After ages not being used, I wired up my Live 1604 mixer and found that the onboard DSP effects are not working. The little screen graphics (that show the number of the effect chosen) are illegible but, even so, no effects are available. Not sure whether there has been a build up of condensation during the period of inactivity but it would be a pity to have to buy a new mixer. Is a repair/replacement of the effects unit a viable option? Your thoughts would be appreciated. I could move to an external unit but not want to if it can be avoided.

Does the OP have a budget in mind? That will have a big bearing on any suggestion. My only suggestion would be sure to end up with (at least) two speakers (not necessarily in different cabinets). Two speakers are (in my experience) far more commanding sound-wise. I wouldn't go so far as to suggest a specific cone size. Try and check stuff out (which won't be possible at gig volume, of course). Your prior experience may lead you in a certain direction.

There is so much choice of great lightweight rigs around these days. I am from the same era and am delighted with my own lightweight Mesa Boogie rig. You don't need to invest as much as I have to achieve the result you want. Try stuff and make up your own mind.

I wonder where your bass is? Is it near your ankles? The position of the bass influences the bend of your wrist etc. This can have a bearing.

I don't want to argue but you've only said what you weren't using up to now. I seem to recall an early interview with Mark King somewhere he talks about the ergonomics of a Fender not being conducive to slap bass. Didn't Jaydee basses have some groove on them, to accommodate the plucking by the right hand? probably totally wrong but I have that vague memory.

I'm just interested in what you were playing and the gigs you were doing. You seem to have an interesting history. I was into a band called Upp at this kind of time. No slapping involved, so not really anything relevant to the thread (and Stephen Amazing - bass player - used a Jazz with flats. No, an idea of what you were using would be interesting. It could have been an Audition but that's unimportant.

Now I've just figured out that the name in italics means they're typing (yes, I know it says that) I have to wait for you to finish!! 🙂
