I'm ordering a Sei bass... I need your expertise!
ezbass replied to joe_geezer's topic in Bass Guitars
You will have a list of things that you know that you like: nut width, neck profile, scale length, body size/weight, tuner arrangement (4 in line, 3 over 1, 2 + 2), pickup selection and general tone. Once these are sorted, it’ll be Martin and John’s expertise that’ll help you come to a final design and configuration. I’ve not had a Sei built, but I’ve had custom basses and guitars made before and the ‘mistakes’ I made were falling for aesthetics over ergonomics. Yes, you’ve got to want to like the look of it, to want to pick it up and play it, but it has to work as a physical tool first. Martin and John are serious people and they want a good product out there with a satisfied customer, if you come in with a similar attitude, it’ll be golden. -
The osteopaths and chiropractors in your area must love you.

Ah ha! I thought I recognised it from the English Rock Ensemble (I think that was the name).

Yes, made by Wal.

I josh you not. Not my actual bass but the right colour nonetheless... -
Too much of this satisfied talk will have this thread locked and erased.

A film I have a fair amount of affection for.

A case of posting without reading. In my defence, I was distracted by the picture. Ooh, look! A bee.

An additional one for me would be my very first bass, a Yamaha BB300 in poop brown. A heavy weight beast, that would rule it out for my current requirements, but it’d be nice just for nostalgia’s sake. -
I have TGS just after acquiring anything new. The times that I’ve said, “Right, that’s me done,” makes me think that part of my brain likes a joke, but the rest of my cerebellum isn’t in on it.

I had a very similar experience yesterday, where I played all of my basses. What was extremely satisfying was playing my EUB through my recently acquired Behringer graphic EQ pedal, with a smiley face curve, resembling the Dr Feelgood logo. No more messing about with my amp’s, mainly flat, EQ and then having to reset it; now I’m good to go. Worry? No, not at all, GAS, coupled with curiosity, will return soon enough. BTW I’ve just noticed the somewhat forward position of the J pickup on your ‘Berg, that makes a lot of sense to me. Was that off the peg or custom?

A closer inspection seems to indicate that that is the case here.

My RB4 was deep red but not quite CAR. -

Roscoe Beck 4 and an old Stingray5. I’d get on better with the RB’s neck now and I probably only sold the SR5 because the guy I bought it from asked if I’d consider selling it back to him (I wasn’t really playing 5s at the time). Mostly, I’ve been moving forward with little looking back to previously owned basses. -
I recognise those pickguards from the FB Mustang group. I didn’t realise that you manufactured them yourself (or didn’t read properly). The 3rd and 4th ones are my particular favourites.

Harley Benton MV-4M Mustang-like bass. £198. Opinions?

I knew it was tucked away somewhere, I just couldn’t find it this time. I think I found it under ‘new’ last time. Why it isn’t also listed under ‘offset’ is a mystery. -

Doesn’t look like it on the Thomann site, the actual Harley Benton site, however, has no trace of them as far as I can see just now. That being said, they were never under the right/logical heading on that site and it might be undergoing a restructuring. If it does prove to be that they’ve discontinued them (although, a cease and desist order notwithstanding, why would they?), I’ll consider myself fortunate in having got in under the wire. -

Used the new bass in anger rehearsal last night. I can report that it was very much a success. The 60:40 neck:bridge or full on neck settings were perfect for everything in our set. Despite being the heaviest of all my basses (just), because the weight is predominantly in the body, balance on the strap was absolutely fine and comfortable. This has actually made my SS 'Ray somewhat surplus to requirement now and that may go in part ex for a P Bass .
