    I have a Sterling, short scale ‘Ray and absolutely love it. It needed a little nut fettling on arrival and I replaced the functional, but slightly sloppy tuners, other than that, it’s my current go to bass, despite being the cheapest bass in my modest collection. I’d certainly buy another if something happened to it.

    Update: my ennui with fretless has continued, even to the point where I’m not keen when I hear it on the radio. Who am I and what has the body snatcher does with the original Ezbass? However, my GAS for a double bass or EUB has grown in direct proportion to my flagging fretless desire. Checked out some NS EUBs and dismissed them for sounding too fretless like. However, the Harley Benton, scroll topped EUB sounds more like a DB to me. Currently out of stock, but I will keep checking Thomann for when they come in (proper, affordable double basses are like rocking horse poop in my area).

    I see that price of new Sterling SS ‘Rays has gone up, they’re plainly popular and I understand why, I’ve fallen even more in love with mine recently.

    That’s quite an extensive crack, it looks like the finish hasn’t bonded to the undercoat properly. If you don’t mind the odd chip (mojo and all that), I’d be inclined to try and stabilise the finish, if possible, with cyanoacrylate glue. However, I do wonder if that entire finish would just lift off really easily, leaving a sealed, natural finish, that you could sand and buff?

    I dislike the majority of musicals with a passion. However, WSS is one of the very few exceptions. The recorded version with Kiri Te Kanawa and Jose Carreras is sublime (the documentary that went with it was great too). I’ve seen it at the theatre too, with a cast of no one famous, but those songs are so superb, it didn’t matter. America is always the highlight for me, fantastic melody and clever lyrics. Other musicals that get a pass are: Grease (saw this at the theatre and it was lot more risqué than the film); Sound of Music; the latest Star is Born (or is that just a film with songs?) and the one opera that doesn’t send me running from the room - Carmen.

    My JMJ slopes away on the E string but the D & G are pretty level. Whatever produces a fairly even output is the name of the game for me.

    Love the look of the DC in both the bass and guitar versions. Good enough for Jimmy Page, good enough for me (if I had one that is). Very cool stacked pots. Hardboard, that well documented tonew… er… composite.

    Well, the shorty ‘Ray is pretty much a Sterling without the preamp. It has the series/single/parallel selector, small body and a 38mm nut with.

    Lightly damp micro fibre cloth, followed by a dry one is the safest route I’d have thought.

    A number of those ‘59 Les Pauls are refinished Gold Tops, still possibly a ‘59, just not an original ‘burst.

    Bitten by the Mustang/short scale bug eh? It’s a slippery slope but a wonderfully comfortable one.

    With the likes of Gibson and Fender reissuing guitars and basses from ‘the golden era’ and people buying those in big numbers, the desire for the ‘real thing’ will always be there. Scarcity breeds value and desire it seems.
