and a Radial JDI, plugging into the fx loop return socket on whatever crappy amp I happen to be using. Highly recommended! You're best off importing one from the US, but they can be hard to find as they're new and they can't keep up with demand! Also check out the Aguilar Tone Hammer and EBS Micro Bass.
Cheers mate. I found it here: http://www.dv247.com/invt/49207/product.ht...c1181_a_7c49207 I reckon i might be better off with the british guitar amp modeler though, because i use Hiwatt/Marshall lead amps to get my sound. So why do you use the DI instead of going straight in?
