Pickup height may be a factor, but it’s quite likely that the string height in the D & G is a bit low and they don’t have the room to vibrate before being choked off by the fingerboard. You’ll sacrifice a bit of ‘mwah’ by raising the string height, but they should sing more clearly.

They do indeed. My Maruszczyk Elwood Ls are crazy light and superbly balanced (33” scale, customs).

Top advice there. Find a therapy that works for you (osteopathy, chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage, etc) and keep it in as good a nick as you can manage with exercises (I use a foam roller for gentle stretching at home myself and visit an osteopath if it gets completely out of whack).

Yeah, it isn’t all about weight, it’s more where the weight is distributed. Various Stingrays I’ve had have been veering towards the ‘boat anchor’ end of the spectrum, but because of the balance, that haven’t felt as heavy as they might. Compare this to a quite light P bass I had that had a fair amount of neck dive and gave me more shoulder pain than the ‘Rays. However, get a bass that is both light and well balanced and you’re in hog heaven.

I owned one of the early releases of the Ray4 alongside a US SUB and full fat US Stingray 4 and 5 strings. It more than held its own in terms of sounding like an Stingray. Where I felt it fell a little short (and I mean just a little) was that the pre-amp was a bit brittle sounding to my ears, although easily fixed with amp eq. The set up on mine wasn’t brilliant on receipt either (a raised fret) and it was quite heavy (even for an MM) but perfectly balanced. It would definitely give you the sound you’re wanting to try.

I’m not sure what you mean by sensitive. But if you mean, do they pick up up on nuances in your playing, than yes they’re good, not Phil Jones or Euphonic Audio sensitive, but they do a fine job.

Very much this for me. Oh, and Paul Rogers (absolutely top vocalist) with Queen just sounded wrong to me. Similarly, Brian May playing Alright Now with his signature tone seemed wrong too. That venture was less than the sum of its parts for me.

Owned one, a 1212L. Great sounding cab, very particularly voiced for playing in a band. Doesn't sound great in isolation, but that's not what it was designed for.

Three months to go and still no confirmed line up? Very poor indeed. Sounds like it could end up being the guitar show’s sidekick in the long run, or disappear completely. However, I’m going with a bunch of guitar playing chums this year who I don’t see that often (one is another bassist, so I won’t be on my own whilst checking out the bass gear) so it’ll be a fun day anyway.

Aesthetically speaking, I like the P/J config. However, tonally speaking, I’m a fan of a P/P config.
