  1. The black one is just wrong! This is the wrong way up (for most people), but a detail from my 1980 Stingray
  2. I saw them live about that time (cod-pieces and all). I think they were the loudest band I have ever seen (including Motorhead etc etc). My ears were distorting in the Hammersmith Odeon.
  3. Looking at what's available on't internet, maybe my recollection is fuzzy (if not flanged!)
  4. And my recollection of MXR flangers from the time of New Gold Dream was that they were a lot more basic than the one you see now. I remember asking Derek about his effects then, and he said 'he just used an MXR Flanger' (and an SVT).
  5. I don't know how to copy old threads from the site...maybe the Mods can help, but this is quite funny from 15 years ago! (and it doesn't quite tell you the answer!) Basschat Derek Forbes Interview By Linus27, July 6, 2010 in General Discussion
  6. There has been some really interesting stuff coming up lately around three of the original Simple Minds line up getting together. I have finally found out how Derek Forbes played some of the original Simple Minds Riffs watching this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w79gmTDXJTM Hopefully the link works. If not, it was the book launch/masterclass of 'A Very Simple Mind' in Walthamstow (of all places)
  7. If you look on Nedcom.nl/WAL and look up PB 1757 from 1982, you will find it
  8. It was Tulip Wood, but the distinct stripes in this Shedua reminded me of it (a bit) His was older too
  9. It has a bit of the Mick Karns about it (although I think his had lines??). Is it of a similar vintage?
  10. So left handed basses (what ever you think of Fender Mustangs) usually go at a discount. We are talking Wal prices (plus) for a mass produced, left handed short-scale. I hope the purchaser has a monster effects board.
  11. I'm liking the music and the turntable (which appears to be worth more than quite a lot of my basses on its own!). How did get the sound on the vid?
  12. I'm tempted to say "Luxury....in my day....we would have dreamt of being left at side o't road" but it sounded b....y hard work!
  13. Theres also a Westone Thunder leftie on the big guitar auction mentioned elsewhere on the site (the exchange on vintage fender mustangs)
  14. Thanks. I think the one Sting is playing has a very slightly different controls layout and different looking pickups (and it's fretless!), but they are both called the same thing.
  15. So what is the fretless Sting is holding on the cover of Zenyatta Mondatta
  16. We played for years with Hugh McKenna, who had been the keyboards player in SAHB for ages (we still miss him today.....he died just before the start of Covid). He described a support gig they did in the States, where, just before going on stage he had been offered a particularly potent spliff (he said 'he was a particularly greedy pig in those days'). Anyway said spliff had a bit too powerful a hallucinogenic effect. They were kicking off their set with 'Give my regards tot he Chef' (see vid of 'normal' performance below). For some reason, instead of the atmospheric build-up line, Hugh decided to play 'three blind mice' instead of his normal introduction, much to the incomprehension of the rest of the band.

  18. Bring out your inner Alan Lancaster!
  19. They really are lovely basses aren't they. So reliable, stable, good looking and most of all, great sounding.
  20. You're not planning on putting them on the stove are you?
  21. In the words of Dylan Thomas: "Oh what'll the neighbours say?" 🤔
  22. But Paul's bass was white (ish)....
  23. The looks of this bass are tremendous, if not particularly faithful to an original Jazz https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/product/nash-guitars-jb-63-sonic-blue-medium-aged-left-handed-pre-owned/
  24. THe mystery deepens!
  25. Jaco trashed it. The bass of doom is the careful reconstruction of the bits as I understand it.
