So, how skint would you be? Bass player infractions
musicbassman replied to oldslapper's topic in General Discussion
I particularly like the perfectly reasonable $25 fine for the DB player who actually plays audibly ! -
Lots of clever here. The intro kids you into thinking it's some standard funk riff in Dm with the C - D bass line. Then, guitar line starts and sounds a bit off, but wait - then chords come in... - and hey, it's in Cm ! π― Great tension and release in the bass line created by use of the supertonic D (2nd) - unusual - resolving to the tonic. And of course, the feel is perfect. There's always something to learn by listening to great simple bass lines π

Not being familiar with this album, apparently by the popular beat combo Metallica, I had a listen, and .............. 1. Maybe this is just a collection of some of those bass playalong tracks where the original bass has been removed ? 2. Did they actually have a bass player in attendance whilst making the album??? 3. If they did, then the poor guy must have realised he was being given a very, very clear message from the rest of the band when it was mixed. π¨

Not sure if I can be bothered to go back to gigging
musicbassman replied to BobVbass's topic in General Discussion
I think you might have the answer there, Bobbi, your public speaking role has replaced your need to 'express yourself' through your playing. Just follow your heart - and maybe you'll look back on your years of gigging as just an interesting previous chapter in your life. Best of luck! -
Can't get enough of this - Sam Wilkes - KNOWER
musicbassman replied to AntLockyer's topic in General Discussion
Yep - there's actually two bass players featured here - Sam Wilkes plays the LA concerts, and a guy called Petter 9000 plays the Amsterdam concert. Petter is obviously a big Wilkes fan, but plays some fairly bonkers bass breaks of his own - try listening to 'Falling in a Cool Way' - and the break at 25.05 for example. π΅ -
When will you start gigging again?
musicbassman replied to julietgreen's topic in General Discussion
I usually just do deps, but everything I had booked in for this year was cancelled. Now I've been offered a dep gig in Surrey for next month π It's a 1950's doowop band. π³ It's playing at a large care home, in the gardens. It's paying peanuts. π¨ Will I take it? Of course I will ! π π Might end up being the only gig I do this year ! -
Oh c'mon, only roadies will share a room with the drummer. And actually, they'd rather sleep in the van.

So, a change of strings - weight and type - can completely change the feel and sound of a bass -we know this. What may not be appreciated is how some strings can be so much louder than others. I've just taken an old set of 45-105 Olympus flats off my PJ as they were getting increasingly 'grabby' I've put on Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky cobalt flats, same weights. Without changing any settings on my headphone amp they're about 20% - 30% quieter than the old Olympus - the greatest volume change I can ever remember experiencing with a change of strings. I won't comment on their sound as all new strings sound wonderful, but the volume thing is a bit weird. There's always something new to learn about strings! But it is an expensive journey. π

I've been driving in my car, it's not quite a Jaguar I bought it in Primrose Hill from a bloke from Brazil It was made in fifty-nine in a factory by the Tyne You'll need more detail than that to complete the change of ownership section on the V5 Vehicle Registration Document, Suggs. And also to advise that the River Tyne does not flow through Oxford. That'll be the upper reaches of the River Thames.

Bass Myths, share ones you've heard
musicbassman replied to shoulderpet's topic in General Discussion
Scene - a band rehearsal back in the day... Guitarist: (stops widdling for a brief moment) "Anyway, a 200watt amp will be twice as loud as a 100 watt amp, won't it." Bass player: "Err, no, I don't think it works like that" Guitarist: "Yeah, of course it will, you thick or summat ?" Bass player: "No, no, it's a logarithmic scale or something" Guitarist: "You bass players are so full of sh*t" (carries on widdling) -
Aw c'mon guys - THIS is the solution!

The Nordy's a clear winner here for me - great woody tone. π To my ears, the other two are no better than the piece of foam.
-
Something a bit different - you're welcome to jam along - I think it could do with a bit of bass. Very creative, anyway π

OK, this is all very well, but what about Nick Campbell knocking this into next week with the Pomplamoose cover ?

Memorable moments in your playing career
musicbassman replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
I've spent most of my bass playing 'career' playing in covers bands of all descriptions. Occasionally, very occasionally, it all comes together. You're in the right band playing the right venue with the right set list - and the whole band and the whole venue is buzzing. It all lifts off onto another level. And, of course, you have the best bass sound ever. And it's only a fleeting moment, and then it's all gone. And then you have to wait three years and a hundred gigs for another of these magical moments to happen again. But it's absolutely worth the wait π -
I usually just do dep gigs and obviously those few I already had in the book were all cancelled. Missing it dreadfully - to me, dep bass gigs are all about fitting in at short notice and creating a great rhythm section with an unknown drummer (or at least trying to !), and relying on your experience and ear - I love it. But right now, unless there's some major change I can't imagine any work appearing until Spring 2021 at the earliest..... π¨

Sorry for completely derailing your thread, Juliet...... π³

Can't remember - maybe John Birch changed the tuners as well - they don't look like the originals, do they ? I realise the picture was taken at Stockton Fiesta, a big cabaret nightclub there at the time. Long gone, I expect.

I very foolishly buggered it up in the early '70's by sending it up to John Birch in Birmingham to have a R... (don't mention that word) pup fitted, to try and beef up the sound. But apart from being a bit louder there was no difference. I didn't understand at the time how important string length was on a bass, so I was really just trying to get the frequencies of a 34" string out of a 30" string. The Danelectro was extremely light and was made of a hardboard face and back with a hollow body. There was no way the poor thing was ever going to produce useful bass frequencies, and really only suited pick playing. So, a stylish and some might say iconic bass ruined through my ignorance. I eventually sold it to a guitarist friend and don't know what happened to it after that. I cannot remember where the R... pup came from, it was one of the early ones with a split magnet shroud. Here I am using the Dan with the pup fitted at some gig around 1973. I changed to a P soon after this.... Yes, and my hair was this long!

In 1968 the band I played 'rhythm guitar' with (using a Watkins Rapier 33) packed up after its first disastrous gig at a local yoof club, and I then decided to change to bass. My first bass I bought was this Danelectro Longhorn, from a local secondhand shop for Β£45. By the way, the white toggle switches were made of wood. I bet the later reissues were plastic.

MODDING MY 89/90 ENCORE P BASS.
musicbassman replied to Col the Plunker's topic in General Discussion
Hi Col, If your bass is still in it's original form and you've had it a long time then maybe it's best to leave it as it is and buy another bass to use alongside this one. One persons 'carefully modded' bass is another persons 'non original' (or 'wrecked') and these can be very difficult to sell on., and you'll also be very unlikely to get back what you've spent. But other opinions are available. Actually, this topic has been covered before: -
Well, here's two memorable guitar solos - completely different. The first is edging towards chaos theory - it's Jon Poole's solo on Cardiacs 'Fiery Gun Hand' Starts at 3.20 The second is Jay Graydons very carefully constructed solo on Manhattan Transfer's 'Twilight Zone' Starts at 2.35 (By the way, Jay Graydon also played the solo on Steely Dan's 'Peg')

Dave Brubeck Quartet 'play' Golden Brown - editing genius!
musicbassman replied to musicbassman's topic in General Discussion
Errr... - I think Golden Brown is in 3/4 ? (with the occasional bar of 4/4 during the main theme) π
