  1. OK, just had a quick listen to this on Youtube - I think you'll need to detune your bass about a quarter of a tone to be in pitch with this whilst you learn it. Then the chords are just D - Em and back to D, and now and then it's D - Em - Bm - Em. I suspect you might have had problems as the bass is so mixed in with the kick - this makes it a bit tricky to discern, and if you add in the quarter tone drop this wouldn't have helped. Hope this helps!
  2. Sorry, but have just watched some of this and I stick with what i said earlier - -he's incredibly talented but the end product sounds completely sanitised and risk free - ready to sell to those nice middle aged and middle class folks in Tunbridge Wells..................
  3. Yes, bonkers talented, but I think he's in great danger of getting sucked into the easy listening "oooh, that sounds a bit like sophisticated jazz" MOR market............ Still, more talent in one fingernail there than ten of me !! - so good luck to him. By the way, there's stuff online of him playing with Rob Mullarkey that's worth checking out.
  4. Well - firstly - watching these two middle aged guys pulling faces is not really great to look at, so maybe best just listened to. So, I tried this, and it did make a bit more sense - a bit. It's just a long and rambling musical journey, and some of the vocalisations are quite impressive. But did I like it? Errr - no. But I'll try anything once, so thanks to OP 👌
  5. Hope your amp was set up correctly. Wouldn't want any clipping...........................
  6. Well, if we're going back a bit, here I am playing with a band called East Side Cruisers at the Greyhound in Fulham Palace Road in1975............. ................. '63 Precision ! Wonder where it is now................
  7. Yep, but I would guess " taking an active part in proceedings" might have been a more accurate description, but obviously only if it's a ladies night. They wouldn't have a band for any other masonic event. I used to do a lot of masonic work - and I'm not even a member of 'the craft'. And it''s not all rolled up trouser legs, you know . See Monkey Steve's comments.
  8. 1980's - 3 piece covers band - keyboards, bass, drums, at a masonic function. Dear lady who was in charge of the function asked if we could "go from table to table, singing and playing" , like Spanish troubadours...........................🙄
  9. This is just the most perfect way to describe the personality traits of some pig headed or ego driven musos - I shall save this description for active duty at some future date, I suspect. Thanks Monkey Steve!
  10. This, absolutely. Drives me crazy.
  11. Well, judging by the musical calibre of the band (dodgy local pub rock band), I would guess it sounded a bit crap when they first rehearsed it, so they decided to 'gee it up a bit' so then it sounded a bit more crap......... At least they were in the same key......... .............. most of the time........... 😏
  12. Poor old Mustang Sally. Wilson Pickett's original was so slow, cool and downright dirty, but this poor old song's been murdered ever since - I honestly think some bands have never even heard the original. I've even heard it played as a shuffle
  13. Well MacDaddy, I stand corrected ! 😏 As far as I can understand after a bit of browsing, it seems: For all classical instruments, legato still has it's traditional meaning - i.e the opposite of staccato playing. For rock guitar (and bass) it has come to have a rather different meaning, referring to hammer ons and pull offs. Always pleased to extend my knowledge. Thanks. 🙂
  14. Are you sure you've understood this correctly - I mean, learning all 11 songs? Maybe you should check that they didn't just want you to pick some from the list. Or, it could be they want you to learn all 11 to see how quickly you can pick up new songs, but only actually try you out on 3 or 4 of their choosing. Mind you, I've done auditions where the band have deliberately not sent me a list beforehand and just thrown stuff at me to see how quickly I can get up to speed.
  15. Sorry to be a pooper, MacDaddy, but I don't think legato means what you think it means. Maybe you mean hammering on? Put simply, legato means playing without gaps between the notes - the opposite of staccato.
  16. This x 100. Well said. It's all about the end result, the finished product.
  17. I changed from guitar to bass not long after I first started playing in the late 60's - because there was always a shortage of bass players and endless numbers of wannabe guitarists (only guitarists got the chicks, allegedly) Then Chris Squire and prog came along and demonstrated that bass could be a key feature in a band's compositions and overall sound - and bass was suddenly cool. Of course, later on with the benefit of maturity I realised that bass had always been cool, but maybe in a way much too subtle to grasp at 17 yrs old.
  18. Nearly caught engaged in NSFW browsing......... .......................browsing for a Nine String Fretless Wal, of course - what were you thinking ?
  19. Yup, schoolboys do most of their thinking below their waists. Or, put another way - eat first, then check ingredients later...................
  20. That looks perfect. I have a JV P with identical finish (I think it's known as tobaccoburst) sporting it's original white scratchplate and I was thinking of treating my self to a decent tortoiseshell, but yours does look the biz. Where did you get the new one from? - looks like a decent 3ply.
  21. Yeah - and just as important as the gospel chops is the advice he gives about breaking down a rehearsal into sub sections - so many people don't do this. Or maybe some bands simply find this impossible - because the guitarist will NOT STOP NOODLING while the rest of the band is trying to check something out !!
  22. Those born in the 40’s - “The best music was in the 1950’s and 60’s” Those born in the 50’s - “The best music was in the 1960’s and 70’s” Those born in the 60’s - “The best music was in the 1970’s and 80’s” Those born in the 70’s - “The best music was in the 1980’s and 90’s” Those born in the 80’s - “The best music was in the 1990’s and 00’s” - Repeat ad lib till fade.................................
  23. I've said this before, but BC is one of the most polite, friendly and supportive forums I've ever come across. Mind you, what would you expect? - we're bass players aren't we ?
