The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
ezbass replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
Oh my, 😍. That does it for me. Pink - who knew? -
A scene from last night’s stage There is a short video on the venue’s FB page, of us playing, which manages to capture the moment where I play the riff a tone out 🤦🏻. Do I style it out? No, stick out tongue and laugh. I arrived last and so set up in the space left, the angle of the video camera meant that pillars obscured both the guitarist and keyboard player; I’m ok with it (bum riff notwithstanding).

That’s not horrific and a set of lightweight tuners would help and keep the weight in the body, balance-wise; colour me intrigued (for this and the other P type). The PA was weird, as we were mixing it with our own desk (I arrived a bit later, so didn’t see if there was a house desk available, but there must be, speakers, monitors and power amp but no desk doesn’t make sense). Seemed to be a bit of an earth loop issue with some supply outlets, but nothing terrible and only in one of the monitors. A wee trip down the coast for you, go for it, I might break with convention and even venture down for a gander.

I’m glad the D5 is working out, I’m really getting into that aesthetic. How’s the weight on one of those (I’m a lightweight wimp, ergo my heaviest bass, the JMJ, is 3.7kg). We played Clark’s in Dundee, nice venue with a great owner and staff. Easy load in & out, an actual (if low) stage, PA, all good, probably the nicest pub I’ve played anywhere.

You like what you like, @ped, nowt wrong with that. That surf green Tele looks the biz!

A pub gig for us and a bit disappointing really. All the hard work done on rehearsal, working in the new drummer, tightening up endings, etc, seem to fall away. Guitarist/BL constantly tuning between songs and taking a while doing it, drummer speeding up noticeably in certain sections (rather than follow, I held the timing and made him slow down, otherwise it would have been a train wreck). It’s our 4th gig and 1st for the drummer, folk liked it, venue owner liked it (although playing an ‘80s playlist during the breaks for a mod band was weird, especially as it was pretty much the set list of my previous band), but I’m just used to better. Hopefully, things will improve.

Having previously used a Mustang (see above), it’s probably not a big issue for him. I’ve discovered that I prefer a slabby body over a very contoured one. I much prefer my slab bodied JMJ over my HB Mustang-alike and shirty ‘Ray. Obviously, others prefer it the other way around. -

I saw him using a Trent with them, on the telly. Prior to the Trent, he was using JMJ Mustang. -

In my experience, I find shorties to have more clear fundamental that long scales, certainly less overtones, and do not have less low end at all, regardless of pickup position.
