  1. People can get precious about it. After a few months, the local paper told my first band to change our name. Can't think why, the original Beatles hadn't been active for about 7 years at the time.
  2. The tuners are not reverse wind, Kev, they're the standard later type. Period correct.
  3. I did consider those, but didn't know how long the 'stick' would last. I do have other basses that I use that would benefit. I guess the oldies could have those, so they can be removed when necessary.
  4. I went for large white on some and the Luminlays were the larger green ones - all on rosewood fingerboards.
  5. I've had larger side markers fitted to some of my Precisions, and Luminlay markers added to others for the same reason. I don't get on with maple boards unhappily.
  6. I've never really tried any Gibson basses. I did use an Epiphone Rivoli for a music video, but that was just miming to the track. They have always seemed to have neck dive issues, with which I can't be bothered. I'd love to be cool enough to get away with a thunderbird but a) I'm just not cool enough, and b) I play with a guy who played with Pete Way. Pretty much kills any ambitions there! Otherwise, not really played any of the usual boutique brands. If I'm brutally honest, I simply have no interest. They don't do anything for me either aesthetically or sonically. Similarly, no Warwick, Lakland, Sandberg, Yamaha, Ibanez or the like. Dead boring me, but seemingly happy to be so.
  7. These are wondeful instruments. I had an ash bodied one, too. I think the scratchplate may also be a change, as these came with a black scratchplate originally. Doesn't detract from a terrific bass though. GLWTS.
  8. I know Captain Rumble has one. I use the TT 800 and don't miss my all-valve amps at all.
  9. Just finished a short tour where we used my PA for a couple of gigs. I originally a pair of Alto 15 tops with a 12 sub, but decided to change the 15s for 12s (after reading advice on here). The system is now 2 x Alto TS312s and a TS312S sub. Monitoring is again all Alto, with 3 x 10s and the spare TS312. Mixer is an Alto Live 1604. Slight overkill for the regular band but the separate monitor mixes are useful. I have to say we were astonished at the clarity of the system. Everything was handled easily. Was unable to position the sub according to the recommendations of our experts but wasn't disappointed with the result.
  10. Technically I have 4. Main rig - Mesa TT800 + (2) Mesa Subway 15 cabs Small gig/rehearsal rig - Mesa Walkabout 15 combo Taking to a mate's house rig - GK MB150E In the music room (well, broom cupboard more like) rig - Ampeg Micro-CL (more for the visual joke than anything).
  11. Great news. I'm really pleased that you're so happy with it. All the more so, given your patience.
  12. Absolutely yellow. It was next to the yellow flight case it was stored in.
  13. I actually saw one in the flesh yesterday. Not set up, but there it was nevertheless. Casemates rehearsal studio in Portsmouth. Only ever saw pictures up until now.
  14. I seem to recall reading that he kept a replaced kneecap on his mantlepiece.
  15. That's dreadful. Sorry to read that. It's not a good feeling when you've been ripped off by people associated with this forum. I appreciate the warning.
  16. Interesting story. I have had a couple of flirtations with a Stingray. The ergonomics just don't work for me. Being a plucker, I anchor my thumb on the pickup cover and I find the slight increase in tension (or whatever it is) when anchored on the Stingray pickup too awkward, against a lifetime being used to a Precision.
  17. By way of encouragement (and in addition to my sympathies) I can offer you this ... Sometime in the mid 90's, I was on a UK tour and playing at a small music venue (Sturminster Newton, as it happens). A guy had watched me set up and stayed as we soundchecked. Afterwards he came up to me and complimented me on the sound and the rig (my original Bass 400 and Diesel 2x15 - got to get the plug in). I asked him if he was a bass player too. He replied that he had been until 16 days previously. I told him that that was a very precise answer. With that, he held up his left hand, that was heavily bandaged. 16 days before, he had taken off the top half of all 4 fingers on a band saw. I learned later that they had had a collection for him and commissioned a special left handed bass and he was playing again, swapping to left handed playing. That's not to try and out-do your traumatic (and doubtless worrying) injury, but to demonstrate that where's there's a will, there's a way. Very best of luck to you. As has been said earlier, let Tommy Iommi be your inspiration.
  18. Reminds me of shifting my first 2x15 in a Mini (an old one) which necessitated taking the back seat cushion out and it just about got in. Amp filled the boot and the bass had the passenger footwell.
  19. I absoluterly agree with this (and have said the same thing many times). Another factor is the studio itself. My last recording was at Rimshot in Kent, and the whole vibe of the place, and the attitude of the owner/producer just inspired all of us to just relax and play without thinking of the red light being on. Not really encountered such a vibe before. It made all the difference.
  20. https://www.bonhams.com/auction/30318/the-rory-gallagher-collection/ This one, maybe? If you can wait until October.
  21. These have done sterling service for a little while now. In very good condition with no isuues (except the tightest fit covers!). Selling because we've gone to a pair of 12's and a sub. They were used last night (in a decent sized pub) and sounded really good (as they always have). They're taking up space so now £200 for the pair. Alto themselves say this: 550W continuous, 1100W peak Class D power 15-inch (381 mm) LF driver, 2.5-inch (63.5 mm) high-temperature voice coil 1-inch (25.4 mm) neodymium HF driver with precision waveguide Bi-amplified design with precision active crossover and EQ Integrated 2-channel mixer with dual XLR 1/4-inch combo mic/line inputs and independent level controls Custom engineered high-efficiency class D amplifiers with passive cooling design – No fan means the speaker runs cleaner, quieter and has greater long-term reliability Ground-Lift switch Contour switch for increased EQ control Electronic clip, thermal and transducer overdrive protection Delivery is a bit impractical, but I am happy to drive a reasonable distance if it helps.
  22. Yes. I have a pair of them. Luckily, he's a mate (we play in a band together).
  23. My 'oldies' still come out, now and again. More generally, the SVLs do the touring with me and other gigs will get a couple of the other basses. These days, the choice is more about how easily I can see the fret markers! I, too, have done the pre-CBS thing. I wouldn't bother with another one now. My '66 is way better than any of the pre-CBS basses I've owned (or played) - same parts likely as not. The important thing is playability. My other basses (including bitsas) play extremely well and cost a fraction of the price. For me, there's simply no point in owning/using one, when you can achieve the same without the vast outlay. Of course, we each have our own (and valid) viewpoint.
  24. I own the PA and the van. All I need to do is ingratiate myself with some talented, but cloth-eared musicians. Done that on a couple of occasions now! I don't charge for use of either, don't really feel comfortable charging mates for things. Tend to be the same with anything music related. Guess I'll never be rich.
