I Can’t Go For That - Hall & Oates

Last weekend the band launched into The Who’s Substitute, whilst I decided to play I Can’t Explain. It took me almost an entire verse to work out why it sounded wrong

Supported local heroes, The Owls, for a St Andrew’s (St SkAndrews) night do, which was sold out, despite being £20 a ticket. 3 band line up and we were on first. Turned up early so we could get a proper sound check, man alive the big ass PA was über loud! We played well and folk were up dancing almost straight away, not bad for a 7:30 start. The one problem we had was the other 3 in the band decided to play Substitute, whilst I was playing I Can’t Explain; you can’t get the staff . Great comments from everyone and looks like we’ll get some work off of the back of it. My gear? JMJ Mustang through my M87 comp and VTDI, into the top act’s, bass player’s TC head into Ampeg 4x10, which was unnecessary really, as the sound I was hearing was all from the monitors.

Steven Wilson summed it nicely with the intro to To The Bone, “Once we've made sense of our world, we wanna go f*** up everybody else's, because his or her truth doesn't match mine”.

^^^^ 100% this. What works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another. When considering playability, weight plays heavily (no pun intended) into my consideration, it doesn’t bothers others. They’re not wrong and neither am I. I think that we all consider playability, sound and looks when looking at an instrument, but not necessarily in the same order, or with the same importance. Ultimately, you do you, I’ll do me.
