  1. Funny you mentioned scorched I was thinking of going down that method but decided to stain it black and knock it back to give a kinda weathered look instead!?! It’s a good way to relieve stress as well when you start belting ten bells of poop out of it with chains and bolts then go at with a utility knife!! it’s probably going to be a bit marmite but I don’t really like the road worn look yet I like the knackered weathered timber look but we’ll have to wait and see how it turns out.........🤞
  2. Here’s the start of my Les Paul/Tele hybrid Barncaster type thing!!!! Its going to have a Maple/Maple neck not sure if I’m going to do a Tele style or a Les Paul style neck with relict Chrome hardware, Single coil pickup at the bridge and Humbucker at the neck I've been experimenting with ways to relic the Chrome and I've found that brick cleaner with a lump of wire wool in it gives me the finish I was looking for............😀
  3. Here’s a barncaster........just imagine a Tele made out of knackered timber and relict hardware Or a Les Paul Tele hybrid Barncaster Typically they are made from reclaimed timber off barns hence the name..........👍
  4. Yep it’s another guitar it’s either gonna be a les Paul tele hybrid or a barncaster haven’t decided yet.............🤔
  5. Well “The Skipper” is now finished and being delivered tomorrow In true Jimothey style I decided to do a last minute change and have two humbuckers instead of a single coil at the neck 👍
  6. I’ve ended up buying new pickups as there’s no output from the humbucker and the single coil the wires were just stuck with tape to the coil so I didn’t have anywhere to solder new wires to!!............🙄
  7. Oh and I forgot how do you tell which is the north/south as they both have slugs and generally which way round do they put the + and -??
  8. I’m trying to finish my skip find guitar build and the wiring is being a bit of a PITA the neck pickup has only 1 wire coming off it and it’s too sort to put the bare wire to ground on the pot and the hot to the switch, so I’m thinking of unsoldering the original wire and put 2 separate wires on instead which should be fine and easy enough to do The main problem is the humbucker the wire is a 4 core wired in parallel and that wire is a bit too short to split them so I’m thinking of changing the wiring to series instead so if I understand how it works then this is how I’m going to do it solder a new wire to the north + to use as the hot and then solder a new wire to the south - for the ground, then solder a wire between the north - and the south+ then just wire it up to the switch and ground as normal Is that the correct way to do it??.........🤞
  9. I don’t use any clear coat that finish is about 4 coats of satin black which seems to be a very durable finish....,.....😀
  10. I’m 40 and just got back into playing the bass I appreciate others opinions that what’s the point of playing if your not in a band but you can have just as fun at home playing with yourself (oooh errrr missus!!) my aim is to play in a band but I need to build up my confidence on my playing ability first before that happens but like everyone else has said you are never too old go for it I say!! On a side note I’ve got a couple of grade books that I was going to start working through how useful do people find them in making you a better bass player?.........😀
  11. The skip find build (which I’ve dubbed “The Skipper”) is almost done now I’ve cut a new pickguard today as I wasn’t happy with the one in the photo but I think it’s looking good.........😀
  12. It’s a Washburn XB600 (the one I did the build thread about) my plan is just to replace the existing electrics with 2V and 2T pots instead I’ll just give it a go and see what happens........👍
  13. Sorry for a bit of a hijack but @Andyjr1515 I’m looking to do this to my 6 string bass the pickups outputs are around 12k each so do you think I could just scrap the preamp and convert to passive without any problems??........😀
  14. I started making the cab today as I got given a 12” speaker that was out of an 4x12 cab (the other three had been wrecked) so I’m just doing a 1 x 12 cab instead just to see how it sounds with the head As its just an experiment I just looked online for bass cab plans and settled on this one as I had some spare ply that’s big enough to cut it out of and I didn’t have to spend out getting ports etc I’ve made most of it now just the back to cut I’ll post pics when I get back to work tomorrow.............😀
  15. Looking lovely mate! IMHO you’ve made the right choice (except for the tort pickguard!🤮) Are you going to do the pin stripping as well?...........😀
  16. Well the yellow strat has been finished and has been delivered and the fella is really happy with in fact he paid me more than the agreed price so that’s s bonus!! The skip find is almost ready for spraying, and on a side note I’ve just started making a Les Paul/Tele hybrid (which is for me) it’s going to be orange and it will have a Maple tele style neck and black hardware............. 😀
  17. Yeah me to I prefer Maple generally but the Rosewood does look better.........😀
  18. Another couple of precision bitsa’s That I’ve almost finished just electrics to do..........😀
  19. @KiOgon I’ve wired it up like that and no sound came out apart from humming, and the same thing that happened with my P the hum got louder when I touched the strings so I’ll have a look at the bridge ground to check that but as part of the course I checked the pickups and they hadn’t gone open the neck is 12k and the bridge is 15k which seemed a bit high to me as aren’t active pickups supposed to have a lower output than passive? I did think that if it’s a problem with the preamp and not the wiring could I rip out the preamp and just put 2v 2t passive wiring in or wouldn’t that work?? But I need to try and investigate a bit more on what the problem is, if you’ve got any advice at where to start I’d gladly accept any ideas............😀
  20. I’m trying to wire up my Washburn XB-600 6 string and I’ve connected up the battery and the jack but I can’t find a wiring diagram for the pickup wiring Sorry about the bad drawing but I hope you get the idea Does 1 go to 1 and 2 go to 2 if so where does the grounds go? do they go on the side of the pot where I’ve written ground???
  21. I sorted out the problem with the loud hum when you touched the strings by putting some Alu foil underneath the ground wire that went to the bridge but now my volume and tone pots make a really loud hissing/humming sound apart from if they are on full or fully off!?! I think I need to completely overhaul the electrics!!
  22. At first I thought you were taking the gear porn title a bit too literally............😜
