1.
Lucky you! Haven't had that mythical email yet. It's like a unicorn! This frog demo is brilliant too. https://www.youtube....uEU0Vm15SeAXE-6
Love that 12th fret inlay.
  2.
Yay! But... Friday? *whispers* It's good Friday. Does that change anything?
Yeah, I thought Friday was ambitious with the season and all. Just received a text from FedEx; Wednesday. I was planning to be out, but as I'm definitely out the day after, I'm staying in (no surprises there then).
  3. Just had an email from Adrian that FedEx were there, so he's shipped it already - ETA Friday! 4. I was looking at Facebook this morning and saw an ElwoodL on the Maruszczyk page, similar to my build, except with Extender pickups and an active preamp. This got me thinking about my build and when it might be finished (it was seven weeks yesterday from ordering). I then opened my email and.... 5.
Just a simple question guys...truss rod is inverted in Adrian's basses....did I understand that right ??

Definitely on the Jakes. Can't speak for the others.
Lefty tighty, righty loosey on Elwood Ls too.
  6. If Mesinger start doing a Firebird-a-like, I'm in real trouble.
  7.
Morning guys , may be of some interest to some of you.... adrian told me they just did their 1st Thunderbird design Maruszczyk ;-) other Gibson shapes maybe will come later.
This is not good news for my GAS
  8. Teddy sounded good to me, not a million miles from Chris' tone. More evidence to support the 'it's in the fingers' argument, although I think amplification has a fair bit to do with it too (I'm guessing GL was using his SansAmp setup, configured to SVT).

    Guitar for jazz

There's always the single cut version of that Ibanez http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/electric_guitars_detail.asp?stock=13120714180658 and if you can go the extra £s the George Benson is rather nice http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/electric_guitars_detail.asp?stock=04030414375318 As to a double cutaway semi, you really can't go wrong with the Epiphone 335.

    Guitar for jazz

Looks nice and reminiscent of the Vintage brand jazz box. I prefer a jazz box to have a floating, single pickup and scratch plate mounted controls, although Joe Pass seems to have done fine with body mounted hardware.
  11.
I come from many years playing guitar, so I tend to play more of a "out front" bass style, so I'm hoping the Ric helps with my style in the mix.
The tone from the bridge p/up is certainly a more mid-centric sound than the combined one and if you're just using that pickup, the jump in output won't matter and it should be more prominent mix-wise. I mainly use the combined and occasionally the bridge soloed, which is why I need to control the the change in volume. I've never used a bass (or guitar) with such an unbalanced output from the two pickups but, having spoken with other users, this appears to be the standard Ric set up. They certainly are different from others in many ways, but it's that difference that makes them so endearing to those who like them.
  12. My 4003s is my first and only Ric. I'd tried one before, many years ago at a show and it was truly awful to play. I tried this one just to ensure I had the same opinion or if things had changed. From the moment I plugged it in, I knew I needed that tone in my life and it played really nicely too (so things were way better). For me, the pickup cover had to go and I had to cover the gaping hole it left, so I bought a bezel; sorted. For me, it's a bass that makes a huge visual statement, especially the fireglo (which I also have), with a big sound to back it up. I don't think it's a million miles from a P bass sound-wise, with both pickups. The soloed bridge offers a more middle centric tone with a volume hike, which needs taming so as not to stick out of the mix too much. I found the knurled, mute screws dug in my hand so I removed them; far more comfy. Having the unbound body is a plus for me, no overly sore forearm from the edge digging in, although I still do find it fairly hard on the arm because of the flat top. A great choice of bass IMO, but of course I'd say that
  13. Regatta remains one of my top 10 albums to this day, Andy Summers' guitar work on this and Zenyatta is just sublime.
  14. I've recently been reminded of what a great guitar player Steve Morse is, one of those guys who you can recognise within a few notes. I remember this band, featuring Mr Morse and others, being formed but didn't really pay them much mind at the time. But now I'm hooked. The tracks Kayla and The Storm (starting around 11:40) are wonderful to my ears. The band also feature Dave LaRue on bass, who is no slouch on our favoured instrument. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2weoDis2_0&t=5s
  15.
Any bass is good for Blues. . . even Blues Fusion. There's not a lot in Blues genres so it's what you make of it that counts. You can be Willie Dixon or Roscoe Beck, it's all in your groove and style. Edit for clarification
Nice to see Roscoe Beck mentioned. With that in mind, if you can find a Fender Roscoe Beck Signature bass, that'd see you right. That being said, really whatever feels best and sounds good to you will the best one.
  16.
Am I right in thinking that Adrian uses a reverse trussrodd or something?
Elwoods are the same. It was a bit disconcerting when I first set my fretless up but, once you know, it's all good. I'd love to see Adrian do a 'part 3' to those set up videos and cover fret dressing
  17.
Nice to have you with us! 8 weeks into my build on Friday. This wait isn't getting easier.
6 weeks this coming Tuesday for me. The wait was a lot easier the first time around.
  18. Mrs Ez comes along to my gigs if they're local (she doesn't want to sit around for hours while we set up and sound check, or hang around whilst we pack up, I'd avoid it too if I could) and she has someone to go with as she doesn't like being Billy Nomates.
  19. A stunning player and genuinely nice guy it seems. I saw him live with Mr Big, a great gig, but I've never liked his tone. I've always thought he'd have been the best choice to replace John Enwistle in The Who.
  20. The various bands that I've been in all seem to aim for the £1500 mark, although this is ends up being negotiated to less, where the couple's budget is tight. Given the prep beforehand and the fact that you're most likely to be there all day waiting to go on (normally for an abbreviated set because the speeches have been never ending) I don't think £250 per person is unreasonable.
  21.
would it fit in a rifle case? if so it would be just the thing for starting an incident at the airport
There's an amusing story that Guy Pratt tells about a run in with the law and his cased Steinberger during the IRA troubles.
  22. I prefer to play fretless, always have and have just spent the last hour or so going over songs in my band's set that I need to remind myself of; I used the fretless for all of them. The only ones where the sound didn't work quite as well as on fretted, was where there was a fast moving root/octave line (disco-like), it was OK, but the fretted would've been better. Also anything that needs slapping is better on fretted, you can slap a fretless (Pino on Come Back And Stay, for instance) but it's not the best IMO.
