My moments come from when I was playing guitar. The first, I was playing the Crystal Palace Bowl and a really big stage for the first time. We started the first song, which opened with my playing the song’s signature riff, I then went for my Woodstock moment and ran across stage, my normally quite long lead wasn’t that long it turned out, as I pulled it out of my pedal board. Fortunately, I made it back and plugged in again (which could be heard on the recording) just in time to play the riff again. The second time was with the same band, but this time on a much smaller stage. Suddenly, I had no no sound, yet everything was plugged in and all indicator lights showed all was working. It turns out that due to my movements (I had had a wee drink or three) my lead had snaked around the level control of my OD pedal and had turned it right down (perhaps this was a critique of my playing).

I tend to think the one finger per fret is something that bass players have inherited (for want of a better word) from guitar players. One finger makes sense for most guitar runs, but the spacing on a bass can make that very uncomfortable. For my part, when I was just learning to play guitar, OFPF wasn't a thing and I learnt to play in the most comfortable way, which was predominantly index, ring, pinky (it fitted the box version of a minor pentatonic). When I jumped ship to bass, I just carried on this way without knowing that it was a variation of the Simandl technique. I use OFPF for exercises and warm ups, but I'm not conscious of what finger I use when playing actual songs, just what works and gets me there in the most comfortable and efficient way for me. During lockdown, I did woodshed a lot of OFPF and manage to give myself tendonitis! The times I have played upright bass (a friend has one), my dodgy Simandl seems to work fine, as do the patterns that I'm used to on EB. I'd love a DB.

I love some Joni, but I can see where you’re coming from. I used to be the same with Geddy Lee, but I learned to like it (at least not hate it), which was made easier by already being a Budgie fan. Morrissey is one I can’t learn to like, however, and I’ve really tried, just so I can enjoy Marr & Rourke - no joy (no pun intended).
