  1. Danny’s tone is just amazing, certainly one of the reasons I’m hugely attracted to the DB. My first exposure to Danny was on David Sylvian’s Ink in the Well. I didn’t know who DT was (I’d only recently stared playing bass), but that sound! Sorry, I know this is a JM/DT thread, but I can’t not post this…
  2. Yeah, that’s a side gap. The problem that you can encounter with a side gap in the neck pocket, is when the neck/headstock receives a lateral blow and then the alignment can be askew. There is a school of thought that says the tighter the gap, the better the tone, but I’m not sure anyone has increased the gap on a well fitted neck to test the results. BTW, well played with the hyperbole, I like it.
  3. I thought it was just me. The guitar demos are OK, but the bass ones make me want to rip my ears off and throw them at the screen! Sorry for the OT rant. As you were.
  4. If it’s a side gap, a shim will merely plug the gap. FWIW, I had a ‘63 P bass that had a side gap you park a bus in (I may be exaggerating here ) but it sounded phenomenal. You should only use a shim if you can’t get the action low enough.
  5. There's No One Quite Like Gram Ma - St Winifred's School Choir
  6. That's the way I'd go. My pedalboard is set up: Sadowsky Preamp - EBS Octabass - EBS Unichorus - MXR Compressor - VTDI. This gives me all my FX, plus amp sim DIing to the desk, or my amp (or both if I'm using my rig for monitoring).
  7. Wow! That’s really poor. Replace all of them with Hipshots perhaps? I’ve certainly never had a day’s issue with them (or the Wilkinson clones TBH).
  8. I think this the source of your problem. I have a Mustang strung with EB Cobalt flats and I can get what it seems you’re after with a Tech21 VTDI.
  9. Bark at the Moon - Ozzy
  10. Me And You And A Dog Named Boo - Lobo
  11. Motorboatin’ - Chris Spedding
  12. Down The Boob Station At Midnight - The Jam
  13. Coming back to immediately go on the hunt for more gear, BCer to the core. 👏👏👏
  14. I have 2 basses by the same manufacturer, one has always needed occasional tweaks, whilst the other, barely ever. I guess the wood used in the neck and fretboard are more stable in the latter.
  15. I’m lucky enough to have worked with 3 of them live, one of which was the lead singer in the ‘80s covers band I was in. Not only a great vocalist, but a top keyboard player too (as seen in the video). On top of that, she’s a great vocal coach. She took me from sketchy BVs to singing lead, no mean feat I can tell you. All 4 ladies are busy musicians (as you’d expect), one of them does some very high profile work, Eurovision and the Platinum Jubilee gigs as just 2 instances. It’s been a privilege to work with them and to have been a part of the above project.
  16. Groove over chops every time for me and Robbie was great at that. His playing on Grace Jones’ recordings with him and Sly, is worth the price of admission alone.
  17. You’re welcome, apologies for not putting in more effort than the BC, welcome emoji, I must try harder. Good place this, as you’ll find. Lots of folk with expertise in many areas, not just playing bass - dive in.
  18. Thanks, I loved every minute of the production process and learnt a lot about recording and mixing along the way. It didn’t hurt that this is probably my favourite tune of all time. We followed it up with Don’t Give Up, but with the return to actual live performances, the video was never made, which is a shame as the recording was pretty decent.
  19. I’ve looked back through this thread and I can’t believe that I didn’t share this here when we did this back in 2020. Recorded during lockdown and filmed during the first lifting of restrictions.
  20. I really liked that interpretation, well played, gents. 👏👏👏 Edit: That ‘Ray sounds the business!
  21. Anything with an MM pickup in or around the classic Stingray placement should get you there. However, be careful of MM pickups located too far towards the bridge, as I’ve often found them to be more like a Jazz pickup on steroids than a Stingray.
  22. I’m all for something like the Spanish national anthem, no words. Then you don’t have to hear the awful singing of the players during the pre match formalities and there’s no finger pointing when someone isn’t singing.
  23. There was a short debate about this on Planet Rock, yesterday. My first thought were that Queen and The Who still continue under their original band name, despite only having 2 members from the classic line up. I’m not saying it’s right, just that there is precedent. BTW, Shamtera - 👏👏👏
  24. I took the Fender flats off of my JMJ and fitted them to my ‘Ray short scale, with even more wrapped around the tuners, no problems were encountered at all.
