Phwoar! Those P basses! 😍
-
I can’t remember who it was, but I remember reading that a top rock band did this in order to get their stamina up to be able to deliver a 3 hour performance. Might’ve been Zeppelin.

The excitement mounts and it’s not even my bass! -
No Self Control - Peter Gabriel

This is important, you’re rehearsing for a gig, the same mindset needs to be used for both, otherwise it is a waste and lacking in respect for your band colleagues too.

I'm aware... ... and I'm OK with it .

When I first started out, back in the mists of time, rehearsals were also/mainly about learning your craft, with not a lot done as homework, by anyone (we were kids after all). Once I was older, at a good standard and playing with good bands, rehearsals were mainly there to try new songs that we would have learnt at home to a certain arrangement and seeing how that proposed arrangement worked in the flesh (obviously for any new band members, this would mean a complete run through of the set). They were also used to sharpen vocal arrangements. However, we would also revisit older tunes as a warm up or if someone wanted to try something different in a particular tune or, as you say, iron out an error that may have shown up previously. "It's just the very late gigs and packing away are the downside (but nescessary evil)." Yeah, that very much for me too. Plus the waiting around beforehand, even at home used to get to me, it seemed like dead time. I'd rather an afternoon gig, where you could get up, get ready, get out, gig, maybe socialise a bit after (rather than in a dark car park after a normal gig), come home and relax at a respectable time. For this reason, I always liked rehearsing (we tended to do Sunday afternoons), it was relaxed, easy going and also a great catch up with folk I liked. I miss those days as I'm currently bandless.

It's all the way up and I call refret - a bad refret. It probably doesn't affect playability, but my guess is that it would always bug you and there doesn't appear to be any reduction in price to reflect the mauling this has had. When I first pulled frets out of a bass with just a screwdriver, needle nosed pliers and no heat applied (I didn't know any better back then), it didn't look as bad as that.

The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!

That colour scheme is really nicely understated; I like it. I for one would be interested in how this compares to the Wilcock MM. -
And hits the add to basket button.

Conversely, I really like DB and would love one (annoyingly there have been a bunch for sale that I could easily have gone to try before I moved north, but are now, literally, out of reach. The universe trying to tell me something, perhaps?), with Danny Thompson being one of my favourites, not just for his chops, but especially for his tone. Because of that, I didn't really enjoy the DB performance because I didn't like the tone, it was way too muffled and dead sounding for my tastes. Perhaps this was down to the sound guy (the Beeb have previous for poor bass mixes, in a multitude of settings after all), but as his open E sounded kind of OK, I'm guessing it's a personal choice. However, he won over more traditional lead instruments, which is a nice thing for the bass community (how you compare a DB performance to that of a piano is beyond me, but a win's a win).

I think the Kala has better definition than the Fender, so, unless it's an ergonomic thing, I haven't got a clue. Either way, what a great advert for shorter scale basses.

The black one looks a bit tasty. At £199, it could make for a good upgrade chassis.

I fitted 1/2" Hipshot Lightweight Short tuners to my SBMM shorty 'Ray. I still had to add a bit of tape to make them snug though. Great upgrade, super smooth, accurate action and despite not being a huge weight saving on paper, it made the whole bass feel much lighter.

Just looking again, the headstock looks like it has been photoshopped somewhat.

That bridge looks like the one they use on the SBMM Sub range.
