  1. That was an absolutely stellar band. Just for my taste, I’d like to have heard more of the neck pickup in Jaco’s tone (I note that he’s playing a fretted here), as they all seem to be occupying much the same tonal space.
  2. Fender did a Mustang with a Wide Range fitted. That said, the right Mustang split coil might be a better way forward. The custom Seymour Duncan in the JMJ can go from roaring P Bass to very dubby. I understand that the Curtis Novak is even more old school.
  3. You’re welcome. It’s what BC is probably best at. It’s either help out a fellow player, or actually play some bass .
  4. I’ve been giving this some thought, whilst listening to a live album of a band with only one guitar player and doing the ironing (a mindless task that allows me to think of other things). What is missing when the rhythm guitar drops out and the lead playing begins? Most times, it’s an upper midrange tone, with some drive. Therefore, having a tone with those components and perhaps playing more (8th notes instead of quarter, 16th instead of 8ths, etc), should fill that sonic space. Aim for a Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, etc tone and you shouldn’t be too far off the mark. If you’re already playing with some drive, just add some more at the appropriate juncture, whilst adding more upper midrange (it’ll sound awful soloed, but should work in a band situation).
  5. Sorry, missed that. I’d maybe contact Thomann just to confirm that they are the Beatle Bass length strings, although I’m pretty sure it’s the text that’s wrong, it would not be the first time that their own, added descriptions are off (lots of cut & paste methinks). Just Order them and if they’re the wrong length, send them back. This is a section from the Thomann page for the HB Beatle Bass recommendations, albeit a different gauge…
  6. I think the text added by Thomann is incorrect there, as the packaging says for Beatle Bass. I’d just buy them from Bass Direct to avoid any confusion, same price IIRC.
  7. Because GAS and the irrationality that goes with it. ‘Twas ever thus, sadly.
  8. Don’t be put off by the gauge on those LaBellas. I normally use 45-100, but my 35” Rob Allen is fitted with the 760n set and they feel no tighter. I have a set of 750n on another bass and they feel a bit too thin; weird.
  9. I don’t think I’ve ever been more happy to be corrected. Cheers! 🙏
  10. Built for the job: https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/product-category/strings/?_string_scale_length=hofner-beatle-bass
  11. I do relief by feel/eye. I do a tap test holding down the E string at the 1st and 15th fret. I know what I’m listening for, for what I want. I’ll also test to see if I’ve overdone it by play an open A and pulling back on the headstock slightly and waiting for the fret buzz. Again, a feel thing. Not very scientific, but it works for me.
  12. Yes, normally, these days. The backup stays in the gig bag. In my last band I used 2 basses for different songs, so had a backup by default, rather than by design.
  13. Alison Gross - Steeleye Span
  14. Last year has affected me badly it seems. I’ve been looking at stuff, but keep rationalising the GAS away. It’s not natural I tell you!
  15. The good Lady Ez, once again, got me with something similar. I was trying out a guitar in the basement of Chandlers in Kew, she wasn’t interested and went for a walk. She came back and met up with me in the shop. She said, “I knew it was you playing,” she could plainly hear me in the basement and I was obviously playing Eric Johnson’s SRV as a test piece, unfortunately for her, she’d had to put up with me learning it for weeks. Oh well, at least it wasn’t Stairway .
  16. On Horseback - Mike Oldfield
  17. Ooh, that stings. Back when I just played guitar, my nephew, who I had shown some stuff to, when he first started out, picked up one of my guitars for a noodle. Lady Ez said something similar to the above to me. I felt very deflated (I knew it to be true, but you don’t want it pointed out ).
  18. The ‘fairy dust’ pedal. I’ve had mine for years and it just adds a certain something to a bass, passive J type basses in particular, that you didn’t know was missing originally. An always on pedal for me. GLWTS, great price.
  19. Too Old To Rock & Roll Too Young To Die - Tull
  20. Urine My Heart - Ros Stewart
  21. They are a class act at Origin Effects, both products and customer service.
