  1. Firstly, it’s the ergonomics. The Mustang feels bigger than the ‘Ray and despite the more limited upper access, this doesn’t seem to be a problem, in fact I find the ‘Ray a bit cramped up there, as my body gets in the way. The ‘Ray is a great instrument bit, by comparison, feels a little toy like compared to the JMJ, probably due in no small part to me being a slightly bigger bloke (6’) and I really like the JMJ’s slab body to rest my forearm on, whereas the ‘Ray is much slimmer and doesn’t work quite as well (it’s absolutely fine really, it’s just me but the Mustang feels right). Then there’s the tone, whilst at home there doesn’t appear to be an awful lot different tonal difference with the ‘Ray set to single coil mode, but live and at volume the Mustang has more fundamental and pronounced low end, that you could describe as vintage, which is perfect for my current band and gives me confidence because I can both hear and feel it. The ‘Ray wins the weight battle easily, being lighter and better balanced, has more tonal options and is better suited to more modern production styles. However, the tonal limitations of the JMJ make me work harder to achieve the required tones with the tone control and hand position and I like that aspect.

I told you they were addictive.
  3. Congo - Genesis
  4. Nothing Ever Happens - Del Amitri
  5. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with using headphones, I used to do this due to neighbour considerations. I used to use a Korg Pandora, which had the clever feature of removing bass from an input source to help playing along. I think that other similar devices have this option too.
  6. They got fed up writing about Phil, Holly and the whole Good Morning non news event.
  7. Jet - Paul McCartney & Wings
  8. Call Me - Blondie

If necessary? This is BC, you know the rules…
  10. Welcome to the shorty brigade, watch out, they’re addictive.
  11. Ridiculous! I saw Steven Wilson at The Royal Albert Hall, with a box seat for £45. Ticket pricing is all the over the map, without rhyme or reason.
  12. Doesn’t/didn’t Horace Panter use one with The Specials? T’birds do have the perception of being a rock bass and I can see why. However, if folk pigeonhole any instrument, they’re missing a trick (the story of Ozzy, with Randy Rhodes pitching up to the audition with a Les Paul springs to mind).
  13. In Repair - John Mayer
  14. Female of the Species - Space
  15. Rock Bottom - UFO
  16. Never had a sticky set of these, although I have had that experience with LaBella’s. However, they may now be coating them in something to negate the rust spotting issue they were having a while back.
  17. Hear Me Calling - Slade
  18. Just like Fender did back in ‘50s and ‘60s. That build is my current favourite P bass combo; loving it.
  19. I had one just like that, I often wonder whether I should’ve kept it.
  20. White Wine in the Sun - Tim Minchin
  21. That's the right logo, at last!
  22. @FinnDave I see that you've advertised for a reasonably priced Mustang/Bronco in the wanted section, why not give the Harley Benton MV-4MS (catchy name) a go for £199? https://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_mv_4msb_gotoh_bk.htm The lack of blend control/pickup selection is a bit of a nuisance, but a blend control replacing the volume control is a solution. I like the neck pickup so much, I just disconnected the J pickup altogether.
  23. All that matters. This is true, but there is lot more real estate in the body than a P. However, a chambered body or a mini J shape (Sadowsky for instance) will address this issue in short order. My Maruszczyk Elwood L (chambered, J type) comes in at under 3.3kg.
