I really need some advise please!! I've just changed the strings on my P bass from flats back to rounds and now I've noticed that I now get fret buzz on the 3rd fret if the D string but nowhere else I've checked for high/low frets with my rocker and they are fine no rocking at all, Could it be a difference in tension that has caused the neck to convex a tad??............ π

Here's my recently refinished P!, It was only a cheap bitsa copy but it plays lovely!! π

I hoped that I could push this build on a bit but the truss rod I bought was faulty and the wrong fret wire was sent they sent brass instead of nickel so they both went back and I got a refund so I need to order them again from a different supplier I've been reading about flat fretboards I'm tempted to do that on this build I did read a thread on here from about 8 years ago on here and it had a mixture of pros and cons and I'm wondering if anybody has a new perspective on the subject?? If I remember correctly I think @eude was a flat fretboard convert............. π

@eude I don't normally like headless but this one (well they are all great but) is especially great !! What is the top wood on it??........... π
-
This build has stalled a bit due to a stupidly heavy workload at the mo but hopefully I'll be able to push it on a bit next week?? I still can't decide whether to do this as a 4 or a 5 string tho??........... π€

Oooohh errrr missus!! π

My vote would go for Honey if you wanted to have the back lighter than the top or a nice Meduim cherry........... π
-
Here's the wood for the body and top cap it's nothing special but I think once I've contrast grain filled the oak it will look nice......... π I think I'll have to rout a cavity in the Sapele before I glue the cap on it as its a tad on the heavy side.............

That Rosewood looks great!! Are you leaving it natural or are you going to stain it?......... π
-
No worries mate I thought I'd ask, thanks anyway...... π

In my head I know what I'm going to do and I think it will work I will probably have to cut an extra wedge piece off my test neck so I won't have to flip over the headstock?!? but when I use my test neck hopefully it should throw up any pitfalls or unexpected problems?? If @Andyjr1515 or anyone else any advice please feel free to comment!....... π

See I told you its easier than you think! Hopefully when I do mine it comes off as easily??....... π

I've been visiting family back down in Colchester this week and staying at my parents so I thought I'd take advantage of my old table saw and thicknesser so I started a project that I've been thinking about for a while I'm doing it Sapele backed and 6mm Oak top cap with a matching Oak headstock cap (I'll probably do a ebony-esque demarcation line) which has all been thicknessed now ready to glue up when I get back to work next week I'm going to try and do something a bit out of the ordinary and convert a flat headstocked neck into an angled headstock this is the neck I'm going to use I've got a old guitar neck that I'm going to try it out on first I think it will involve de-gluing the fretboard removing the truss rod cutting and scarf jointing the headstock back on to the neck?? Sounds simple when I say it like that!! π³ I'm going to use a Warwick 2 piece bridge and tuners and a pair of big pole MM style pickups

Just a quick pic with the temporary pickguard......... π

@SpondonBassed Almost right! I tried finding a song video called 'Draw it on with a sharpie!!' to reply with but bizarrely I couldn't find anything.......... π

That's a really good point if you want to do it as a business then till your an established builder with good brand exposure you probably won't make a lot of money, but if your doing it just for the love of building and aren't really bothered in how much profit you make then your laughing really anything you get above cost price is a bonus As a side business from my bespoke furniture business I started doing French Polishing and got a few jobs but working out how much to charge was a complete nightmare as most of the people wouldn't pay the exuberant price I needed to charge to make any kind of a reasonable profit! On one job it worked out I earned less than 50p and hour because of the time it takes to do it properly so needless to say because it was a business I knocked it on the head........ π

I had the same problem when I was selling handmade furniture pricing is a minefield price it too low and some people will think its of an inferior quality, price it too high and some people will think its over priced, In my opinion the price is very subjective so you need to price it to what you think is a fair and reasonable price for the materials and your workmanship The only problem I think you might encounter is that the price you have indicated you would sell it for is in the premium bass price bracket and there are so many brand snobs out there that because you aren't a brand they have any experience or knowledge about they might not even bother looking at your product irrelevant of the fact your workmanship is of a amazing quality but saying that someone might look at it and think that's cheap I'd have paid 2000β¬ for it??............. π

I'm thinking of making this a 4 string instead of a 5er as I've been given a neck (which is in quite good nick it needs refinishing as it's been painted black badly!!) and some soapbar pups!! I'll probably reshape the headstock to proper tele style but the fella who gave me the parts said the headstock has been filled lots so I might make a black capping for it (matt finish to match the pickguard) because the pickguard is matt I'm rethinking the faux binding as that's gloss so I might try and paint it instead?? If I remember correctly @SpondonBassed have you strung a bass with rotosound 88's if so what do you think of the them?............ π
-
Thats why my neck thru build has been going on for a long time because I want to be completely sure what I want to do on it so I don't change my mind and so I can save up some money so I can do it properly and not on the cheap like most of my other builds........... π

I never take photos too close up anyway you might notice some inconsistencies or things that aren't quite right!! my basses are like water colour paintings they look better from a distance!! π Also if I decide I don't like the look of the bindings I can easily change it.......
