1. Set of DR Low Riders 7 way Hercules bass stand Charlie Parker and miles Davis bass clef Omni-books Pair of bare knuckle jazz pups It was a good day :-)
2. If no-one has a 4 string set to trade then I also accept cash! £25 shipped fair?
3. If it's for general theory the AB guide is good. If it's for GCSE then there are specific books available covering the exact syllabus for each exam board. You'll need to know if he's doing edexel, ocr, aqa etc
4. Great resource! Thanks for sharing Tom!
5. Trade for 4 string set! Have a set of Dean Markley Blue Steel strings, 45-128, new and unopened. I don't have a 5 string so rather than use 4 and bin the low B I thought Id see if anyone wanted to do a straight swap for a 4 string set of a decent brand... preferably 45-100 gauge. Drop me a PM if interested!
6.
That's a top looking bass! So, for the benefit of a Fender-virgin (me!) this is a new bass right? The antique finish is added? Where is it made and who did you order it from? sorry for all the questions just a really interesting bass....
Yes a new bass... Made in Devon! If you look in the gear porn forum there's a show us your limelight thread with many more mages of really naughty looking basses. For me the relic job is a huge cut above the fender road worn series but not quite as good as fender custom shop. Still, a cudtom order to this spec from fender would probably cost 3.5 times that of a limelight. Suffice to say I'm very happy with it :-)
7. Im a member of SBL and get a lot from it. Really like some of the guest seminars etc. There are enough courses on there to keep me busy for years!
8.
Now I have to say - It was and still is undoubtedly the best looking bass I've ever worn - and it sounded pretty good too - but it was SO uncomfortable to play when standing up I couldn't believe it - Gutted wasn't the word. No arm chamfer = Pain when you're use to Basses that have them (they're there for a reason!). Also some songs were played with a pick and I kept catching my pick on the pickup surround which is MASSIVE and stands proud of the body. With hindsight I could have probably persevered with it and maybe I could have found a way to adapt my playing style to suit the guitar, but at the time I really didn't think I should have to do that. So to summarize form my experience - Find any one to start with and make sure you play it on a strap and whilst standing up - Then if you get on with them, I would go and try a few others to find the one that's suits you the best..HTH.
+1! I was flying to a gig in Edinburgh and a kind friend who lived that way said he'd loan me a P bass for the night. When he arrived, for some reason he had brought a Ric instead. I was excited and worried in equal measures. Excited because I'd always loved the idea of Rics, the look, the tone etc but had never tried one. Worried because I was sure after the gig I'd have a very expensive itch that would need scratching By the time I'd played a 45 minute set I had no interest in owning one any more. For whatever reason I found it so uncomfortable to play. I was changing strap height between every song, for some reason I was digging in more than normal and it gave me blisters but most annoyingly I found the pickup cover to be right in the sweet spot where I wanted to pluck. Anyway, since then, Ive played another friends with the pup cover removed (whilst seated) and had no issue at all. Loved it! Morale of the story? make sure you try a Ricci before buying one! :-)
9. wow! you've had a bargain there! congrats!
10. The eagle has landed! Another cracker from Mark. 66 Jazz in Shoreline Gold, b&b rosewood neck, and both parchment and tort s/ps which I can't decide between! What would you do? My only grumble is that its such a great colour but it doesn't come out in pics properly... Looks gold in the flesh but almost silver in photos! 11. Seem to have been having a few of these NBDs of late but this one feels all the sweeter due to the wait since placing my order back in August. It's a Limelight 66 Jazz in a lovely shoreline gold which, annoyingly, I can't capture properly in a photo as it just looks silver :-( I'm sure the relic job will divide opinion but I'm really pleased with the look, the tone, and (after a few adjustments to get the set up to my personal taste) the feel too. The neck is simply sublime and really feels worn in rather than just sanded like some relics I've played. I couldn't decide on the scratch plate colour so go tort and parchment made. Which would you use??
12. For me it's the Beatles every time. OK, so I guess I'm leaving Ringo out of the equation but Macca at his pinnacle was simply astounding vocally.
13. You trying to land me in more hot water happy jack! :-)
14. Thanks Douglas... My post wasn't intended to breach any rules. And I had no idea how to contact the mods elsewhere. Sorry all! It won't happen again...
15. Hi mods, posted in the bass guitar section earlier and it appears to have been removed? I guess I breached a rule but if someone can let me know by pm so I don't do it again that would be great. Sorry and thanks! Russ
16. Can't speak about 60s p basses but I have a 76... It weighs a ton, has a neck pocket that looks like it was cut by a blind man, but sounds and feels better than any other precision I have played. Go figure!
17. Thanks so much guys! That basso ridiculous link is fantastic! I know what you mean re transcribing, and will be transcribing some versions for sure but it's really nice to have something related to help me work on my sight reading too. Thanks to you all for the help!
18. Sweet bejeeezus! Just had some pics through from mark... My bass is finished and should be with me by the weekend. It's another stunner from limelight (imho) Pics to follow shortly :-)))
19. I'm in a similar place with getting into jazz fairly recently. Always found it alluring and interesting but never really played any as it just seemed too inaccessible for someone of my limited brain capacity. However since taking the plunge my playing and my knowledge of the fretboard and harmony have increased exponentially and I'm having more fun than I thought I would! I would suggest all the classics as a starting point. Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, john coletrane, thelonius monk, cannonball adderly etc... Some amazingly lyrical bass playing but I'm really enjoying transcribing some sax and horn lines that really get you out of your comfort zone. The biggest problem I'm finding is getting to the standard where I can play with others competently and confidently. It's going to be a long road but a surprisingly enjoyable one!
20. Thanks so much guys! Playing much better in the first position now!
21.
My wee boy is right into Paw Patrol at the moment. Super catchy theme song and based on green day type pop rock guitar sounds. Bearable.
Paw patrol theme was written and performed by a friend of mine called Scott Simmonds. He used to be in a band called the argument. Worth checking out if you like power pop / early Ben folds five...
22. Hi all, I'm currently working on two long term challenges... getting my walking to be a bit more refined and improving my sight reading and I was hoping some of you might be able to help me work on the two together. Ive been working on the classic Autumn Leaves changes using upper and lower chromatic approaches, scalic approaches etc but am struggling to play any new (to me) transitions. Feels a little like Im going through the motions.... So I was wondering if anyone had any transcriptions of how any of the greats tackled these changes that I can analyse? I know I could/should listen and figure this stuff for myself but a) it would be good reading practice for me and I want to spend the time with a bass in my hand rather than a pencil and paper if at all possible (sorry if that comes across as lazy!) Anyways, if anyone has any transcriptions you're willing to share I'd be extremely grateful! Thanks!
23. It's a beauty David but so is that CS! If it does get moved on at a time when I'm feeling flush I might be interested... Keep me in the loop my friend! :-)
