Because of this thread I went out and bought a Sadowsky SBP-2 pre-amp pedal (cheaper than buying a Sadowsky bass and my internal organs remain my property). I know that it only boosts at 40Hz and 4KHz, but it seems to do something else too, don't ask me what, it's like fairy dust has been sprinkled on my already, not too shabby tone (IMO).

Go anyway, always worth a visit IMO.

Just had a free set of EB Cobalt Flatwounds (those puppies aren't cheap) fitted to my Maruszczyk Elwood L by the guys at GG Epsom. Even cleaned and conditioned my fretboard. Kudos.

I listened to it and, as ever, it was pretty unimaginative, Freebird and Comfortably Numb were always going to be in the top 5 somewhere (just like last year). Just listen to the request show and it's normally the same old, same old, so the results were to be expected. However, I was surprised to hear Wishbone Ash's Everybody Needs A Friend making it in at #35 (although I think Sometime World would have been a better choice). I voted for Tom Morello's solo on Audioslave's Like A Stone, suffice to say it didn't feature .

I have a P, a J and an MM type. They are all usable, but one will be better than the others for a particular band setting, musical style, etc. @Cuzzie makes a good point about being out FOH for a true picture of what each bass does away from the stage area. For recording, a P is hard, but not impossible, to beat, as it has a knack of really anchoring a track.

I stripped the finish off of a MM SUB and a Fender Roadworn, both had become sticky. First I used Nitromors and then finished it off with fine sandpaper. I then sealed them with Danish Oil, sanded back a bit, resealed and then a final very light ‘sanding’ with fine wire wool. I was pleased with the results.

Due to the recent Sadowsky GAS thread, I’ve become sucked into the GAS vortex once again. However, rather than going out and selling my current bass stock and various body organs to finance one of Roger’s finest, I’ve managed to be sensible and just add an SBP-2 to my pedal board. Even though it’s just bass and treble boost, it seems to do something more, don’t ask me what, but it does seem to sprinkle some ‘fairy dust’ on my tone, as Reg Presley of The Troggs would say (look it up). Very pleased with my purchase and looking forward to using it live in a couple of weeks. Big up to Guitar Guitar in Epsom for letting me demo it, twice. What’s that I hear you say? Very well...

Once you have them set up they’re very stable. I’ve been using them for years.

These are doubtless the same youth who have a number of ‘sleeps’ until their ‘holibobs’. No so much evolving as dumbing down. Old man rant over.

I have Cobalts on all my basses, bar one (a Rob Allen with the intended LaBella tapewounds) and I really like them. They feel great and sound like worn in nickel roundwounds to my ears. I initially put them on my fretless to reduce board wear, but still keep a really nice roundwound mwah and ended up fitting them to my fretted basses too. Downside, they’re not cheap.

Recently rewatched Almost Famous, I’d forgotten how good it is. Phillip Seymour Hoffman playing Lester Bangs is wonderful. However, it’s a pretty good ensemble performance altogether.

I have to say that I think the early, vinyl albums were enhanced by being able to listen to them, whilst poring over the artwork. CD inserts just aren’t the same.

Depending on what kind of Rush fan you speak to, this could be any era post ‘80 😂. My fave era is ‘80 - ‘93. Now, back on topic...

@LondonBassGuitarShow I'm hoping that there will still be free, albeit limited, entry to the performances and workshops, as in previous years.

Close To The Edge is always going to score highly with me, but I have a real soft spot for Yesterdays. Those early Banks/Kaye recordings have a real magic to them, despite not having the mega-chops of the later line ups. However, it is the version of America with the Howe/White/Wakeman line up on that album that really stands out for me - love it.

I was trying an Ibanez out in a shop, running through a few riffs some years back and was playing the line to Good Times, when a woman who was browsing said to me, “I like your groove,” I was quite taken aback.

I was tempted to go, but you've confirmed some of the reservations I had. I wouldn't mind seeing R30 or the Rio gig on the big screen though.

A curse on this thread! Having had my interest piqued, I thought I'd try a Sadowsky preamp pedal to see what the fuss is about tonally, I mean, how different can they really be? Today, I stuck one in front of a P bass, a Gibson Jnr double-cut and a Ricky. Sooo nice! It wasn't the usual masses of difference (often unusable) that I've had with both on-board preamps and some pedals, just nice and subtle, but super nice. Now I'm wondering about adding an Aguilar OBP-1 to one of my passive basses (it's the same boost only frequencies as the Sad IIRC) or trying a Sad Modern. Basschat screws me again with unnecessary GAS 😡!

Played the new double cut today, great playability and tone but a bit small for me. A good bass, perfect for those of a smaller stature, moving over from guitar, etc. Impressive stuff from the big G. I put it through a Sadowsky pre amp pedal and it was extremely toneful.

Great track that could have easily been lifted from The Police’s Sychronicity album (I love both bands, so win/win for me).

My singer also teaches. We do everything in the original keys. She’s given me some great tips on technique, now I’m confident enough to sing the occasional lead.
