Pedalboard build... your essential pedals?
spiltmilk_2000 replied to spiltmilk_2000's topic in Effects
I wasn't going to list what's already on there but maybe I should... I have the DHA valve eq drive, mxr envelope filter, dark glass super symmetry compressor, boss super octave and tuner... Think a fun fuzz pedal and delay might be interesting... synth pedal maybe? Keep the ideas coming ;-) -
Hey all, in the process of building my first pedalboard. Up until now I've always been a bass, cable, amp kinda guy but I fancy some fun! So, my board still has a fair amount of space currently so I thought I'd ask for suggestions from you more knowledgable types... what pedal could you not be without?? Interested in specifics and more general suggestions to check out. All suggestions gratefully received... doesn't need to be genre specific... just after any pedal that makes you smile when you step on it! Looking forward to your suggestions guys!

International Pop Overthrow festival, Liverpool
spiltmilk_2000 replied to MoonBassAlpha's topic in General Discussion
I've played this festival lots of times. Firstly, never been paid or sold much merch etc... you usually get to play two sets across two venues... decent crowd as its all free entry and plenty of music types and walk up punters about. The standard of bands is generally pretty decent and some are outstanding. My advice is to treat it as my band does. Boys jolly away from wives and young children, a few drinks, a couple of shows and a good hang in a vibrant city with musicians and cool musical history everywhere. Have also made good friends with musicians from all around the world from Spain to Japan... have fun! But don't expect to make money! Should just add I've only ever played weekends so can't vouch for week nights but knowing the Matthew street area of Liverpool I can't imagine it would be quiet... -

I've been loving this band for about a year now and seeing them in London a few months back was truly amazing! I was drawn in by the bass lines but vocals, keys, guitar, drums are all off the scale! I've been trying to learn some of joe darts lines but the tempos always seem to be a little out of reach for my limited ability. :-( think I'll need to start a tribute band called halfpeck and play them all half time! :-)

I'm in an amplification pickle. Help........
spiltmilk_2000 replied to vinorange's topic in General Discussion
I've tried contacting them and it's gone a bit quiet........Not sure if they are still trading. I still don't know whether it may be worth just getting a lightweight set up. No pre / power amp, just a nice powerful light head with clear punchy light cab or am I in fantasy land?
Try contacting mike Walsh of purple chilli through his zoot bass Facebook page. He's pretty active there these days... -
All jamming or gigging projects considered from rock / funk / blues / country / jazz / originals / covers... All about great songs with great melodies so all styles considered. (Oh, not metal. Sorry!) Lead / Bvs depending on the complexity of the bass parts... Decent gear... Committed... Own hair... Despite being solidly middle aged. Would particularly love to get into playing jazz so looking for anyone to jam / rehearse with in this genre but patience required on your part if the tempos get bright! Pm me!

Music shops -any wonder they're going under?
spiltmilk_2000 replied to Jakester's topic in General Discussion
Was in digital village a few years back buying stuff for with a band I was in... 2 keyboards, 4 pa speakers, mics and stands... Already rung up on the till... The guitarist then decided he'd like to try a new fender amp. When we asked the sales guy if he could audition it he said "I'm not getting it from the store room unless you definitely buy it" when we explained we'd like to hear it first he said "can't you just imagine what it sounds like?" Needless to say I've never been back to "the imaginarium" since... -
Sorry to hijack but does anyone have any experience of the gruv gear gig blade??
-
I've had a mono double gig bag for about 10 years. It was expensive but it still looks like new!

Why did you choose your luthier?
spiltmilk_2000 replied to BassApprentice's topic in General Discussion
I chose a zoot bass for a number of reasons. Firstly I like to support my local businesses. If you don't use them you lose them! Secondly I'd had mike do some set ups and repairs and while at his workshop had always marvelled at the instruments he was building, his attention to detail and the immense knowledge of the guy. So when I decided I wanted a bass combining the best of my vintage instruments with something a bit more modern I knew where to go. I loved that I could choose everything from my woods, number of frets, headstock and body shapes, hardware, pick ups, neck profile, exact measurements of my compound radius etc etc. I have loved the fact I've been able to go to the workshop to oversee the exact shaping of the body contours and neck profile and make sure it all feels perfect and comfortable for me. It's not yet finished but if it's not all I hoped for (it will be!) I guess it's only me to blame! One example of the kind of attention to detail is the way mike went through all the neck woods he had to find one that rang a perfect 5th above the body to ensure the neck and body really sing together. I guess the only downside of such a build is its so specific to me I doubt it'll have much of a 2nd hand value but I'm certainly not planning on selling it on! -
For me last nights show was an absolute game changer... Joe darts solos are of course gratuitous by nature but the groove NEVER suffers. Just as danceable as the rest of his playing. Not sure I'd ever be able to dance to a Wooten solo! ;-) However the vocal talent on show was what got me the most. I had an idea how good katzman and Stanley were but the warm up, joey Dosik, took me totally by surprise. Simply jaw dropping from start to finish.

Vulfpeck @ Hollywood bowl, London, last night...
spiltmilk_2000 posted a topic in General Discussion
Anyone else catch this gig last night. Naturally vulfpeck and Joe Dart were off the scale! But the warm up... Joey Dosik! What an immense musical talent. It was a weird night. At the end of the show people were so shell shocked by the quality on show that many were in a daze. I was actually hugged by two very emotional complete strangers! Totally unforgettable show... -

Hi guys, just wondered if anyone has any experience of this ebook? I'm thinking of downloading while its at the discounted price of £33 but that still seems expensive when I'll want to print and bind it myself. (I know how old fashioned that is!). So can anyone tell me if its good value compared to other more traditional books on the subject. Being familiar with joes playing and teaching I'm sure it'll be excellent content wise but not sure if it offers any different approaches or if it has a particularly huge page count. Thanks for any advice!

Trade value £20.00 Have a White scratchplate and hipshot tuner (ultra lite?) from a skyline daryl Jones lakland 4 string. I sold the bass last year with an upgraded s/plate and drop d tuner fitted and at the time couldn't find the original parts to include in the sale. Ive contacted the purchaser who now has no use for them so I thought I'd offer them up here in case anyone can use them. £10 each plus p&p... I can add pics when I get home tonight. Thanks

Reverse wound reverse polarity on a jazz bass?
spiltmilk_2000 replied to spiltmilk_2000's topic in Repairs and Technical
So swapped the wires on one pickup and to my ears they now sound better and I guess that's what matters ;-) Thanks guys! -
So, I fitted a set of bareknuckle pickups on my jazz and the neck is rwrp. With both pickup volumes on full there is a significant drop off in bass frequencies and output and I'm assuming this is due to phase cancellation. If I roll one of the volumes down a little the output and bass frequencies return. So, is this how they are supposed to be? Are they designed to give the option of an out of phase tone or should I just swap the wires around on one of the pickups (this solves the issue). I know some guitarists like an out of phase tone but it doesn't really seem to work for bass so I wondered if I've done something wrong? Thanks for any advice! Russ
