The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!

Speaking of Bass Direct, this Elrick caught my eye, but not my wallet, fortunately. https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Elrick_Gold_4_30".html -
Awfully brilliant or brilliantly awful album title puns.

@Lowhead Congrats on your new acquisition, let the fun begin! The thing I seemed to spend a lot of time getting right was the height of the thing. Because of it being fixed on the tripod, there’s none of the pulling it towards you and cosying up to it like you would do with a DB (I tried it ‘floating’ for a bit, but have gone back to fixed) However, once I got it right for me (I suspect everyone will be different in this respect), it became easier to play and my intonation improved. Altering my fingering from where I would play mid neck on an EB, to more towards the nut on the WAV and incorporating more open strings has been another step forward. I was initially a bit disappointed with my progress, but I’m a lot happier now and think that the WAV (or at least the move to upright) is a keeper. I tend to play with the switch in the up position (which I believe is primarily for arco), having the tone control halfway and scooping the low mids on my amp. This gives me the sound I’m looking for and sounds more DB than fretless EB to my ears and produces a nice thump on the note.

Finally watched the OP video and I’m left wondering why someone as relatively little known as JG would even warrant a signature bass. I can only imagine that Fodera bigged him up because of the differences he had installed in his personal instrument. The same goes for Matt Garrison, hardly a household name, even amongst the bass community, and not particularly high profile IMO, but suddenly there’s a signature instrument. If Janek is to be believed, Garrison is a bit of a diva (I wonder if Anthony Jackson threw a hissy when either of these 2 ‘signature’ basses were produced? I’m guessing no, as AJ is high profile in our world and too busy working), but given that Fodera lavished both protagonists with ‘signature’ basses, I guess it’s easy to start having an over inflated opinion of oneself. I have 2 custom built Maruszczyks made to my specs, they must be my ‘signature’ models and perhaps I should approach Adrian about making them available at a cheaper price point for my acolytes? Oh yeah, I’m a nobody, as you were. As to the, “I wish I could pick up the phone and apologise,” comment, man alive! Come on, you’ve sat there, recorded, edited and generated a long video, you could’ve picked up the phone during the upload. Passive/aggressive perhaps? Finally, with regard to @ped’s editing comment, it irritates me too and seems all the rage in an effort, I guess, to be edgy. Other folk I follow occasionally have these jumps, but it’s plainly where they’ve ‘dropped in’ due to an error/retake, either that or they’re not very good at the edgy style.

A decision seems to have been reached, well done, that man. Cue desperate scouring of every musical instrument outlet for the right DB, situated within reasonable reach of the North East. I was like that for ages, nothing. Moved to the other end of the country and suddenly suitable instruments became available close to my old home. The universe hates my bass dreams.

Hatters gonna Hat - Show us your favorite gigging hat(s)!

There are other shots where that very fine guitar player and very close friend looks even more like MK. He can also play exactly like MK when he wants too. However, it’s his own style that never fails to blow me away, a cross between Alan Murphy, Andy Powell, Johnny Marr and Knopfler. Lovely fella too who has to be told to turn up, a rare beast indeed. I would like to add that everyone in that band (not including myself here for fear of seeming a braggart) were fantastic musicians and I learnt masses during my tenure with them. -

Hatters gonna Hat - Show us your favorite gigging hat(s)!

Having been follicly challenged for many years (my dad was bald as were both my granddads, I was always on a hiding to nothing with regard to my bicep covering) and own many, many hats, not least because I need to protect it from UV having had an UV induced growth. However, other than for a photoshoot and maybe an early gig or two with that band, I go sans titfer. Back when I had hair I would sport a bandana to soak up the sweat, but I use a towel these days, if required. Nonetheless, this thread calls for a hat, so a hat you shall have…
