There is so much choice of great lightweight rigs around these days.
I am from the same era and am delighted with my own lightweight Mesa Boogie rig.
You don't need to invest as much as I have to achieve the result you want. Try stuff and make up your own mind.
I don't want to argue but you've only said what you weren't using up to now.
I seem to recall an early interview with Mark King somewhere he talks about the ergonomics of a Fender not being conducive to slap bass. Didn't Jaydee basses have some groove on them, to accommodate the plucking by the right hand? probably totally wrong but I have that vague memory.
I'm just interested in what you were playing and the gigs you were doing. You seem to have an interesting history. I was into a band called Upp at this kind of time. No slapping involved, so not really anything relevant to the thread (and Stephen Amazing - bass player - used a Jazz with flats.
No, an idea of what you were using would be interesting. It could have been an Audition but that's unimportant.
@Bean9seventycan you tell us a bit about your history and gear? You will probably say you already have but I'd be interested to see it all in one, precise post (which reads as an insult but isn't meant to be).
Nothing massively exciting. I have a Sterling SUB Stingray that has a Retrovibe Stinger pre-amp and I just thought I'd get a Nordstrand MM4.2 to add to it. Not really necessary as the Stinger does a great job with the stock pickup. I intend to get another SUB and swap out the electrics for the Nordstrand/Stinger setup currently in my OLP.
I'll then flog the OLP with the Sterling pre-amp and pickup and include the original OLP electrics too (passive VVT).

I do hope no-one falls for any of these 'bargains'.
I can only offer you this.
I have moved from Bass 400 to Bass 400+ (both all valve) to M-Pulse 600 (valve/mos-fet) through to TT800 (valve/digital) without losing my core sound (to my ears). Do not fear the change. Of course, I have kept it 'in the family' so there's common dna, but I have proved (to myself) that you won't lose any of the punch.
Which elicited this reply:

think the music industry thing was a drink too big & a sandwich too small, for me especially

Off topic? Have we worked out what the topic actually is?
It would be great if we could have a clear post setting out exactly what is being said. Any attempt to engage with the OP to garner such a response is met with unintelligible ranting (to my feeble brain).
