After a few years using an Ampeg SVT Classic amp, I think it's time for a change. As much as I love the tone, moving it around it's a bit of a pain and I fancy something lighter and easy to carry. I'm not really after any of the super small/light amps being made nowadays. I have in mind many different options: Ampeg SVT-4, Genz Benz 750/1200, Mesa, Gallien Krueger... but I'm open to any other suggestions. I assume they all differe a lot from the sound I'm used to so any input from you guys will be highly appreciate it. I have to say I'm not trying to replicate the SVT tone on a smaller amp, for that I can always use a VT bass pedal. Regarding cabs, I'll be keeping and using my Bergantino NV610.

An option would be using a equalizer, set it for your slap tone and kick it in when needed. I use this one and works very well:
My local GeetarGeetar want 1600 clams for one of these so that is an excellent price IMO! I would have it but i would have to wait til the 2 bases I have on commission sale are gone - always wanted a Celinder but Sadowskys are a bit more realistic choice for the money. Oh look I've gone and bumped it...... BB
Yes, they are expensive instruments but worth the money in my opinion, specially if you buy used Bump!
I can indeed... Here is the text of his email... ----- The bass tone I got on Simple Boy was a combination of 2 sounds, and I'm not sure exactly what I did but I'll try remember. I used an Ampeg SVT2 Pro preamp, but through an old SVT2 poweramp (only really because the valves in the the pro were going to sh*t) and then i ran either the ODB-3 or a Tech-21 XXL through it with the gain of the amp up a bit as well. I run the ODB-3 pretty much dry with just a bit of wet so it has clarity. Also, I had a distortion preamp on the DI line that was run through Amplitude 1 (the original one) and that gave it an extra high mid kick. I think there probably would have been a bit of clean DI in there as well. Also the EBS that was on stage (SHEP- when I saw them last in the UK) was Marcus' from Dead By April, I usually use an Ashdown live or Ampeg. ----- Now you may find all of the above a little complex. I ran it by Max @ [sfx] labs not long back and he offered the following 'slightly' easier explanation (hope you don't mind Max)... ----- Jon's signal path sounds pretty complex but if I understand correctly the sounds comes from: bass->valve preamp->XXL/ODB3->EQ (mid boost) in parallel with some other "distortion preamp" + some clean in parallel. ----- Hopefully that helps Shep
Thanks Shep! Yeah, it sounds pretty complex to me I assume that's how he got the sound on the recording but how does he do it live?

Awesome band! I haven't stopped listening to their latest album since I bought it I think the basslines are great, they fit the music really well and his tone is outstanding.
...Jon is a great player, uses a Warwick Thumb 6. I spent a bit of time discussing his dirty sound via email with him as I was very fond of his overdriven tone on a few tracks....
The overdrive tone of this guy is the best I've heard, for that music. I love it and I'm after a dirty tone like that...Could you, please, elaborate a bit more and reveal more details on how he achieves it? I'd really appreciate it.
I think we all agree it's a great bass, just a bad time to find that kind of money or I'd be in the queue. Oh look, I've gone and bumped it
Thanks for the Bump! Yeah, I think you re right, it's probably the wrong time to sell it. Still available.
So Basschatters, who out there got it??
Ummm...That would be me....Yes, it's me...It's mine now!!!
I'm sure he*'ll let everyone know once he's finished his journey south**
Hey Rich, thank you very much. Thanks for your hospitality, your time and all your advice, help and your patience, that thinking about the amount of Pms I sent you asking for more info about the bass, was a lot. It was such a pleasant transaction from the first PM to the bass collection. All the details, info provided regarding the bass was 1000% accurate if not more. It was a long journey, a long day on the road travelling up to Sheffield but it was completely worth it. Guys, all I can say is...Wow! This bass is awesome!!! It looks great and sounds even better, so easy and comfortable to play. It's in mint condition, it's been very well looked after and you wouldn't tell it's been around those many years. Wal to my eyes, quality everywhere, from the woods to the electronics, attention to detail it's unbelivable. Yesterday as soon as I got back home I headed for band rehearsal and, although I haven't played a five strings bass for quite a while I felt at home, the neck is so comfortable, it balances perfectly for my taste and the sound...oh, my god... what a sound! It packs lots of punch but the versatility of the controls is great and you can dial in some more smooth tones...It sounded huge through my rig, Ampg SVT Classic + Bergantino NV610, I nearly sh*t in my pants
I would be so interested in this normally and you are just down the road from me.... But I have a UV70 5 string on order - would be very interested in your opinion on your UV70 if you want to PM me. Sorry to hijack the thread a little but have a bump on me :0)
PM Sent.
I fold the leather ends over so the straplocks go through the 'longer' and 'shorter' holes...
That's exactly how you are supposed to do it...I've been using mine, with straplocks too, for nearly 4 years and never had a problem.
A few people have asked for shots up/down the neck, and obliging soul that I am... The neck profile is more V-shaped than I remember! Hey, I just played it, I didn't 3D model it Oh, and in case it isn't clear, those dark shapes on the left of the back shot are reflections from my shelves. Thick lustrous lacquer, huh?
Silly question, what's a V shaped neck like? I've never played a bass like that before.

Up for sale is my Sadowsky Metro Vintage 4 string. A great instrument, very comfortable and easy to get on with, plays great and sounds even better but my UV70 it's getting all my playing time and this one is not being used.... Now the pics: A few small dings on the back of the body, very small and not very noticeable. I've tried and show them on the pic, look at the black circles: Wear on the back of the neck, not noticeable at all when playing, not even sure it's wear or if it's just discolouration of the wood, I can't really tell because you can't appreciate it at all. See pic: Yours for SOLD
