  1. Charge the drummer the full cancellation fee of the rehearsal rooms if he cancels last minute, that’ll focus him on committing properly or letting new blood in. Obviously, let him know this in advance and soon.
  2. I hear Bobby V too; very nice ‘chucking’. Both fingerstyle and pick are equally appealing to me, both really nice, just different. Then again, I also play both with fingers or pick so I’m already predisposed to like both.
  3. Just browsing the public-peace website and came across this https://www.public-peace.de/bass-guitars/maruszczyk/elwood/4-string/1479-elwood-4p-3-tone-sunburst-medium150134
  4. This. Also check the public-peace website and Bassfreaks for their Jake and Elwood reduced scales.
  5. Classic white does it for me. However, mirrored is pretty ‘rawk’.
  6. No, it was some sort of Friday evening chat show IIRC.
  7. My silhouette was on the TV back the '80s. I was in a section of the audience behind Mike Aspel on some show he anchored. Embarrassingly, I had a perm back then, so I was really obvious.
  8. I've just seen this in the for sale section of BC and thought of this thread.
  9. So, I went to the ‘Thunder thumbs - Celebrating The Music Of Louis Johnson’ gig, last Friday and I’m pleased to report that it was as funky as a monkey, wearing funky trousers. The band were as tight as a gnat’s chuff and Phil Mulford’s playing was par excellence. I had expected an awful lot of clattery slapping and popping (think any bass show/exhibition you’ve ever been to) but no, the eq was set so that it didn’t become a clatterfest, just really solid, chest thumping bass. I saw another member of the BC family there, one @Nickytwister, who seemed to be really enjoying it (Nick is no slouch himself when it comes to funking it up). If you get a chance to see this show, take it, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
  10. Yeah, stick with the chrome. A great big black blob of a control panel will spoil the look IMO.
  11. It sure is a different beast now.
  12. I was at a gig on Friday where Phil Mulford was using a Stingray, 2 band. Despite it being a tribute to Louis Johnson gig, with plenty of slapping and popping, there was none of the hi-if, thin sound you’re trying to avoid. Instead, it was full, thick and punchy. With that in mind, you could try a Sterling by Music Man ‘Ray. Some have a narrower nut width (38mm) and is certainly appropriate to ‘70s music. There’s one in Guitar Guitar in Glasgow, which might be easier for you to get to than Warwick. https://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/product/181219336317008--music-man-sterling-ray24ca-classic-3-tone-sunburst
  13. I have a few friends, in different bands playing Gt Yarmouth this weekend, it always seems like a real blast. Congrats on your new position. Funnily enough, I’ve just received an email from Pete Feenstra, advertising gigs at The Boom Boom Club, where the Blues Devils and Stray are scheduled to play.
  14. The price of musical instruments is subject to the law of diminishing returns. For instance, Harley Benton humbucker equipped, flame top, double cut - £200. Very similar specced PRS - £5k. Is the PRS a ‘better’ guitar (they both do the same thing after all)? Yes it is. But is it worth 2500% more? Only the buyer of the more expensive guitar can answer/justify that. Now, back to the basses in question, that Fodera is only 256% more expensive than the Sputnik. I know I’ve used a ridiculous comparison BTW, but other makes are also available (Squier/Fender USA, Epiphone/Gibson, etc). Vive la difference and the choice we have I say.
  15. We’ll see.
  16. I’m going to the ‘Thunderthumbs - Celebrating The Music Of Louis Johnson’ gig tonight. Report to follow.
  17. I have experience of this with Fender. I had a truss rod that ran out adjustment on a Roscoe Beck signature. I had to add a washer to give me the required adjustment. Fortunately, I only needed an extra quarter to half turn, so it was a simple modification.
  18. I try to get threads going there, but it seems the majority of skinny stringed, axe wielders are loath to leave their current forums or join one at all ☹️
  19. When my drummer (who is fantastic by the way) throws in a little something, it always makes me smile and seems to make me play better.
  20. Snap!
  21. I am not a frog and neither do I have an upright (unfortunately/yet).
  22. 107 pages of content, including: opinions; problems; advice and porn, makes this a completely viable thread IMO, no matter what its origins. My Maruszczyks have been great and have consigned my 4003s to being merely decorative. In other news, I’ve been toying with swapping the necks of my Elwood Ls over for a while. Today I thought I’d check the hole alignment. Yeah, that’s not happening, they are not the same. I shouldn’t be surprised, Adrian has said in the past that (at least back then) that each body and neck are made for each other. Hmm, other GAS reducing tactics must be employed methinks.
  23. Video with what looks one those Robelli basses being used by Mr Dart. Thanks to @chris_b for originally posting this video in another thread.
  24. Certainly when Jack Stratton was demonstrating its versatility, I could barely tell the difference (a bit more attack with the pick, but not much more than that). Change out that knob for something more discreet (a Jazz bass knob perhaps) and it'd look much better IMO.
