The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
ezbass replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
Having become wrapped up the recent Epiphone Newport release and furore, I completely forgot about the last SS that caused quite the stir (I am a bear of very little brain). However, following a desire for some tort on black action, not least because of a recent interview with Bruce Foxton in Guitarist, where he’s sporting a P in this combo and our own @Frank Blank’s recent Nordstrand purchase, I remembered the last SS that caused a stir, the HB Mustang-alike. Anyway, at £205 delivered, it was a no brainer and I pulled the trigger this am, before I could talk my self out of it. Also ordered a blend pot to replace the volume so I can get some in between action. Should arrive Thursday/Friday and will hopefully not look too different from this… -
Nice upgrades, both sonically and aesthetically.

Well that didn't last long. Incoming package from Thomann with all sorts of bits and pieces.

I have 2 Elwoods, both passive and I can thoroughly recommend putting them through a Sadowsky preamp pedal (I have a SBP2) it really sprinkles a certain ’fairy dust’ over the tone that’s hard to describe, it’s just more.

Haven't played my Elwood custom, other than for a quick noodle, for ages, having been 'Mr Short Scale' for the last 2 years. However, rather than use my Mustang for practising for an upcoming gig ('60s Mod type affair), I thought I'd use the Maruszczyk. Bloody hell! I'd forgotten what a totally awesome bass it is. Dialled just slightly towards the neck, it nails that P vibe, but with just a bit more clarity & smoothness than the Mustang provides. The Delano pickups were really growling nicely and it was effortless to play. Visually, it's not what this band requires (more’s the pity) but I'm definitely going to take it to next week's rehearsal just to see what the other guys say. Anyhoo, shameless picture posting time.

I'm definitely interested in what you think of it. 9.2kg, including packaging, sounds pretty light too.

Is anyone, who has one, going to try rewiring their's in phase?

I really see a fretless P in my future (or a Mustang, should I acquire a candidate for defretting), I want to get away from the more common, nasal fretless sound (MM, bridge J, etc).

Odd looking things, but they've definitely got something going on, especially in that black/tort combo. I read somewhere that these have a 37mm nut width, which seems very narrow. How does it feel to you, Frank?

There's a Bassman head on top of a big old 'fridge' at the rehearsal space my band uses, all it does is growl/grind. Perhaps the two amp setup your guitarist suggested might be the very thing, although a logistical PITA.

Time to attach the electrodes and bring this thread back to life ⚡️🧟♂️. I can’t believe that I didn’t post this back in 2021 when I bought it.

A ltd production run of Spector Euro-X's is incoming...

I like both the red and the black matte, but the red really makes me want to endure the inevitable pain I would incur when playing 😍. -
It’s great that we have someone on BC that has this kind of influence, well done again, @cetera. I love the reverse bird design to look at (even Firebirds!) but the ergonomics don’t work for me sadly . Just as well, that red cherry one is 😍.

The growliest pickups I’ve ever used are Nordstrand Big Singles (I had them in an Ibby SR), if your EHB doesn’t have those already, I think they’re a drop in replacement.
