Not a P bass if it has a J neck?

Do you prefer the sound of plucking or rolling?
musicbassman replied to TJ1's topic in General Discussion
If you're somehow 'plucking from underneath' (and not as a part of slap and pop technique) then I'd suggest you are using a very unusual technique akin to fingerpicking on the guitar, which most bass players wouldn't recognise. Please tell us more ! 😮 -

Now I'm confused. You'll have to explain what you mean. -
Bought a Vanderkley cab from Mark. Top guy, excellent communications, all good Thanks Mark 🙂

Bass player's interest in how many different basses he's taken to the pub gig = 100% ! 😁 Other members of the band's interest - 20% 🙁 Punters interest = 0% 😑

"I'm no David Beckham" - bass version
musicbassman replied to Nail Soup's topic in General Discussion
"So, you play in a band, do you ?" "Yes, but I'm no lead singer or guitarist" "Drummer ?" "No" "Keyboards ?" "No" "So you must be the roadie, then ?" 🥺 -
So, take a very talented guitarist called Joe Parrish and give him the complete scores for the incredibly complex 'Rite of Spring' by Stravinsky. And then lock him away in a studio for a year or two. And he comes up with something so seemingly impossible you can't believe it. The sheer dedication alone is jaw dropping. And note for note, it's absolutely accurate to the original score. Enjoy.

It doesn’t have to be in English to be good, does it?

Here's Pino D'Angio from 1981 with 'Ma quale idea' Does that massive bass line sound familiar ? Too good a bass line to waste. This Madison Avenue track is from 1999 😋 -
Mr Brightside - The hit that just won't die
musicbassman replied to Nail Soup's topic in General Discussion
I'm well into my sixties, and Mr Brightside is................. a beautifully crafted piece of pop rock dealing with one of the oldest of love emotions, jealousy. I think some of the complainers on here may be suffering a bit from jealousy themselves, and secretly wishing they'd written it themselves. And if I'd written it, I'd certainly be very proud to tell everyone 🙂 -
Earliest Ever Footage of Slap Bass
musicbassman replied to Bean9seventy's topic in General Discussion
I hope you're not being serious. That's a song called 'The lady in my Life' from Michael Jackson's Thriller album, which was recorded in 1982. The bass player was Steve Lukather. 🙂 However, it would be interesting to find the earliest genuine footage of the genesis of slap playing. 👍 -
Not wishing to rain on your parade, best wishes to you - but I can't imagine this has gone down too well with the neighbours. Did you get planning permission for this ?

Nicely played. Sounds like a mashup between some standard MOR 70's soul and Vulfpecks 'Back Pocket'

And the prize for 'most sinister guitar' goes to...
musicbassman replied to binky_bass's topic in General Discussion
Well....... it's certainly.......errr...........original. And if it was on display in the Tate Modern, people would be queuing up to say just how very clever it was. -
Blimey - 'tis a small world. I lived just up the road from Halligan Heap Studios (Benwell Road) from around 1975 - 1981. Halligan Heap was a smelly dive as I recall, with appalling (nonexistent) ventilation. Only recall using it a couple of times. There was also another rehearsal/recording studio just the other side of the Tube station run by a guy called Curly Clayton. He appeared to be a bit of a recluse, but I understood he'd been a well known jazz guitarist back in the day. He lived in a tiny windowless room wedged in behind the studio.

I made a triping error once - I tried eating the stuff....... Never again. 😝

Here's Freddie Washington playing 'Forget Me Nots' with Patrice Rushen at some open air event. He was the original bass player on the recording. He doesn't let up his concentration for the entire performance, and his playing is so clipped and precise - absolutely brilliant. Patrice Rushen is no slouch on the keyboard either, as this clip demonstrates later on. And I love how at around 4.30 she gets the audience to clap along ON the beat - I wonder why ? 😏 😄🙄

If you're starting from scratch it may work out way cheaper to buy a standard anti-vandal site cabin, even if you have to have it craned into position (Allow about £1k for this) There are loads of these about.in all sizes. A decent one will be £3k - £5k Check for roof corrosion - that's what kills these. Bottom pic is a cabin being craned into my back garden when we moved into a newly refurbished place about 7 years ago.

Captain Rumble's just collected a set of DR Sunbeams from me, Nice guy, if it wasn't for Covid I'd have invited him in for a cup of tea and a chat !

DR Sunbeams, nickel plated roundcore, 4 string set, 45 - 105, ordered 4 days ago, delivered two days ago from Strings Direct, only used for a few hours. These are great sounding strings but I can tell they're going to be slightly too heavy for me, so I'm going to reorder the same strings but 40 - 100. These haven't been cut to length, they are just as supplied. Save yourself a few quid, these are £22 inc postage. You can pay by Paypal or by BACS prior to sending. Look at my profile on here, I'm a regular contributor to the forum ! 🙂

So true, that's exactly how it is ! A bit like some odd fingerings for certain bass parts - if you think about it too much, it stops happening......
