The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
ezbass replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
Played my JMJ Mustang and shorty ‘Ray last night, the Mustang kicked the ‘Ray’s derrière. What a bass! -
Wow! Impressive venue.

Much better last night than the previous one (we were part of a 5 band line up then and it was awful). Our third gig and everyone seems to stepped their game up, which is encouraging. I decided to use my shorty Stingray and during soundcheck, it seemed to cut through nicely FOH, but was lacking oomph to my ears. On stage it was often difficult to hear it. For the second set I changed to the JMJ Mustang and there was that low end power, I only hope that it sounded as good out front. Only downer was that I dinged the ‘Ray on the drummer’s floor tom, such is the life of a gigging bass I guess.

I have no idea what you're talking about...

Er? It's one o'clock and time for lunch (hum de dum, de dum) When the sun beats down and I lie on the bench I can always hear them talk There's always been Ethel "Jacob, wake up, you've got to tidy your room now" And then Mister Lewis "Isn't it time that he was out on his own?" Over the garden wall, two little lovebirds Cuckoo to you Keep them mowing, blades sharp I know what I like And I like what I know Getting better in your wardrobe Stepping one beyond your show (your show) Your show Sunday night, Mr. Farmer called, said "Listen son, you're wasting time" "There's a future for you in the fire escape trade" "Come up to town" But I remembered a voice from the past "Gambling only pays when you're winning" Had to thank old Miss Mort for schooling a failure Keep them mowing blades sharp I know what I like And I like what I know Getting better in your wardrobe Stepping one beyond your show I know what I like And I like what I know Getting better in your wardrobe Stepping one beyond your show When the sun beats down and I lie on the bench I can always hear them talk Me, I'm just a lawnmower You can tell me by the way I walk -
Pretty sure I’ve shared this before in the dim and distant past, but it’s in my head today, so it might as well be in everyone else’s.

I use a B&Q paint tin opener on my JMJ Mustang, £1.80. -
Something a little different for the thread, not a specific track, but the marvellous Julia Hofer playing through some classic reggae grooves.
-
Given the distance from the old holes, you should be ok in terms of strength, but you might want to fill them anyway.

If @Aidan63’s spares aren’t the right size, go with the Wilkinson’s and modify as above. They’d be a nice upgrade I’d imagine.

I think I remember Phil saying he’d selected the 8x10.

Definitely, I would have liked a bit more grit on the edge of breakup clip to put it more in the ballpark area of the Ampeg. As @CalDeep says the ‘peg is enormous, which isn’t in its favour with me, but Origin stuff is eye wateringly expensive. This is probably why I’ll be sticking with the VTDI, which isn’t an awful option at all.
-
That’s good to know, thanks. This means I can look away as my ageing frame doesn’t like anything over 4kg (actually it’s less, but one doesn’t wish to appear too wimpy ).

There is a thread from a few years back that asked this very question. But in answer to this thread, it's the first 2 letters of my surname and my instrument of choice, not anything to do with easy. I wish I hadn't chosen that as a username now because of that confusion.
-
Here you go... I preferred the OF except for the edge of break up (there didn't seem to be that much difference). However, as these were done without tweaking the EQs particularly, the Ampeg might have fared better than demonstrated. The B15 emulation is spot on to my cloth ears. I'd like to hear a 3 way comparison including the VTDI.

Splendid work on your introduction with the photos. 👍

And another request for pics.

Such a great colour and the whole aesthetic is just right IMO. What’s the weight of your newly acquired beast, as I’m sorely tempted myself?
-
I’d hazard a guess at it being down to the syncopation. Metallica (who I like, so not dissing them, or metal, at all) songs are more straight ahead, with the vocal following the riff rhythm (or vice versa), whilst songs out of Stax are more rhythmically complex in their interaction.

There will be bleeding from orifices.

If you can hold a tune and perhaps pick out a harmony, you should definitely sing. However, as many have said, playing bass and singing are often at odds because of the rhythm. I was encouraged to sing more in my last band, even taking a couple of leads. Bowie’s China Girl was particularly challenging because of the rhythm thing, particularly the second section. The only way I found to make it work was to wait until the house was empty (no one wanted to hear those early attempts) and kept going over the part until some separation happened. Then every time I sang and played it, it became better. No easy solution, but worth it.

I bought that when it came out, Remake Remodel, 2HB and Ladytron are still great tracks today.
