  1. I think I agree with you. I think the type of instrument you play also has a bearing. In my (old guard) simple way, I always think bass players are either Precision bass players, or Jazz bass players. By that, I mean that a bass that gives more definition (for want of a better expression) invites the player to play more notes. That's a massive generalisation, I accept, but I think there's a lot of truth in it. That's not to denigrate anybody at all. It's just what I've observed over the years. Additionally, people have their own definition of the role in the band and how it is achieved. Again, there is no right or wrong answer. It's entirely down to the individual.
  2. I wish I were closer. That would be wonderful.
  3. Sgt. Rock by XTC.
  4. That, my friend, is what a bass guitar should look like! 🙂 I always reckon the best Fender period is 1966 to 1973/4. Really great instruments but not at the crazy pre-CBS prices (although they're catching up).
  5. I just don't understand why people feel they have to critique someone else's opinion? I didn't say it was all I could play and no-one tells me what I have to play. You disagree, that's fine. Let me just check I can cope with your derision. (One nanosecond later) - yes. I can.
  6. I'm going to be flamed for this but there are two serial culprits (IMHO) .... many of NWR's bass lines with Wilko, and John Entwistle. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Norman Watt-Roy in the Blockheads etc but I find many of those Wilko bass lines too far too busy. I find the same with JE. I'm going to be in a minority of one, but the question was asked.
  7. Absolutely. It's whether it's correct or not that matters. I was just giving a possible explanation for people to draw attention to it. For all I know, lefties may be the other way round. I posted a general question about the science of strings a while back, but we obviously don't have any string experts on here. Maybe I'll drop Rotosound a line and ask them.
  8. I had one of these a while back. They look amazing in the flesh and the build quality of Fender Japan basses is consistently top notch. I have bought every single Fender Japan Pbass without trying it first and never, once, been remotely disappointed. GLWTS.
  9. I think the idea is that, according to Fender, that's set the wrong way round. The adjustment is supposed to be back from the thinner string above (or below) by the gauge of the string. "Now adjust the distance of the second-string saddle back from the first saddle, using the gauge of the second string as a measurement. For example, If the second string is .011" (0.3 mm), you would move the second-string saddle back .011" (0.3 mm) from the first saddle. Move the third saddle back from the second saddle using the gauge of the third string as a measurement. The fourth-string saddle should be set parallel with the second-string saddle. Proceed with the fifth and sixth saddles with the same method used for strings two and three." That's not saying yours isn't perfect but your set-up is contrary to the advice.
  10. ... or making love to a beautiful woman, perhaps?
  11. I think that's probably true in most cases. An isolated bass track sounds nothing like the final, mixed, product.
  12. Maybe they're trying to move to your area on the cheap. 🙂
  13. Cocktail sticks? I thought they were for cleaning your teeth!!
  14. Filling and redrilling? I thought that was what matchsticks were for!!
  15. I am too conscious of the damage I could do by getting it wrong (however easy others find it).
  16. So that's two things we disagree about then. 🙂
  17. Impressive. I guess you are capable of designing and building all your own amps and loudspeakers?
  18. I have always shied away from doing anything (lack of confidence) but I invested in the Fender Bass Haynes Manual and that enabled me to tackle things. I have used a tech on a couple of occasions since, but certainly tackle things I didn't used to.
  19. Yes. This was in the basement of the Ecuadorian Embassy. 🙂
  20. Mine hasn't, no. John Deacon on Queen 2 from the moment I heard it, to now.
  21. Only sit for our acoustic gigs. I usually perch nonchalantly on the amp!
  22. Mind you, at least there's no more kicking myself for missing out on a great looking bitsa.
  23. I'm going to have to wait for the report before I can comment. 🙂
