  1. Not necessarily (the usual answer of the tax professional). A supplier will charge local tax if they're registered for VAT locally - in all likelihood, in this scenario, if they have exceeded the distance selling threshold. What happens to ours after Brexit might be interesting.
  2. No, that won't happen because of the transit documentation that accompanies the goods. I can absolutely promise you that.
  3. Not exactly, Thomann (poor example) will have exceeded the distance selling threshold and are VAT registered in the UK I suspect. VAT is charged according to the place of supply rules and is where the supplier is established, unless selling to a taxable person in the country of destination. Either way, you are definitely only charged VAT once. Duty rates can be around the 4-5% mark and VAT is calculated on the value of the goods, the Duty and transport costs so the goods will be more expensive (depending on the rate).
  4. You are charged VAT anyway, either from the seller or HMRC when the goods come into the UK. Thomann (for example) charge you German VAT (as a private UK individual). After 1/1/21 they charge no VAT but HMRC will charge 20% UK VAT + whatever Duty there is when the stuff comes into the UK. Same as any import into the UK (which is what it will become).
  5. I recall the Bass Doc used the 4 ply blank material from WD Music. He made about 3 for me and they were all corkers. Tort plate reproductions are my bette noir in that many of them look awful (and the Fender ones are almost the worst).
  6. Well. Things have taken a spectacular turn. With the assistance of an exceedingly good chum (a Mesa endorsee) and the artist relations chap in the US, I am now super proud to be an official Mesa Boogie endorsee. I'm a bit too stunned to add anything to that!!
  7. John Deacon (oh wait, that's in my dreams!!).
  8. I'd rather spend 200 quid less on the Musicmaster guitar he's selling.
  9. No probs Jon. One other thing possibly worthy of note. You will see the pole pieces sit proud of the cover. For me (as someone who hooks their thumb onto the cover when they play) that meant there was less purchase for my thumb. I got round this by putting some cut up beer mat either side of the magnets so the cover was flush. That gives you more room for your thumb. The sound etc is completely unaffected.
  10. Trying to remember if I had to fettle anything although my basses all received new scratchplates from a chap here who isn't around any more. A bit of filing might be necessary (easily done).
  11. That actually did reduce it for a while. Interesting.
  12. Hade no choice at the time but ... 1953 Precision (0189) 1966 Slab Precision(138700) 1966 Jazz (dot and bound) 1977 Precision (S749320) - my first Precision.
  13. I have my late father's 1937 Selmer Balanced Action tenor. A lovely instruments, that I can get a scale of C major out of!!
  14. Dare I suggest Summer Of 69. I know, but it works.
  15. I've had a number of these basses and they have all been, without exception, terrific instruments. Every one was bought blind but you can have enough confidence in the build quality to take it for granted (IMHO).
  16. Mesa Boogie/Bass Gallery - I've told this tale before but it's appropriate for this thread. I bought a pair of Subway 15" cabs as soon as they came out. Due to the way production works there, I received the first one in November and the second in the February after. I thought I'd wait until I had the pair before I ran the full rig up and immediately noticed that there was a rattle on the first delivered cab. I checked the tightness of all the screws (it was similar to a rattling grille) but it persisted. It became apparent that the fault lay with the speaker. Gently pushing on the cone gave no indication of an issue there (I was checking to feel if there was any grating from a misalignment). Eventually, it was evident that the speaker was the issue and Mesa agreed to change the speaker. They arranged to send a new speaker over so they could be swapped over. The cab was bought through Bass Gallery and the speaker was due on a Saturday. This was the same day that the guy in the shop was going ion holiday. Entirely for my benefit, he came into the shop and waited, with me, for it to arrive. When it did (already close to the time he needed to leave) we removed the old one, only to find the rattle was caused by a block of 4 staples that had fallen out of the gun (the operator had clearly refilled it during the process of fixing the wadding). On removing the staples, it was apparent all was now fine. We put the cab back together and I went on my way - complete with the spare speaker they had sent over. Given the cost of the cabs I shudder to think how much the speaker was but the level of customer service was off the scale from both Mesa and the Bass Gallery. The chap put his holiday at risk in order to help a customer.
  17. No problem. Your input is always very much appreciated. I suspect we have a pretty much identical love of the brand. Things may be taking a spectacular turn but I will keep quiet in case I jinx it. I did let my disappointment get the better of me but my allegiance is as strong as ever.
  18. Or maybe some other 4 letter word beginning with 's' and ending 'g'. 🙂
  19. My late Dad suffered (although not with deafness) too. He was actually awarded a pay-out. He had been in Lancaster bombers and they referred to the condition as 'Merlin ear'.
  20. Can I draw your attention to the 'don't comment if you haven't read thread'?
  21. Yes, would be nice to have a solution. As well as the high p[itched whistle I have a low volume 'dawn chorus' which gets a bit irritating. I tried those Flare Audio things (only 20 quid) but they did nothing for me either way (making it better or worse as opposed to how I stuck them in my ear - before any of you lot make the joke!!).
  22. To be clear, I don't watch these things. I find it almost objectionable that someone would be arrogant enough to think that anyone wants to see how poorly they compare to the great they are mourning. I will make a single exception for Snowy White to tribute Peter Green (he'll be so pleased).
  23. Exactly my feelings and definitely in respect 'dedicating/tributing' by sports people/clubs.
