I bought this only recently. It's a really nice bass but I think the fingerboard radius is bigger than the basses I am used to - it feels flatter than 'standard'. Very nice and playable but 48 years of muscle memory are hard to overcome! Serial number information and other research shows this is an alder body, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. Everything works fine. The tuners are not the original ones (when I bought it, a couple of the bushings had cracked - they seemed to be metalised plastic). I had some better quality tuners and bushes in the parts drawer (I suspect they're Fender Japan but can't swear to it). I've given it a clean and did the fingerboard with lemon oil. All in all, it's a very good bass and I was very pleasantly surprised when it arrived. The colour is best described as burgundy and the scratchplate is a sort of Cornish ice cream colour (best description I can give it). The pictures give a good impression of the appearance. The previous seller fitted it with a new set of (what I reckon are) Rotosound Roto Bass strings, and I have shortened their life by about 20 minutes. It comes with a Fender cover (it's the bag a Fender Japan bass would come in). I won't call it a gig bag. The bass will be very well packed in any case. The important numbers: Weight is a comfortable 9lbs 7oz. Nut width is 43mm As always, collection is preferred and I am also willing to drive a reasonable distance to hand it over. I was a bit optimistic on price so dropped to something more attractive.

Certainly wish I still had my two PB 70US basses. Amazing instruments.

Suggest non-MusicMan basses with growly MM-like alter-ego's?
Steve Browning replied to Jolltax's topic in Bass Guitars
I often look at the Fender Dimension and wonder if that is MM like in character. -
Just sold an OLP Stingray to Phil. Dead easy transaction and payment was swift. Perfect way to sell on BC. Steve

Probably my favourite would be Stephen Amazing (Upp). John Deacon is my biggest influence and other names have already cropped up but this guy knows his way around and is pretty dead funky! No visuals to this but stick Upp into YouTube and you get a clip of Upp playing behind Jeff Beck on the Beeb. UPP - Nitto (1977) - YouTube

The Wal that’s in the Band Aid video… up for sale…
Steve Browning replied to TrevorR's topic in Bass Guitars
John edwards didn’t play with status quo at live aid it was Alan Lancaster, John joined later when they ‘reformed’ after the live aid exposure. Correct. I never said he did. I guess he could have been there as an observer. - Genius. Yes, he could. Quite a few thousand others made it. -
Never mind them. Bring back the Royal Scot biscuit (and no, I'm not trying to make a reference to a recently locked thread).

The Wal that’s in the Band Aid video… up for sale…
Steve Browning replied to TrevorR's topic in Bass Guitars
John Taylor played it then (and presumably) owned it. He subsequently gave it to John at Live Aid. -
I used to own a Boogie 2x18 that was supposedly made for him.

I've decided to leave it to Pino, after all. This a Sterling SUB Stingray that has been fitted with a Nordstrand MM4.2 pickup and Retrovibe Stinger pre-amp. It's in very good condition and is a really good bass. The original parts will come with it and it will be safely packaged (it comes in a good gig bag) if it needs to be posted. It weighs in at a very reasonable 9.4lbs (no, the scales aren't stuck!). You are welcome to come and try it and I am happy to drive a reasonable distance to hand it over. Price dropped to £300 for a great package.

I tried, but a Stingray is just not for me. This is a really good playing OLP Stingray that has been very well upgraded to include a Nordstrand MM4.2 pickup and a Retrovibe Stinger pre-amp. I have to say that I had very managed expectations when I bought it, but it is a superb bass. Not a bad weight, too, at 9.4lbs. I am down near Portsmouth, for those that want to give it a go. I am happy to travel a reasonable distance to save delivery, but will pack it fairly safely if I have to post it. Postage costs will be in addition to the quoted price (which is what I paid for it). This is the perfect way to dip your toes in the Stingray water, or to have a very capable back up.

What would be your bass gig of choice from all of history?
Steve Browning replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
Easy for me. John Deacon's rig from the first tours. 3 x Acoustic 371s, 2 x Hiwatt heads and 2 x 4x12s. D'oh GIG, not rig (berk). Same answer though. JD for Queen's early tours. -
Could you leave it to me in your will, please?
-
Ok. Time to take some pictures and get the ads written.

Yeah., Exactly my position. I had thought of a Status fretless neck for the OLP but it's flogging a dead horse, in my hands.

Yonks ago I had an early Stingray (they hadn't been around long at the time, so it wasn't early then). Being a dyed-in-the-wool Pbass man I never really got on with it. I sort of liked the sound but didn't enjoy playing it - the ergonomics were all wrong for someone used to anchoring their thumb on a Pbass pickup. Anyway, time passed and I thought I'd dip my toes in again. I bought a Sterling SUB and an OLP. Both have ended up with Nordstrand MM4.2 pickups and Retrovibe Stinger pre-amps. They both play and sound great. Of course, the old niggle returns and so away they will go. I'm sure I'm not alone. Every so often I'll give something that didn't work, in the past, another go, only to find it still doesn't work. I will be getting back into supporting mode and moving them on. It's a pity as both are very nice basses. The OLP is really superb. Oh well ...

Unhappily, the guitarist in my first (college) band has recently joined the drummer in the great band in the sky. Both were my age (although the drummer had suffered with MND for many years). Someone has just posted some pictures from 1979 on Facebook. Here I am showing my earliest attempt at reproducing John Deacons rig. I have an 18 and two 4x12s (they're even Sound City). The bass was my first Precision - where are you now S749320? The perm earned me the nickname Phyllis.
