Unless you’re a totally slavish, tribute band, adding your own embellishments is fine and what makes one a musician and should be encouraged IMO ( @Beedster’s a-hole guitar player needed a slap). Even the lines played by any of the original players are often different live anyway. The TP & The Heartbreakers tribute I play in use live versions for our sets rather than the album version (sometimes causes confusion when we forget to coordinate source material 😂). As to the WZ versions, I prefer the original line as it feels more ‘greasy’ and in keeping with the overall feel of the song (which I first heard in the soundtrack for The Colour of Money).

Did music lessons at school help with your musical life?
ezbass replied to Nail Soup's topic in General Discussion
In short - no. I quit music in the 5th year and took motor engineering, which I did find useful for maintaining my early bangers. The reading of the treble clef I learnt at primary school was the most useful musical thing I leant at school. -

On paper, it should be better. However, you never know until you try them out. Will either sound like a P bass? Yes, but bear in mind that not all P basses sound the same. There will obviously be a number of videos on YT, but here’s a couple to get you going:

Assuming you’re playing an SR 4 string, you’ll be used to a narrower nut width and slightly smaller body than you’d find with a Fender P. In which case, I’d suggest a Squier Classic Vibe Mustang: narrow nut width, small body, split pickup in the right right position and definitely within your budget. Or, if you want a bit more flexibility and medium scale, a Squier CV Jaguar.

The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
ezbass replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
I have no experience of their bass pickups, bit if they are anywhere as good as their P90 pickups for guitar, I'd definitely give the Artec Mudbucker pickup a go https://www.northwestguitars.co.uk/ebc4-mudbucker-pickup-for-sg-bass/ ridiculous value for money and quality tones. -

EB Cobalt flats G string rattle / buzz ? Advice please
ezbass replied to dmccombe7's topic in General Discussion
My first 4 sets of EB cobalts were pukka, the most recent set that I had fitted free by GG under an EB promotion, just weren’t right (patches of discolouration and not as lively as the previous sets). Given other reports of QC issues with cobalts seems to indicate a production problem, or at least a lack of thorough checking before releasing them into the wild. -

I play mine upside down and haven’t worn one away yet.

Wasn't bad, but in true BBC style they didn't proof it. Lots of talking about Aynsley Dunbar whilst showing pictures of Hughie Flint - amateur mistake! Also no mention of when PG briefly rejoined FM on tour when JS walked out (TBH this was new to me and only came about by reading the Wiki entry for Danny Kirwan - not the easiest person to work with it would seem and probably why he wasn't interviewed at the time).

Aah, congrats @stewblack. What to buy, what to buy? Beedster’s suggestion of a P Bass seems good — maybe a lightweight, red one 🤣.

When using a pick for guitar, I’ve always gone down the ‘thicker pick = better tone’ route. Therefore, I used 1.5-2mm picks on bass for ages, when the song required a pick tone - I’m a fingerstyle player mostly. Then I saw Bobby Vega at the LBGS using a .73mm and, like everyone else there, was blown away. So, I thought I’d try a thin, skinny, nasty pick just to see. It turned out to be a ‘Road to Damascus’ moment and I’ve been using them ever since (I still use thick ones for guitar though).

My thoughts exactly. -
Thanks, Andy. I couldn't make the group shoot, so I had home shot sequences spliced in. I was really pleased with how the YT compression enhanced the bass even more. FWIW, I recorded it via my Sadowsky pre-amp pedal (bass @ 12 o'clock, treble between 1 and 2) into a VTDI set flat.

How about a little short scale action? Perfect for picking up for a quick play. -
