You have to remember that the 1/4" Jack plug was developed from those used in telephone switch boards. In that service they worked at 48V DC at a couple of hundred milliamps. Use in connecting a powerful amplifier to it's speaker cabinet far exceeds the design criteria.

That's their loss I guess!!

Don't you have a Long & McQuade store over there by you?

Then I guess that the amp is in permanent bridge mode to get to the 2KW rating. This being so using standard 1/4" phone jacks for the speaker connections is inadvisable as both conductors will be live with respect to ground. The SpeakOn sockets are all that should be used with a proper SpeakOn to SpeakOn speaker cable.

This amp is supposed to put out 2KW. What is the amp's minimum impedance? Thanks.

We had a ground floor apartment/room. I forget the address it was late Sixties. We bought a house in Caerphilly and a little later moved over here to the Toronto area. It's nice talking to you oo!

Just had to drop in and say hi. I loved my time in Penarth. Just married we moved from Liverpool to Penarth. It really is a nice place to live.

I use a 2x10 cabinet, Acme B2, but I always use a pair stacked on their ends for a vertical 4x10. I find them ideal and stacked thus brings speakers closer to my ears. The dispersion out into the room is better too. In your place I too would get a second identical 1x12 to stack on top of the one you have now.

Well that was a waste of a perfectly good tiP! I guess it must be time for my nap!
-
Your thread title describes me perfectly! LOL

That's not true in my experience. The 12AU7/ECC82 has a smaller amplification factor, µ, and has a greater anode dissipation but cannot draw more power replacing a 12AX7/ECC83.

If you are not using the combo Then the money would serve you better in the bank where it can eventually be put towards something you actually will use.
-
Good luck with that then. I hope your troubles are over.
-
Just for interest if the combo has an Effects Loop try connecting the Send and Return with a signal cable. See if that helps.

The best stand I have discovered for one of my Acme B2 2x10 cabinets is another stacked as a vertical 4x10.

Rectification it should have been! In my tube case I have 6L6B, 6L6WGB, 6L6G, 6L6GT AND 5881 all from earlier versions of the 6L6GC. These would not last long in an amp designed for the GC variant.
-
The outputs are 6L6GC, the letters are important and 12AX7s have nothing whatsoever to do with rectification. Just trying for accuracy.
-
I must admit that I want one of these myself. I'd love to hear how it sounds through a pair of my 4Ω Acme B2 2x10 three way cabinets. That said I can't see myself playing in a bar til two or three AM for little pay. Maybe I'm just getting old! LOL
-
Personally I wouldn't risk it. Damage you can see has no bearing on what is unseen!

On the market you can find small boxes with three or four SpeakOn sockets to allow chaining of your cabinets. For someone who is handy with tools these are easy to make yourself. Make certain sure when you chain speaker cabinets that you ensure that the final impedance of the load thus produced is within the abilities of your amplifier. Edit: Something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/271617232407?epid=2255992147&hash=item3f3da60e17:g:sXQAAOSwT5tWMNK5 One final point is that when and if you build something using SpeaskOns always use the NL4 connectors. These are pretty much the standard on both amplifiers and speaker cabinets.

just for accuracy; the tube is a 6L6GC. If you tried a real 6L6, which is a wartime output tube in a metal envelope, it would melt very quickly. I'm just pointing out that the letters after the type are important.
-
I didn't notice that. lOL

One should be careful to keep heater draw in mind when substituting output tubes. The V4 was designed for 7027A outputs which draw 0.9A at 6.3V each. 6550 and KT88 tubes need 1.6A each. That's a significant difference. Some of the newer output tube pull as much as 2,5A for their heaters. This increase equates to a shorter life span for the power transformer.
