1. I reckon you're probably looking at £250.
2. How good were 10cc? Extremely if you ask me. I forget just how good they were/are, although I'd have rather heard something other than Rubber Bullets (never one of my favourite tracks of theirs). Ibibio Sound Machine pushed all the right buttons to get my interest; nice. The Norwegian lass sounded OK, but I felt a song like that doesn't benefit from being done 'acoustically', it needed a rhythm section. Joan Shelley was pleasant enough but a bit a bit soporific; more dynamics please. The noisy, garage sounding Canadians didn't do it for me. Don't get me wrong, I like raw, but it needs something that makes you notice something different, X factor if you will. Benjamin Booker, 2 very different genres played, neither of which were done particularly impressively and certainly didn't need Mr Holland tinkling away. However, for all my finger pointing, 2 likes from me is still one more than usual.
3. Stephen Stills. Check out his playing on the first CS&N album.
4. I had a Basic VM4 and it was an absolutely outstandingly built bass. The placement of the MM pickup made it sound more like a very muscular J bass pickup, which meant no volume drop off when compared to the P type pickup. The neck pickup soloed was just a very solid P bass tone and what's not to like about that? The only reason I sold it was that I went all five string, which didn't last as I'm back on four stringers again. If Maruszczyk hadn't been brought to my attention, I wouldn't have hesitated to get another Sandberg. FWIW, Chris Childs of Thunder (who, with Thunder's recent high profile can play anything he likes) plays Sandbergs these days.
5.
a cracking tone. Pity there was this bloke staggering around "singing" over his playing.
''Twas ever thus: vocalists, guitarists, keyboard players' left hands, etc - cue the entirety of BC nodding sagely in agreement.
6. Thanks for these suggestions guys. I have to say that the Smooth Hound looks like the best 'like for like' replacement for my Samson, but keep those suggestions coming, together with your justifications.
7. So, today at a rehearsal session, I had some fluctuations in volume level, a little crackling and an odd, occasional red LED; it appears that my old Samson Airline system is on the way out It seems the time has come for a new system (yes I still want to be wireless). What do you recommend and, almost more importantly, why do you recommend it?
8.
Any chance someone can post a link to the configurator? I can't find it on the website.
https://public-peace.de/configurator/elwood-c You'll find it under the Custom Shop tab.
9. Just watched the Tuesday show on catch up. The first Blondie number was good, but Call Me showed that age has taken its toll, especially when Debbie appeared to forget the words in the middle 8. I liked Boabab, they do what they say on the tin. The drum and sax were desperately in need of a third player (perhaps a bass player, not that I'm prejudiced of course ) to sketch out the chords and add some groove. The sequenced bands were unexciting; the problem with sequencing and Future Islands were odd, well the singer was, especially the way he was ruining the detection pattern of the SM58 with his hand (rookie error). All in all, better than the last show I watched, but only just.
10.
I've decided I like the pickguard thats on it. Adds a bit of character. It is nearly 30 years old to be fair so won't be flawless. One 'gripe' I may have is the bridge pickup seem a bit too sharp. Is there any replacement pups that would be better than the stock pickups? I'm not even sure what pickups would be in it. Any suggestions?
I can't speak highly enough of the DiMarzio Area Hot T. It still retains that Tele character, but adds P90 grunt into the bargain; fabulous pickup. A friend of mine has a Bareknuckle pickup in his, which is pretty sweet too.
11.
I was very impressed with the fast response from Reinhard , on a Saturday morning as well ! - and as regard the sound ..well..just perfect for what I want . I do like the mid freq selection 300Hz , 500Hz or 800Hz in the pre amp . I have it set at 500Hz , as when the middle pot is increased it boosts the D and G strings to balance out with the E and A which sees a little quiet ( but they are an old set of strings )
Yes he seems to answer his emails, no matter what day it is; very impressive service, rather like the products he makes.
12. I'm waiting on an answer from Reinhard at Delano about the switch wiring for the MC 4 HE/M2. I'm looking to replace the Bassculture MM pickup in my Maruszczyk fretless. Unfortunately, it's not as straightforward as you'd hope as I have a 3 way rotary switch fitted and I'm struggling to identify which wire does what (I have series, parallel and single coil options). I believe Reinhard is talking to Adrian at Maruszczyk so I should have an answer soon; fingers crossed.
13. That was good fun and my basic configuration was not a whole lot cheaper than my more specialised recent custom build. Adrian certainly doesn't load the costing for off standard spec builds like my 33" scale, wider than normal neck, etc. I imagine things would be somewhat different at more well known custom shops.
14. Peter Gabriel's Digging in the Dirt might be an appropriate song to play with it.
15.
Does wanting to bludgeon the guitarist/singer to death count,
Yes it does . Same here, although two different blokes in two different bands (one singer, one guitarist).
16. Seems like a lot of trouble to go to for a novelty instrument. YMMV.
17.
Forgot to watch it. The listings had Jameraqio (can't spell it) as being on. Nobody has mentioned it, were they not on?
Jay Kay is unwell apparently.
18. I've just crept up to 4 (2 fretted 4 strings a fretless 4 and a fretless 5), but I'm thinking that I only need one fretted as the Maruszczyk does everything I need in a fretted bass. The Ric is looking very worried and well it should.
19. Well none of that was for me I'm afraid, even Mr Cray failed to pique my interest.
20.
They're well smart! Congrats
Ta very much. I'm starting to wonder whether I now need the Rickenbacker and the Rob Allen, although Mrs Ez really likes the Rob Allen so that's probably here to stay, especially as it does something somewhat different tonally. The Ric however...
21. The epitome of smugness...
22. I played my new Elwood in 'anger' for the first time last night. Everything I gushed about earlier was there in a band situation; marvellous. The smallest turn of the blend control altered the tone to fit each song perfectly (not that I need to alter it from the both pickups on full setting very much). Ergonomically, my shoulder thanked me for not having to support the Rickenbacker for a full rehearsal session. On a separate note, I'm so impressed with the Delano JSBC HEs that I'm looking to replace the pickup in my fretless with the Delano MM equivalent.
23.
Another of my favorites is David Grissom from the short lived and now defunct Storyville with Malford Milligan on vocals. We do a few of their songs in our set including; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtD4xi5dOvk
I loved Storyville, especially the first album, A Piece Of Your Soul (the second, Dog Years, was a bit meh); great guitarists, top vocals and a rhythm section to die for (Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton).
24.
Just flicking through the channels tonight and came across Later, a black woman on guitar and backed by a band made up of Mumford and ZZ Top lookalikes - bloody awful IMO.
I wondered just how hard the guitarist had to work to mess up the classic sound of a Gretsch into a Fender so badly. I found the conflicting tones of the guitar, her voice and the rest of the band rather jarring.
