The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
ezbass replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
It’s growing on me, but I know exactly where you guys are coming from. The American Performer could benefit from a rounder bridge pickup, to make it easier on the eye too IMO, maybe a ‘51 P style one? -

Just had a meet up with the guitarist of a new band for me. He came to Ez Towers and he took one look at my Mustang and said, “Yes!” We’re going to get on fine. 😁 -
Starting to gel with the beast at last. It would’ve happened sooner I think, but I’ve also just landed a position with a new band and have been woodshedding their set list.

I shouldn’t be looking at the for sale section because Santa came early to chez Ez.

Whenever I’ve had direct dealings with Hipshot, they’ve always been very helpful, so this comes as no surprise. I look forward to seeing the installation on the SG.

I once tried out a Sadowsky Metro Express (pre Warwick) in GG, Camden. I was running through some Geddy lines, when I heard one of the staff accompanying me on guitar.

Works for Pino too.

Taking, or asking to use (not always allowed) a strap is something I learnt to do. Hopefully, there is also a selection of amps you can choose from in store and you’ll know which one is close to your own rig tonally, which you should know how it sounds like soloed.

I’ve just realised that all of my current basses have been bought sight unseen and I’ve surprised myself at this realisation. Previous to these, I’m pretty sure all my basses were shop bought.

Or a baboon in your bassoon.

This for sure. Some folk do things better/faster/whatever. We can't all be Bernard Edwards, Usain Bolt, Andres Segovia, Stephen Hawking, whoever, despite whatever nonsense is talked about 10,000 hours.

Back to the OP, are you some sort of anarchist? 🤣 It's often very difficult to sing and play bass, because of the counter rhythms between the two (Mark King never fails to amaze me the way he can do it). I used to sing lead on Bowie's China Girl and it took lots and lots of playing and singing at home (and getting it woefully wrong) to finally get that independence between the two. Not sure I can still do it, as I've not needed to play and sing it for a few years.

The thumb always behind the neck, in both bass and guitar playing, comes from the classical technique, where this was required to exert enough, precise power to make the note sound cleanly (I'm currently learning double bass and I can see the logic in this). The modern, solid instrument can almost be viewed as something totally different and, given that they're not even 100 years old (at least as a mass produced item), techniques are still evolving. If it gets the job done and doesn't hinder progression, then any technique is valid. I will concede that 'correct' (whatever that means) is a good starting place, but if it stifles creativity or is a hinderance, because of physical impairment, then it should not be regarded as the only right and proper way. I'm recently been watching Polyphia videos with Tim Henson and Scottie LePage on guitar and young Mr Henson is classically trained, but what he and LePage are doing is amazing and certainly unconstrained by classical convention. And, to quote Forest Gump, that is all I have to say about that.

If a bass hasn't been used for some time and is just gathering dust, then it's definitely on the potential sale list. I have 2 custom built basses that are certainly in danger of being up for sale next year and another boutique one that could go the same way. Whatever happens, I'm now officially at space capacity, with a mix of 10 guitars and basses.
-
It’s worth remembering that Bernard often employed his ‘chucking’ technique, where he played with his thumb and index finger held together, as if he were holding a pick.

That'll be the newer Waza Craft reissue/version.

Yep, this, all day and a low action.

A Squier Bass VI and have some fettling done to take a B-C set? Might not be possible with the trem and tuners, however. Edit: Looking at the Brice, my suggestion probably isn’t the type of thing you’re looking for.

Good call, @Rich. A quick images search seems to indicate it’s a Turner Renaissance.

I think that the burgundy mist is the best colour of these. I also like the black, but fingerprint magnet and all that. -

Those BiSonics certainly receive a lot of love.
