Let me know how you get on with this project as I've been looking at upgrading my Geddy Lee Jazz and EMG are on my list of options. cheers Dave
I had them fitted on my Geddy Lee and the tone was awesome! I can highly recommend them
  2.
That was true for the old version, the only solderless connection was to the pickup. The new system and now the only system that EMG does is completely solderless.
+1 I installed one on my jazz bass a while ago and it's completely solderless, very easy to mount and sounds really well. I highly recommend it.
  3.
Can you set up that gigrig switcher to allow for pedals inside other loops (a fuzz in the loop of a filter, a filter in the loop of a delay, a bunch of pedals in the loops of an LS-2, etc.) to be switched on/off independently too, or does it only really work for linear layouts of pedals?
Sorry about the late reply, it works as said on the quote below.
You can, but ONLY in the order the pedals are connected. You can use channel 10 for example to turn on the miff nd odb by skipping everything else. You can't however go like this.. Pedal 1 to pedal 5 to pedal 3 like you could with a Switchblade but that is ofcourse a much bigger option and costs a hell of a lot more for that feature.. Only very heavy effects users would want that really. The gigrig does also hve 2 outputs btw so you can send em both to dif amps and stack effects nicer
4.
im pretty happy with the effect and pedals i have atm! i have plans to add a few more but i need to get a slightly bigger pedal board. but while im doing the upsizing im thinking of making my life easier at the same time! theres moments in our set where i need no effects and some where i need alsmost all of em! ( ok i dnt need them but its fun! ) and im wandering what you guys who are in the same situation as me do? so you know what i have heres my board. bass--digitech whammy( with my boss tu-3 in the direct out )-- swollen pickle--ls2( used to blend my clean tone with a ehx metal muff)--odb3--bf3-- memory boy-- amp and ontop of this im looking to add a octaver, a wah and as im getting in to synth probs either the boss synth or the ehx but who knows, also i use a few different modes on the whammy and its annoying changing between settings on the fly so any help with that i know its midi but hows that work? thanks andy
This is what you need if you want to stop dancing: http://www.thegigrig.com/acatalog/switching_systems.html Expensive, not so much second hand, but worth every penny...in my opinion. I'v got quite a few pedals in my board and I use a Gigrig 14 Pro, with just one click I can have any pedal combination I want or none at all.

    ODB-3 alternatives
I've been spending some quality time with my ODB-3 starting with the guidance on settings received, and I have to say I'm a much happier camper now having dialed in a considerable chunk of lows and backed off the distortion it now sounds 90% of the way to what I want to sound like so thans very much for your guidance cheddatom
Excellent, see, it was only a matter of playing a bit with the controls, many pros use the ODB-3, there must be something good about them.
  6. I've never had a problem with the neck on mine, I set it up for a low action when I first bought it 3 years ago and I've only had to readjust it once again due to a change on tuning and string gauges, it's now tuned down to C# and it holds it really well. It's been my main bass since then, they are great!

    ODB-3 alternatives
Some people just don't like it, and you may be one of them. All i'm saying is that if you're losing the "punch" of your clean signal, turn up the clean blend, and if you're losing low end, turn up the low EQ. There's so much low end available from this pedal... I use mine just as a boost for low end really, I have other dirt pedals I blend with my ODB-3 (IE parallel not series) for the high end dirt. Having said that, i've found that I can get a nice low gain sound (for me) out of it. If I were to use it on it's own, I guess I would have... low EQ set to 3, high EQ set to 10 or 11, Gain set to 9 or lower, blend set between 10 and 12 - these are hours on the clock face.
+ 1000 Don't know why all the negative comments always about this pedal, I'm adding a second one to my board
  8. I'm using a Gigrig 14 Pro and I highly recommended. Yes, it's expensive if you buy it new, not so much if you go second hand, they tend to go for around the £450 mark, now and they pop up on Ebay or Gumtree. It's still a lot of money, not much if you compare it to some of the boutique pedals, but well worth the money in my opinion. Check post #2690 if you want to see my board here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=289&st=2680
  9. Another smooth transaction with Chris. Always a pleasure mate! Thanks.
  10. Boss GT-10B bought from Chris. Top guy, item as new, exactly as described, excellent communication and GT delivered next day. Guys, don't hesitate and deal with Chris with confidence. Thanks mate!
  11. After having used both, George and Lava, cables I have settled for Lava's as I find them of better quality than George's, smaller plugs and I prefer the way the cable attches to the plugs, I've had problems in the past with George L's but never with Lava's.
  12.
I'd bloody love one but i'd need more like 20 loops than 10
You can always have more than one pedal on a loop.
  13.
As i've said before, if it's good enough for the bassist from Karnivool, it's good enough for anyone. Incidentally I think Karnivool use those gig rig switching systems - very cool and much more tidy than my tap dancing effort.
+1 on the ODB-3. I had always been put off by the negative comments but I went ahead and tried one long, long time ago, is the only pedal that hasn't changed on my board since I bought it! You are right on the Gigrig he uses one: Some info on the Gigrig since some of you have asked my: Th Gigrig is awesome, no more tap dancing The Gigrig I have is the 14Pro. This one has 10 True Bypass effects loops and 14 programmable pre-sets stomps what means that 1 step on any of them you can select over any pedal combination you like, from one on it's own up to ten. The Gigrig is much more than just a switching system, it can also control the channels in your amp if it has more than one, it can also be used as ABY box, if you were running two amps you could send effects only to one amp and clean signal to other, or effects to both, this is not a global setting you can have one setting on each of the 10 presets. It has also tremolos built in, can power some of your pedals, controls reverbs in your amp, allows you to boost/cut volume on each of the presets independently, has a buffer on each preset so you can hit the effects harder or softer... Yes, it's an expensive bit of kit but I see why so many Pro's use it. Second hand you can get them for nearly half the price of a new one, worth every penny in my opinion considering what you get for your money and how much some of the pedals we buy cost.
  14.
awesome board. i've swapped my VT bass for the b3k too. although i am holding onto it as back-up. how come you're keeping the boss od (out of interest) ?
B3K it a great pedal! The ODB-3 is staying as it works really well for me, in fact I've tried many other more expensive ones and I always come back to it, it sounds awesome through my Aguilar and my Bergantino NV610!
Haha I knew someone would mention the ODB-3! I really loved mine for the 4 years I used it live, not one complaint - it does what it does very well, especially in a band situation and there is a horrible prejudice built up around it which I don't think it deserves - generally as a result of people not understanding how to the get the most out of the pedal and hating the fizzy, bee sound which it generates with gain maxed. Sorry I don't mean to rant on or be obnoxious - nice board PauBass!
I know what you mean, I think, and my bandmates too, that the ODB-3 is a great pedal.
  15. Here is mine Still need to sort out a few labels for some sounds though. The VT is quite likely to leave the board and I'm still waiting for a fuzz pedal and possibly a Synth too. The Gigrig is an awesome bit of kit, it makes things so much easier when it comes to combine pedals and switch them on with just one click. GL Custom Case. The whole thing is powered via a Gigrig Generator and then Gigrig distributors. George L and Lava cables for all connections and Pedalboard tape to stick the pedals to the board.
  16.
Yeah, that's what I thought ;-) It wasn't just me then.
Not just you, no. In fact he was awarded not long ago, this year, with the best up and coming Spanish Bass player award. He's also played bass for big and well known Spanish artists.
  17. Lovey bass you are selling, I wish I had the money!
lovely bass.. but that guys playing is awful... self involved flashy nonsence.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHdN_O5k3WM
Are you kidding, right?
  18. I don't know about the cab but I did send a flight cased Ampeg SVT Classic Amp to Belgium with Fedex, booked through Interparcel. It arrived safely and on time.
  19. T, thanks a lot for your advice, I see how the M13 works now, you've been very helpful. You have owned both, the XT Live and the M13. Are the effects on those two units of similar quality? Basically, I'm after something that allows me to save presets of various effects combinations, as mention in one of my previous posts and switch them on with just one click. Are there any other multi effects units worth considering for this purpose?
  20.
In answer to simultaneous switching, you can sort of do it. What you need to do is when you leave that 'scene' have the effects you want active on, then when you switch back to the scene, those pedals will already be running.
A bit confused on how this unit works What do they mean when they say you can use 4 simultaneous effects? I thought you'd be able to switch on any combination of pedals you had saved. I always have compression on together with an effect or a combination of effects. For example: - Comp + Distortion - Comp + Overdrive + Chorus - Octave + Filter - Comp + Octave + Distortion Is it possible to do it with the M13?
  21. OK, now looking at M9/13s too. I have read that on these units you can use 3-4 Effects simultaneously but not sur if you can turn them on at the same time? I mean, can you combine a few effects, save them and then recall them with just one click?
  22.
I picked up one of these around Christmas time and have found it to be incredibly useful. I generally use it in place of an amp - either DI-ing or going through the effects return on amps for monitoring - so have spent a lot of time playing around with the amp modelling functions. These are incredibly extensive and versatile and, with enough time, I'm fairly confident that you can create almost any kind of sound you could want. The addition of the separate, second signal chain (an addition to this model vs its XT predecessor) further increases the range of options. As for using it just for effects, you can turn off any item in the signal chain, so could switch off the amp modelling completely, using just FX. There are possibly some limitations as to how many effects you could apply at once - for example a lot of effects are classified in the same group on the signal chain, meaning you can only apply one of these at once. You have Stompbox, Modulation, Delay and Compressor groups and only one of these each can be applied at once. Distortion pedals are classified under Stompbox, so for example, you wouldn't be able to apply two different distortions on the same signal chain, but you could apply distortion with flanger (Modulation) and delay. I'm probably making things sound overly complicated - really, you just have to spend a bit of time with one and then it all starts to make a lot of sense. I think it can be used fairly simply - like an out of the box mulit-fx, but you only really see it's true benefit if you invest a bit of time in experimenting with different sounds. I personally think the effects do sound great. Possibly not up to individual high-end stompboxes, but definitely more than good enough to my ears. There are a number of options for outputs, in terms of what you're outputting to and the Pod adjusts the signal accordingly. Depending on whether you're DI-ing, going into the front of a combo, power amp etc, there are different settings to account for this and ways of tweaking further. Hopefully that's of some use - please let me know if I can answer any other questions about the Pod.
That was really helpful, cheers.
If you don't need the amp simulation, you may be better off going for one of the M-series (M5, M9, M13) as they are a bit more compact. Supposedly, the effects modelling is better as well, although I've not heard it myself so can't say.
I'm going to look into those units too.
  23.
Front of the amp, just avoid using the amp and cab models. The effects wont sound as good as individual pedals, but the pedal itself is far more versatile.
Thanks for the advice. Is the unit still worth buying even if I'm not going to be using the amp/cab models?
  24. I'm quite tempted to go for a POD X3 Live as a solution for my effects needs but after reading a bit on previous threads I still have some doubts. For those of you that use or have used one, please: My idea is to replace all my pedals with the X3 Live but, how good are the effects? Do they sound like the real thing? Can you get nice overdriven, distorted, fuzzed tones? I'm thinking of running it with my Aguilar DB751, what's the best way of connecting it, front of the amp, effects loop? I don't want to go into the power amp as I really like the sound of my amp. Is it too complicated to use? I mean setting it up to get good tones out of the unit. OK, now looking at M9/13s too. I have read that on these units you can use 3-4 Effects simultaneously but not sur if you can turn them on at the same time? I mean, can you combine a few effects, save them and then recall them with just one click?
  25.
i stopped discussing about that issue with others. It is like discussing about the waves of an ocean with one who likes or (has only seen ! ) the river. Everyone should believe what he wants. I owned several p basses modern to vintage. I now own mostly 60´s and 70`s Fender basses. You can hear the evolution of sound even from pre-cbs to early 70´s and late 70`s. Better or not doesn`t exist. how could left be better than right? They are different and it is up to you, to choose what fits your needs best. For me personally..the best choice and best bass i have ever played in my life ( and i played a lot) is my pre cbs 64 p bass. Lightweight, gorgeous playability, amazing neck and a tone which is heaven for me. There is no modern bass that can compare to this one in my terms of validation.
I couldn't agree with you more.
Do they sound 'woody' because they have a nice, open pore wood finish? Bit like maple fingerboards sounding bright because they are a light colour?
Mate I don't know what it is about the wood and I don't mean I can tell/hear which wood is the bass made of, I think you know where I'm coming from. I can tell you I've played a PJ bass that had the electronics from a Warwick bass and it sounded completly different, didn't have that distinctive sound. I have rosewood and maple boards an no, the colour has nothing to do with brightness on the tone.
