If by 'Showcase' you mean what I'll play in a soundcheck for the FOC engineer (was any bass player really ever hired by being able to play solo pieces?), it's normally a rip off of Tower of Power's Squib Cakes, or Robert Palmer's Sneaking Sally Through The Alley. If I'm feeling proggy, Spirit of Radio wins the day.

The best purchases I have made have both been guitar related (sacrilege, I know). One was a Bigsby for my Epi Casino Coupe and the other was a new body for Squier Tele. They are the best purchases because they stopped me spending far more on 2 new guitars. Actually, my Sadowsky SBP2 pedal stopped me from buying (or at least investigating at a very deep level) a Sad bass, so that’s a good one too.

Since I bought the Maruszczyk Jake (or was it free with strings? 😉) I’ve bought a Sadowsky pre amp pedal and new body for my 6 string Tele, so I’m well out.

It was ok, I guess. Lewis Capaldi plainly has some chops and has good comic timing when interviewed too. However, the mix still seems poor for the most part and do we really need yet another terrible version of Johnny B Goode? I can get that down at the local pub.

You have to like the style and musical genre. JP was incredibly adept, as is, for instance, Jeff Berlin. However, neither float my boat particularly. I imagine that there are guitarists that aren’t keen on Hendrix, but that doesn’t lessen his ability or influence. It’s OK for folks not to like certain icons, in my mind, and those who say otherwise don’t understand art.

Yeah, I’ve been there in the past, but in recent years I’ve bought kit for specific purposes and use them as such. This is not to say that I don’t experiment occasionally.

That’s what I did. The basswood underneath wasn’t great, but it wasn’t too bad either. Required lots and lots of sanding though.

I’m going to go with ‘different’. The addition of guitars made for added interest for me and also meant I went with guitar playing friends (it was a cool boys’ day out). However, that addition impinged on the bass workshops and performances. Location was OK, it certainly allowed for a post show curry and a mid show beer, but the architecture, although brighter and nice to look at, was acoustically challenging. Will I go again? That will all depend on who’s appearing and better forward planning of the same from the organisers.
