1. Thank you all. I fear the budget may be too limited but I'll give the RCF's a go.
2. My band is moving from a Peavey passive 15" set up (with powered mixer) to a new rig, based on active cabs. Kind of looking at Alto/Behringer/EV. Can anyone give me the benefit of their experience and come up with some recommendations? Usually just vocal with some support/spread for the guitar/keys. We rehears in a studio where they have Alto TS15s and they do sound good. Possibly some occasional drum/bass but rarely, I would think. Any thoughts gratefully received.
3. You're not the author of that brilliant letter of complaint to Virgin about their in-flight food are you? :-)
4. Recently bought one of these (sunburst) and it is a fantastic bass. Excellent build quality, sounds great and plays great.
5. Bought a bass from Tonci. Great comms, fast delivery and very well packaged. Don't be put off by the fact that he is not in the UK, highly recommended.
6. Maybe I'm less sensitive (there's probably a graph for it!). While not a scientist, I have worked in a scientific environment and it is the nature of scientists to probe and question any claim. I was around when scientists were engaged in work on Thrust, the speed of sound on land. There were heated discussions around the minutae of the project and I recall how it was proved (because air pressure is part of the equation) that some parts of the car would achieve Mach1 before other bits of it. I, as a layman, was left thinking that it's one thing so it must achieve mach 1 in its entirety at the same time - not so. I don't profess to know much of the technical arguments but I have a healthy scepticism of any claim by a salesman and so I find this discussion very interesting. I'm not sure I see any casual put-downs but a mere statement of fact.
7. But what bass would Fotherington-Thomas play (he is thoroughly wet and a weed)?
8. I can recommend the George Melly book 'Owning Up' as a brilliant first hand account of life in a band in those days - and the opinions of other musicians to those in the Jazz/Rock'n'Roll world.
9. He was on that Talking Music programme and was wonderfuly humble and engaging (as always). His autobiography is an astounding book and left me thinking that being in Chic was about the most dull part of his life!
10. We are called 'rosbifs' in France and I dare say there are other equivalents in other countries. I don't have any problem with anybody referring to me as anything, frankly. Odd that I never thought of Polack as anything other than a similar term (to rosbif) and wasn't derogatory in any way.
11. I was a member back in the 70s. The great thing was the fact you could join under your stage name. I was always amused to note (according to the area handbook) that Jaco Pastorius lived at 14 Highfield Avenue, Waterlooville. Portsmouth, as did I. :-)
12. Yes, hopefully that last picture shows the contouring. It's vaguely axe shaped in cross section. Not seen a Jazz in the flesh but I suspect the contouring is the same. Light and very comfortable.
13. Have a serious look at a Japanese P-bass. I would suggest anyone dipping their toes to buy second hand as you are more likely to get your money back if you decide you don't like it.
14. I'm guessing Newhaven. Not sure how the relative cost of ferries from there compare with Dover:Calais. The advantage of that crossing is the tunnel where you are 30 minutes from France and so much less time spending a fortune in the ferry's overpriced bar as peoples ghastly kids run round you screaming all the time! The crossings from Pompey are about 4.5 hours I believe. I do a fair few gigs depping for a band that is in Europe a lot but they are blues based and play places that cater for that type of music. Maybe Google rock music bars not too far from wherever you land. There is a fair amount of kudos in being a UK band over there and so you could find it works out for you. The UK is s0dding miserable by comparison.
15. The realities of pub gigs are pretty harsh and the money hasn't really changed in all the years I've ever done it. The main problem is establishing yourself so that the band can earn the bigger fees. Similarly, the number of band members will not affect the fee either. I used to gig in your patch a lot, with a band that was very popular on that circuit. Pretty much every single venue we played has now gone so I have nothing to offer beyond good wishes. You are pretty much left to do the slog of playing places and building up a following as we have all done in the past. A new band (no matter who is in it - and I mean your past glories on the scene) is a new band and has to start again. Once you have got your foot on the ladder then you can improve things on the money front but there isn't a short cut to that unhappily. You are not going to get any more than £250 and I would be surprised if you got even that to begin with. I would have put the initial figure somewhere between £150 and £200. One slightly off-piste suggestion would be to try and get yourselves over to Europe. Much better experience, you get paid, fed and watered and people want to be entertained. They don't stand with their arms folded and dare you to impress them.
16.
Sex on fire etc. Well documented in several threads here. I'm sure you wouldn't call be a f***ing prick if you were stood next to me. That's the internet for you eh?
Some of your responses are suggesting people well might. I can only see some gentle leg pulling going on.
17. Thought it looked familiar. I guess they're hoping Macca will be in MPL and sign them up.
18. I'm sure they won't be worrying their pretty little heads about it. I'll get my coat.......................
19. Is that Soho Square in the background? I used to see a group of those guys regularly in that area.
20. I have not playd a Jazz version but I would think the neck on the Prcision is wider than the Jazz. I don't see any other obvious differences (aside from the body styling of course).
21. I had a quick play on this yesterday evening and really enjoyed it. Lovely bass, just what you'd expect from a JV.
22. I tune up before the gig or when changing basses during the gig. Only check tuning on the bass I'm playing during the gig if I feel the bass has moved. Have to say, it almost never happens.
